    If you are interested in this reel, make sure you watch the next part, as I found some significant issues with the reel.

    I think the unfinished edging was purposefully done in quite a tasteful way. Typically the powdercoat especially around those edges, get dinged/ banged causing chips and wear fast which would make it uglier in my opinion. Looks slick and they are a good reel.

    Absolutely beautiful reel. The smaller teeth really make it smooth. Shimano just started the tiny gear teeth but only on their most expensive spinning reel. Fantastic video and I look forward to seeing what could possibly be the bad part of this reel.

    extremely detailed review, as for the knobs, i don't think will make any diffrace on bass fishing foam knobs are better because they are less slippery , i have not found any reel to match abu revo beast on durability and casting

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      daiwa is trying to push this reel to bass anglers, because that's where the money is. Catfish anglers buy the cheap crap. But this reel is way too big and heavy to cast all day. The Revo beast is different category. It is much lighter and is a great bass reel. This daiwa would be good for the musky guys actually, to cast heavy lures all day, but there is not that many musky guys, and daiwa does not care to advertise to them. This reel... if you hold it and feel the frame... u will immediately feel it is for something heavy duty.

      we should go bass fishing with my boat next year... never found time, but should do it next year. You can try it then. Maybe we go to Braidwood, and keep switching... some bass in the morning, drag for catfish at noon, bass again later on... Braidwood is good for everything

      @@ifishcatfish the reel is too big for a bass fishing , it be good for big lures or musky fisherman, bass reels are getting lighter and lighter, i can tell just by u holding it , u wont be able to cast this reel for more then an hour or two max, but yea i'm always down for fishing :D as long as i dont have a tournament coming up the weekend we can go

    I still think this reel is beautiful! The clicking drag is an awesome feature! Wish my C3s had this instead of a clicker! I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the mag brakes will be on the bad video! Simply because almost every low profile bass reel has mag brakes for casting different weight lures.

  • @SILKYSMOOTH30FPS

    Also, if you like the noise of the drag, put as little grease on the pin as possible. The more grease you put, the more muffled its gonna be.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured this many years ago. I remember the first time I figured it... that winter I went through 24 spinning reels and degreased all of them and have never used grease on the drag ever since.

    Hello man, can ya tell me. New ryoga's pinion gear made from stainless steel , or brass?

  • @SILKYSMOOTH30FPS
    @SILKYSMOOTH30FPS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The clutch on old and new Ryogas is not stainless steel, its plastic. You can tell its plastic by the sound the clutch makes when re-engaged after a cast.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kept correcting myself in the video, of course it is not stainless steel... this is the look they go for. But the thumb bars are aluminum, not plastic. The sound is also metallic, extremely metallic. I am very surprised by your comment. Maybe it is time for me to buy a microphone. I am shooting this video on iphone7.

    • @SILKYSMOOTH30FPS
      @SILKYSMOOTH30FPS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifishcatfish It is not. The pitch it has is made because its hollow on the inside (remove the spool and have a peek on the clutch from the spool side, you will see an opening). I have the silver ryoga for many years now, serviced it many times. Its plastic that looks like aluminium. The clutch is exactly the same on the newer Ryoga's so it is pretty much guaranteed to be plastic as well.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i see it is hollow and that makes sense, but I am hitting it with a screwdriver and it makes a metal noise. Maybe it is plastic and has some metal surface? Two of my reels are in the garage, and when you touch it it is so cold... I still can't believe this is plastic.. I am knocking on my other baitcasters now... those sound different.. Maybe the alloy is different...

