I know I'm late to this but he said "Karate man" and "Gloves on feet and hand" that literally narrows it down to a handful of people. Bruce Lee was not a fan of said rulesets as only Kickboxing and Karate actually really adopted that not to mention Bruce was never a "Karate Man" BUT Mas "GodHand" Oyama the founder of Kyokushin Karate and who the Baki Character Doppo Orochi is modeled after would certainly qualify. The issue with this pick is that Kyokushin also was all about full contact and bare knuckle at the time. Let's also keep in mind that the 60s were the beginning of the 3 decade long golden age of martial arts and thus his great fame in Japan had a solid chance of reaching US shores. We ended up with the Inoki fight but the way he described the fighter it appears that Inoki was not who he was referring to.

I know I'm late to this but he said "Karate man" and "Gloves on feet and hand" that literally narrows it down to a handful of people. Bruce Lee was not a fan of said rulesets as only Kickboxing and Karate actually really adopted that not to mention Bruce was never a "Karate Man" BUT Mas "GodHand" Oyama the founder of Kyokushin Karate and who the Baki Character Doppo Orochi is modeled after would certainly qualify. The issue with this pick is that Kyokushin also was all about full contact and bare knuckle at the time.
Let's also keep in mind that the 60s were the beginning of the 3 decade long golden age of martial arts and thus his great fame in Japan had a solid chance of reaching US shores. We ended up with the Inoki fight but the way he described the fighter it appears that Inoki was not who he was referring to.
