Nishida actually has a youtube channel of his own and he did talk about this service run on his channel. He mentioned that when he serves, he usually aims for a specific player instead of a seam, mainly to get that player out of system, which was quite apparent here. He also mentioned that he was particularly motivated by Shimizu throughout the match when he was on the bench and wasn't aiming for aces with his serves, but rather to put his team in a good mood (something along those lines if I remember correctly). He was particularly fired up after seeing the block from Yamauchi as well. The whole video was pretty interesting and worth the time to check out.
I just wanted to point how awesome of a guy Erik is. Dude is easily one of the best liberos in the world, but he is always so humble, giving credit where credit is due and never dissing or talking down others when they make mistakes. I love how he only has positive things to say about every play. Keep up the good content!
why are volleyball players so nice like it’s so nice to see people bringing up other instead of saying wow they sync because they couldn’t receive one of the best serves
“Ends the world cup on an ace” 😭 that was one of my favourite videos of nishida! I’m glad to see it from another angle. I also appreciate that you took time to explain the serves. I didnt know a lefty serve would have a different result! 😳 But honestly, I’d be scared to receive Nishida’s serves. Too powerful!
2:39 This reminds me that Haku Lee is a shorter middle blocker at 193 cm but the guys so good at blocking and attacking that makes up for his lack of height.
That serving run...absolutely 🔥🔥🔥 I always enjoy watching Japan play at home with that crowd! Looking forward to some behind the scenes with Team USA! 😁
This video pains me because I LOVE the Japanese team and have so many inspirations from their players but I’m from Canada. Nishida delivering those aces is bitter sweet
Enjoyed watching this with you as I appreciate the insight from someone who has had direct experience. I'm a big Canadian volleyball fan but also love both Nishida and Ishikawa as both are giant talents. I hope to be in the crowd the next time the teams meet in Toronto. Please make it soon!!

My country (ireland) is still in lockdown so I think it would be a great idea if you could do some at home training videos with and without a ball. Obviously if your too busy preparing for the national team just thought it would be cool to see 😁
It took you so long to do this one 😁 this is so famous I've seen the match back when I wasn't even into volleyball (so cool with ace serves to wrap it up)
Hey Erik! Love watching your videos and all your plays for Team USA. I was wondering if you have any tips on how to become a better libero. Currently playing as a libero for my high school and I do plan to play for college. Thanks Erik! Can't wait to see you back in action! -Trung

8:09 if im going to be honest the best choice for canada was there opposite the japanese blocker yamauchi shifted to the left a little which made blocking hough easier. I know that the setter for canada use hand single to tell their spikers who they are setting first. But if i were the setter i would be risky and went for the opposite hitter sharone even if he wasnt expecting it . Dont get me wrong ishikawa is a good blocker but a dink form sharone would be better than a shutdown block ishikawa is a good. Im not sure if this is a good substitution or not but i would also use the double substition to make the opposite hitter in the front row and setter in the back row so the opposite can drop back. Correct me if im wrong though i dont really know canadas team well. Yes i do realize the setter dont expect their spikers to be blocked hard
Can't believe that I'm one year older than Nishida 😭 I'm not really a good receiver but do you mean to adjust the left shoulder a bit higher when you said "you have to block that ball"?
Great to see you in the olympics! Good game against my home Germany, hope Grozer didn't hurt your arms too much haha Good luck against Japan tomorrow, we'll be watching!
Do you watch women's volleyball bc the Texas vs Kentucky game was awesome. My coach and the other girls in the club bet suicides on who was going to win. I think I will be running tmr.
...Wow...5 aces...that's serving right there. I don't know what it feels like to receive from a left handed player or any handed player for that matter but how low these serves go are nasty.
New to volleyball, just started watching for fun. Why did the libero for Canada not position near the center or the left to receive Nishida's serves? It seems like Nishida's serves were very effect but had a similar trajectory each time.
In volleyball you are kind of restricted where you position on the court in relation to some of your teammates at the beginning of each point. If you want a deeper explanation of those restrictions I suggest you google the term "volleyball zones", because for someone who just started it might seem a bit complicated to understand from a simple comment here. Bottom line is the more to the left the libero moves the more the other players have to move as well. That would leave a big gap on the right side of the field which Nishida would take advantage of. Side note: At this level good servers can aim their serves wherever they want to. It's not like Nishida used his "strongest" serve, the tactical decision was probably to aim for that specific player.
It’s been a while since national teams played. I hope Marr and Vernon-Evans show us how they improved! After the season he had I am sure will see Loeppky on court. Also I can’t wait to see Vigrass reminding us why he is one of the best middles in the world! Unfortunately, we don’t have a roster that will lead to a medal but I am confident we can beat Japan, Argentina, Iran, and Tunisia but will still be cheering my heart out at every match they play 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Hey Erik, not sure if you’ve been watching the Women’s NCAA tournament this year. I’ve noticed 99.9% of the serves are jump floats and I’m curious as to why they don’t hand pass the serves more often. If you have any insight thanks!
Jump floats are used by professional women athletes as well. The reason is because the shorter net women use allows for a steeper trajectory for a float serve. This is why a lot of the best float servers in men’s volleyball are tall middles because they have a high contact point. The advantage of a spin serve is that the ball’s trajectory curves down a lot more meaning a ball can be hit harder/faster and not be out of bounds. So at a for women the added chance of error and the easier to predict path of the spin serve means that most female players will hit a float serve
@@ErikShojivolleyball towards the end of the last set of the national championship tonight, a Texas player tried to hand pass the float serve and shanked it. I don’t think I’d seen a hand pass all night until then. Idk if they aren’t great at hand passing because they don’t practice, or if they don’t practice because they aren’t great at it. Kinda a chicken or the egg scenario lol.

Always in love with gorgeous serve even if broke my team
Same from me in Germany.
The way he did a sigh when Nishida served meant that every team winces a little when he serves lol
I’m so excited that you’re going to play in the Olympics again because now I will know who you are when Canada plays against you!!

When things are pointed out angle by angle. 🔥 and his compliments. 😊
Nishida is basically ushijima in the flesh.
Haha forrreall
Left handed, strong, has a killer serve, and has great jumping technique. Now that I think about it, he is similar to ushijima.
