Haha again I come across your videos. Looking for a chest rig but molle based to attach my own needs. TAPS system is probably what I’m going to end up with.
Awesome video, looking at getting a budget chest rig and had been considering picking up a surplus TAPs system. Sure looks a hell of a lot more comfortable and practical than the IBA we had when I was in.
I love the concept of the TAPS and rock it on my kit now. Though I do see a few issues with it. Have you, by chance, seen or heard of anyone talking about the Tracer Tatical Stout Scout Rig? It looks to be a more modernized version of the TAPS, but I can't find many reviews by end users. I revisist these issued gear videos way too often, lol.
I have not but i am in contact with him ill see if I can get one to work with. I really like what tracer is brining to the industry and their company is one of many that I really want to work with in the future.
The one thing I wish was different on this thing would be putting a radio closer to your body (I.e. in one of the cells closest to your body) but also more close to either of the two buckles. A radio in the intended radio pouch doesn’t really work under someone’s arm. And I def prefer a radio to be immediately on the body as opposed to how you have it just due to the weight of it. Looks like you’ve found the best way to get it done with the restrictions of the system though
@@LegionPreparedness yeah I mention that in my comment, those pockets fit a 152 but also put the antenna straight into the armpits of anyone I know, or require tilting the whole TAP to orient the radio in the right direction. I just mean I wish I could put a 152 in either cell where you have your farthest left of right mag.
@@willthrill94 you could use an antenna relocation cable. You’ll just have to play around with some attachment methods but I think it is a feasible course of action
Hey man, I was just thinking about upgrading TAPS! I stumbled onto a video Spiritus System released on their take on the TAPS setup a few days ago and would love to hear your thoughts on it.
I think what they are doing is awesome! I just learned some history on all of this actual. So supposedly a couple years back S.O. Tech tried doing the same thing but it fell through, I didn't even know that they tried to do what I spoke about in my redefining issued equipment series and modding the pouches. About a year later now Spiritus is making an official product, and I'm greatful that they are doing this because its helping soldiers across all of the branches, and that modification isn't exclusive to the TAPS you can run it on the triple mag panels. So, I think its awesome and looks really good! Props to them for getting on it and making it a profitable product! I'll be buying it and adding it to the redefining issued equipment series
So I throw all the medical contents in a food saver bag and vacuum seal it to keep it in as small of a package as possible, and because I pull some of the contents out of their original packaging to build it it helps protect those items from water, dirt, debris, and then ontop of that when you seal the bag you can put pull tabs or a tear away tab on it so it can be rapidly opened and also act as a tray to work from.
+Legion Preparedness What is the make and model/name of that gray, 5x5 MOLLE pouch on the right side ( camera's right, wearer's left ) of the chest rig, who sells them, and about how much are they? It looks to be about perfect for an application where I need a good size and capacity ( without being too" clunky" up high on my chest ) pouch to mount on the bib of my RACK vest. I wanted to get one of those MOLLE Corpsman's/Medic's pouches, the kind that have the Velcro and zippers ( 6 and 1/2 x 6 I think ), but Venture Surplus is sold out at the moment and when I can find them most vendors want like 15-20 for them used. That gray, 5x5 pouch looks to be about the next best thing as far as being the right size and type of construction for what I have in mind for it, and still looks like it will fit nicely on the bib of a RACK vest. Thanks ;)
What did you do with the magazine retention on the taps system? I seen you use bungee cords but I know the standard issue taps uses velcro flaps for mag retention.
I've been out for a long time. I ran an lbe, but i have always wondered about modern hydration with all this new kit that's out. I can't help but think that the only thing you run with is a camel back. I had a 5qt bladder and a 2qt canteen in my ruck and 2 1qt canteens on my lbe
I’m one of the few in my formation that still runs a canteen on my kit. I’m keenly aware of the fact that CamelBaks are not CBRN resistant, have no pro-mask adapters anyway, and I’d never hear the end of it from my 74-Series wife if I let myself get gassed because I only ran a hydration bladder.
I recently got one of these to attempt and build out a light RRV. Do you happen to know of any hydration carriers that will snap in without heavy modification?
I think a little modification is necessary. even if its adding molle or a sewn in d ring in the shoulder straps so that you can easily turn it into a full front and back harness system. The investment in a slight mod will be worth it in the end cause youll have a more functional system at the end of the day.
Do you run any water container on your kit? Probably camelbak is the case - if so, are you bringing it in its own carrier or inside some pack? Awesome video anyways.
