  • An excellent lecture on what the Bible says (and doesn't say) about hell.
Dr. Paula Gooder is a Christian theologian. She received her Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) from Oxford. She is Canon Theologian of Birmingham and Guildford Cathedrals, Vice president of the Bible Society, and Visiting lecturer at King's College, London.

Jesus Himself warned, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matt. 10:28).

This seems more than a bit woolly to me. I wish it didn't but the New Testament does speak of an eternal punishment for those who do not follow Christ - Eg., Rev 21: 8 to quote one example, John 3:18 to quote another. The picture I see in the New Testament IS NOT one where most people are saved almost by default and only those who are especially and obviously evil go to hell. Even the disciples seem to have been warned at times - If your foot causes you to stumble, etc. I am also a bit staggered by her hesitation over the question "Where does belief in Jesus come into all this?" That is fundamental to salvation. Saving faith = reliance upon, adherence to, ie., a faith which is not just an intellectual assent but a faith which evidences itself in a changed life.

The lake of fire is holy fire. Streams issue from the throne. It purifies and baptises. It is grace, the great physician's ultimate medicine to consume the sin of unbelief. The nations emerge from it repentant to bring their glory to the throne and receive healing. Please do not misrepresent the fire as carnal literal and retributive.

This is superb. Paula is so so clear to understand, shame the same can't be said about biblical answers. Fuzzy, hazy are among some of the phrases used to describe the deficiencies and inaccuracies.
Isn't it ironic that the people who would oppose God are probably the same people who oppose the idea of an eternal hell finding it immoral and disgusting so therefore oppose the God of this doctrine. Catch 22.

It's not so bad for us non believers down here. No Billy Grahams playing golf while advocating bombing Vietnam.

In Arabic and closely related Aramaic, the definite article remains: "A(l) Shaitan.". Seems, though, Satan as an accuser or tester is Zoroastrian. Wasn't Job written during the Persian occupation?

    John 17:12
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
It is none other than Paul the anti christ...who gave 666

In Islam a Satan (ShayTan) is any evil being (Djin, humans or animals).
And The Satan is called (Iblis) and he is from the Djin kind he is a Djin kind.
Angels are created from light, mankind is made from fire and mankind is made of clay/mud/earth/soil.
Iblis (the Satan) was a very rightous djin and he lived among the angels in the heaven. (This heaven is differen than the heaven that is opposite to hellfire). When Allah created Adam he asked the angels to prostrate to Adam (out of respect to gods new creation). The Satan refused out of arrogance. (He said "How come you ask me to prostate to what you created from soil while you created me from fire.")
So the sin to which he got kicked out of heaven is arrogance and refusal to obey Allah's order.
We believe that angels never disobey Allah.
