  • Here is Real Rugby's list of the five greatest Springbok scrumhalves in history. Very little footage is available of Fonnie du Toit and Danie Craven, but there is consensus in the rugby community in South Africa that both these players were legends. Notable omissions are Piet Uys and Divan Serfontein.
    We hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching!

    Joost will always have a special place in the hearts of all the people who were lucky enough to be able to watch him play.

      And somehow Dumb Blond Pienaar preferred Johan Roux.

    What a player Joost was. Every time I see footage like this, I feel so sad he's gone. As a Scot, I'll always group Joost and our Doddie in the pantheon of the greats.

    Fourie du Preez, simply a great footballer.....no room for Serfontein of the early 80's? Rated highly here in Kiwiland.

      Agree, he was good. I think Joost was the best. Also, Naas Botha was 19 on the recent Rapport list, he was very good also, forgotten like Divan, fresh memories only when picks are made?

    Like many, many others Joost was my all time favorite, he was the ultimate competitor and brilliant individualist, who was an athlete bar none. However then came Fourie du Preez, and in terms of scrumhalf play, was overall better than Joost, tactically he had no equal, many flyhalves wouldn't even be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with him. I believe Joost was the better opportunist and more explosive of the two but Fourie was incredible astute, he dictated the game. That said very, very few players could score the tries Joost could, his stats are off the wall, 56 tries in 111 matches for the Springboks, for a scrumhalf!

      My all time fav was All Black halfback Dave Loveridge until I saw Fourie. As generals of the game they are very similar but I have to give it to Fourie. As a Kiwi it was a pleasure to watch him play.

    Good list and certainly agree with you on Divan Serfontein, who was small even for a scrummie, but sooo nuggety. Joost must surely be one of the best, of not the best scrumhalf of all times worldwide. It would be interesting to compare the number of tries he scored on an average per test with guys like Syd Going and Gareth Edwards. Personally I think a big part of rating Joost so high has to be his longevity and consistency. He was a hard act to follow.

    Great video as always. I know people might have a heart attack but for me Fourie Du Preez is number one. Followed extremely closely by Joost.

    Garth Wright & Divan Serfontein should definitely be in the mix, they where not big runners but the best distributor and readers of the game. Very quick on the pass much much faster then joost/dup. Great to have quick passers back in the spring team

      Wright only pickup and ran with the ball once in each half, and most of the time those ended up in a try.

      I was in the Army with Garth in 90 - In Doornkop Group 18. He was a LT with the signal corps but never in base. He was always training or playing rugby. Nice guy.

    All good. Almost impossible to compare them. Also depends on the era and pack they had in front of them.

    I don't think it's fair to list players from the amateur and pro eras together. The playing conditions and training was so different I don't think they can be compared. Also no Robert Du Preez?!?!? Good choices on Joost and Fourie. Hard to tell which was better. I think Joost was but that's a conversation you could keep going forever.

    • @EnricoduPlessis
      @EnricoduPlessis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you on Robert du Preez. He certainly is worth at least a mention. However, I do not think du Preez deserves to replace any of the candidates on this list. Good point about comparing different players from different eras. However, my feeling from all the videos I have watched is that Real Rugby is very knowledgeable on all eras and probably rates players 'in their time'. I will say this though - there are some players from the earlier days that I believe will be able to fill the boots of some of the best of today. Like him or not, I think Naas must be one. Same for some guys like Phil Bennet, David Campese, Gysie Pienaar, Brian Williams (All Black wing), Carel du Plessis and Hugo Porta.