I typically run disposable water bottles right now and I’ll usually carry them in my dump pouch however I have a array of pouches and kit to run Nalgene bottles canteens and camel packs. Just depends on the mission and what things look like on the ground
I think I have ironed out the kinks on my TAPs set up personally. On mine I have deleted the original harness, and used 4 female split ring clips on the taps itself to tie into spiritus (clones) harnesses. The Taps doesnt shift or wiggle when your active with a proper H harness. However the clips negate the last row of webbing on each side. A second Taps build will be using Steel split rings I think that would still allow the use of that last row of molle. I also have HSP style mag inserts so no bunji's needed. I am trying to source a similar GP pouch as your using here. Im trying to keep everything UCP camo ( I dye mine) Is that GP pouch the same as the issue "medical pocket" ? Your video inspired me to really dig into these and find how incredibly useful they can be. Everything from Micro and concealable under loose clothing, to macro long range set ups can be easily achieved with the TAPs.
That's actually pretty legit. I'm going to have to look into that after I get equipment reissued. That has actually been the primary reason that I refuse to use the TAPS for years now, and I spent the money to buy an IOTV to use. If I can snug the TAPS up so it doesn't move around as much I would definitely be more open to using it more often
Great video! Just one question; I know this is setup for a plate carrier but as a standalone chest rig, do you (or anyone for that matter) know what I can replace the standard Y harness with?
I have this setup to run with any body armor system. Some mods might need to happen but it should clip in or go over reall anything and I would look at tac tailor they have a lot of stuff or will custom make something for you
Think I can help with this issue you can buy any harness ie;( haley, spiritus or any other) and switch out the side buckles or the female split buckles it run much higher this way because the belly strap is not in use works well with the haley h harness but my body type is small/ medium so sit just in the right area and no flop when the buckles are flipped
Might be a little late but with the army issued camelback you can add the female buckles to the rows of PALS on the back to connect the male buckles on the sides and use the camelback’s female buckles to connect to the male buckles on top of the TAPS
Somewhat, I just tried to make the med kit as small and streamlined as possible for the video. However, the med kit is configured in a way that when employed it opens up like a book and gives the user the ability to work with it like a tray.
@@LegionPreparedness I was a little concerned about it not being able to be rapidly deployed; think bloody, slippery, fingers. Med kits should be as gross motor as possible.
@@myerextra yes, however you can punch a small hole through the bottom of the mag pocket and tie the knife down from the bottom. I would recommend adding a little rivet at the bottom if want to buy a little hand riveter
If I showed my deployment kit set up, you would either vomit or think that I am a Brit with US equipment and a uniform. PS my set up was decent for the purpose but wish I could do something like this.
This is pretty much a solid set up for your kit. But highly disagree with how you carry your IFAK! Your buddies are going to want to use your IFAK on you not theirs. It needs to be on the outside where they can find it not having to guess and dig for it!
It’s just one way of doing it. I run my Med kit Velcro’d to my belt that I can access from either hand or one of the other guys can access. The problem with that setup is that the IBA, IOTV, and newer body army systems the military issues are so big and bulky that they typically prevent the use of a gun belt. In addition to that most of the conventional guys I’ve worked with from multiple units have their ifak on their back or side and it’s not even accessible to the provide self aid. That’s why I put the Med kit in the internal pocket, and you can add a red pull tab to make it easy to find. With that setup the individual, buddy, or medic can provide self aid, buddy aid, or what ever Immediate care under fire is needed. In addition to that the Med kit is going to be protected, and with the design of the TAPS you are either just pulling the Medkit straight out of the pocket or your unbuckling the chest clip and then pulling the med kit out. That way you free up space and keep things streamlined to more effectively shoot move and communicate. But like I said above this is just one way of setting up your kit and how I recommend it. There’s a lot of guys and gals that have told me their unit has adopted this setup and it’s made a substantial difference in their morale, performance, and training. So take their word for it they are the end users. I just took what I’ve learned in SOF and applied it to this kit to provide kit solutions to the problems service members were having with it.
If the is an SOP it should only state minimum criteria. For example, each SM will have 5 - 7 mags, a med kit, water, admin data for the mission, frags, flash bangs, smoke and any other mission specific equipment. From there the it is up to the individual to set up their kit in a manner that will best support their role within the element.. Now there are some thing that can be added to the SOP like You mags need to be centered on the chest plate, and you med kit and tourniquet should be placed _________________. However, Placement is not immaterial. Placement is a critical factor. Your not going to put your mags in a position where you can't effectively get your gun back into the fight when reloading, and your not going to put your medkit and tourniquets in a position where you can't rapidly access and employ them from either side.
This is super useful for the average person that buys surplus to see a good quality budget setup for a SHTF kit.
