    Is there a musical note for the "perfect" tightness of the bandsaw blade? I have an app on my phone to tune my guitar. Would that work on the bandsaw if I "pluck" the blade"?

    • @AndrewKleinWW
      @AndrewKleinWW  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      No, the perfect notes changes based on a bunch of specifics for your saw and blade, that’s why so made the app.

      If you always have the same bandsaw and the same blade, you should probably always expect the same note when it"s tuned correctly. It won't work anymore if anything is changed. And this specific app probably won't get rid of the harmonics the same way as your tuner, because the purpose is not the same. So a guitar tuner may work in some specific cases, but won't cover all needs, far from it. (from what I understand of it at least)

    The shopping vac can give you adequate vacuum for template routing you can also use an old refrigerator compressor

    Thank you for sticking with the app, I've had some minor issues but will update it now. I'm behind you and will stick with you, I respect you courage putting yourself out there like this. The market is an unforgiving place. 😉

    I haven't had a chance to use my bandsaw tuning app yet because my bandsaw is still in shrink-wrap after moving, but I'll be pretty patient with it when I try it. I use specialized equipment for this for tensioning belts at work that operate on the same principle and the unit we use is $600 and they don't work very well most of the time. They're very sensitive to background noise, if you hit anything else while strumming the belt it won't work, the vibrating belt can't hit anything . The fact that you made an app that can do the same thing for a few dollars is impressive. I'm excited to try it out and I'd be happy to give you any useful feedback I can come up with to help.

    Would lining a template with your cork rubber product be enough to hold a workpiece while template routing? I imagine that the downward force of push blocks would help it stay. But then again it might shift when repositioning.

    • @AndrewKleinWW
      @AndrewKleinWW  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never tried it but I don’t think it’s enough, it would probably be fine when cutting, but as you reposition it I think it would be hard to keep the workpiece and template together.

    In my experience, the bandsaw tensioning app works nicely. I prefer it to all of the other methods that I have seen and tried. And Andy's support of this product is peerless. Okay, there has been an initial glitch and that is frustrating for some users. But he's on it. He has been clear all along about development. Personally, I really enjoy being included in the process. I recommend participating in this one.

    I normally drill a couple of slots in a base plate for any router templates, enough to fit the festool mft style clamps. Put the new piece and template on top of the base and clamp the three together. The base can either be sacrificial (first time), or just offset/thinner than the template to avoid cutting it. Obviously, this method sometimes requires a large bit. I'm sure a metal alternative could be a lot thinner and allow for built in clamps.

    Glad to hear your working on app. Sorry it’s taking some of your energy to chase this thing. I am a “too tight” until the blade is way loose experience. I just didn’t want to give a complaint in the comments. I was hoping it was just my setup messing with the results. 14” jet with Timberwolf blades and IPhone X.

    How do I get the updated version of the bandsaw app? The iOS App Store has v1.01 but doesn't provide way to download it. Also, shouldn't a repaired version just show up in app upgrades on the App Store App?

    How does the bandsaw app get around the fact that linear mass density can be wildly different between different blades in a relative sense (even 10% is significant), thus highly affecting the end measurement? Regarding the issue of picking up harmonics, is the graph you showed us of the FFT a representative sample? If so, that's unbelievably noisy. The acoustic tension gauges I've worked with in the past have used active noise cancelling to isolate the sound from the belt, and even then they weren't super reliable.

    • @AndrewKleinWW
      @AndrewKleinWW  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The furnace was running in the background so I think (or hope) that this is a worst case, and I am still about to get a decent reading. How are you defining "linear mass density"? Do you mean that the blade width and thickness vary with blade size and therefore mass/inch varies? Or that the actual mass/volume density of different metals vary? different answer for each.

    • @peterxyu
      @peterxyu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndrewKleinWW I meant that if someone is using a blade that's not one of the pretested options, small variations in thickness, density, or even tooth geometry directly impact the mass per unit length of the blade, and thus what the ideal frequency is from the standing waves formula. Because the app is trying to set a precise tension not just relatively but in an absolute sense, it's pretty sensitive to the input parameters (mainly span and linear mass density).

    Hi Andy. I was one of the ones who had issues with the "too tight" problem. I bought the app probably the first day it was available. After watching this video, I checked my version in the 'about' page of the app. It said ver 1.0 and the IOS store lists the app at 1.01 so I deleted it and downloaded again. "about' in the app on my iphone still says ver 1.0. Is that just that you hadn't changed the notes on the about page or am I somehow not getting the revised version? I didn't see any other way to update it.
