@ Never read the book but the movie was spectacular. Very well done very believable movie and it was Robert Blakes greatest role. The scene where he sees his executioner turn into a memory of his abusive father is riveting.
Quaid and Blake are Perfect as Lenny and George. Their physicality and speech is great. Lew Ayres is brilliant in this. Can make you cry at the drop of a hat. Those sad eyes.
Blake made some great TV movies like this one. He also made the one about they guy who killed his family and disappeared for decades. and He played Jimmy Hoffa and was brilliant! All need DVD release.
This is my favorite of the three film versions because I think that Randy Quaid edges out Lon Chaney Jr in the role of Lenny. Thank you for posting this.
Have you seen John Malkovich/ Gary Sinese version? Malkovich's portrayal of Lennie is magnificent. I like Quaid, too, but i think Malkovich and Sinese read their lines in a much more realistic, convincing way. Just one example: Malkovich's reaction to when George throws away his mouse is absolutely unforgettable! Very few actors could have equaled that kind of emotion.
remember watching this in drama class, with Malcolm Pomroy, drama teacher, 1985. just remembered the film. today,, Of Mice and Men 1981, this was the one.
Great movie! I remember this from when I was a kid. I have not seen the other 3 versions but this 1981 Robert Blake and Randy Quaid movie stuck with me through the years. I have not been able to find a DVD or Blu-ray of this 1981 version : (

I kept asking myself, why great authors always write stories to break your heart .when the collie got it, It hurt. and that asshole w/ his luger couldn't wait to kill the poor dog. apparently a metaphor for George & Lenny.
I read the book whilst i was in school and then had no idea just what it was that i was reading and then I came across this classic story in a charity shop and then i could not help but to just lend it out just like a my own small personal libary kind of saying too the young man you really have too read this, but be warned it may break your heart.
I noticed how curley’s wife has a name in this version, doesnt wear a red dress and it seems like she gets choked out instead of lennie breaking her neck. Also crooks doesnt get called the n word
Gotta add that Sherilyn Fenn's performance in Malkovich film is better... and tremendous. She gives so much depth to this very complicated character who is flirtatious, but frustrated and lonely. Yates is excellent, too; but i think she is TOO SERIOUS for this part, and comes off more as a mature older person who has learned a lot about human feelings.
That's because it's a repertory performance. Like playing a composition from a sheet of music. Other than the nuances of the musician's attack, in this instance, the actor's delivery, it shouldn't veer from how it's written.
I was touched by the movie, but I find the portrayal of the strong man with an intellectual disability as Not knowing the difference between tenderness and harming someone to be an inaccurate and prejudicial stereotype.
I entirley disagree, my brother is employed working with the mentally disabled and there is a very large man who reminds me of lenny very much. But it is also important to note this was written in 1937 and the people of 1937 are not comparable to the people of 2023.
@@Woodman-Spare-that-tree That is the problem. A stereotype takes its definition from real life, creates exaggerations and prejudices, and applies them to inappropriately to whole classes of people.

1992 version is better. that instant shot is still shocking and heartbreaking... Lennie died the happiest person in the world. very sad and haunting moment for George though.
it needed to happen though, lenny was nothing but trouble and he got in the way, he harmed animals although he didnt mean to, he was not taught any better, nor was he capable of being anything but a hindrance.