    • @SILKYSMOOTH30FPS
      @SILKYSMOOTH30FPS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifishcatfish It has a metalic powder coating (the older Millionaire reels had the same thing). I removed it at least twice to clean the thing, it is 100% plastic. Even Tackletour were wrong when they've stated that it was metal in the 2009 review of the silver Ryoga (because they haven't fully disassembled the whole reel). Also, the next time the clutch is cold, touch it, you will see that the cold feel will be gone in a few seconds while the other metal parts will feel cold for a while when on your skin. That is because a metal coated plastic does not preserve cold as well as pure metal. There is another way to tell that it is plastic. Look underneath the clutch, you will see that on the right or left of the clutch, there will be a mark from the mold it was made in.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      looks like you are right. Definitely the thumb bar warms up faster than the frame of the reel. I am not sure that has practical importance, but I was not aware that you can fake real metal so well.

  • @TackleAdvisors
    @TackleAdvisors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    MMMMMMMMMMMMM round reel porn!!!! Before I gave away the Kyohga I was amazed at how precise that ar clutch was with such a long handle. Something that in shimano's past was kind of sloppy which took away from an otherwise spectacular reel. Not that it mattered on the water but it was just cool seeing it perfected. I don't think I'll ever get rid of my TE DC. It's just too perfect of a tool.
    Cool to NOT hear a peep out of it when turning. As usually you can hear the friction surfaces of the worm gear when bench fondling. I wouldn't doubt that they simplified the drag stack due to tiny gear teeth although beveled. Im not a believer in them at all what so ever. It's just something that only a few have the tooling for so they can do it when others can't. (I asked us manufacturers and they aren't able to)

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and that coil spring...it's only purpose is to keep the drag star in a fixed position as the nut threads up and down. Reels that have the star itself threaded do not have that spring. It's there for aesthetics only. And doesn't effect compression :)

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, mr. TA : )
      What part of the new gear design exactly does not impress you? Durability and towing power? I need time and catfish to test that, but I will. However the gears definitely have quite different feeling from previous Ryogas. I know those 'feelings' are not reliable, but this one is. Very different feel, and this one definitely feels as the gears fit better. The Kyogas are the same reel as my blue Bay jiggin but with purple paint as far as i can tell. I don't know if i prefer the zero-gear-feel or whether it improves power and power transfer efficiency but people in the shops will immediately detect the difference, and maybe that's all that daiwa wants.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think i can actually open and check the spring. If it is thin and weak, you are right. But you still need something in the drag to compress when u tighten the drag. Otherwise the drag knob will not put any pressure on the single disk until you touch it, and when you touch it the knob will suddenly feel super tight and wont go much further. Or my logic is wrong altogether. But then how do u create a knob that travels that many turns down and keeps increasing the pressure smoothly?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifishcatfish on the schematic you see part #108 that nut is what presses the ar clutch sleeve against the top drag washer. And it is keyed to the backside of the drag star.
      The spring gently keeps the star pressed against the underside of the handle. Shimano does that as well as some other daiwa reels.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ifishcatfish I'm just wary of tiny teeth of disimilar metals. I get the beveled angle allows multiple teeth to remain in contact vs a standard spurr cut gear. But I never noticed a difference between feel between shimano micro module gears and standard. And that's over the course of decades of dozens and dozens of baitcasters. And having had a failure of a micro module gear set when I've never really had an issue in the past. Just makes me wonder if it's good in the long run. If the main gear that's beveled is thick enough with a sizeable contact area than I'd not worry at all...But at the same time....beveled gears with heavy lures could mean a more stout thumbar actuation is needed because it has to turn the gears in order to move the yoke to release the spool.... :) It's probably a big noting burger.....But those are just some things that go through my mind when I see it...know what I mean?? :)

    You can't compare the Ryoga 2018 with the blue Ryoga BJ. The reason the Ryoga BJ doesn't have Mag-Z is because it is for jigging which is why it is called "BJ", short for "Bay Jigging". The correct comparison should have been with the old Ryoga which is silver and it does have Mag-Z just like the Ryoga 2018 as shown in the following clip: th-cam.com/video/GM4CE5878tU/w-d-xo.html

    • @Rascallucci
      @Rascallucci 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, I just wanted to make the point the blue one that you have is for light saltwater jigging and not casting like the clip I showed you with the old Ryoga. In other words, there is a proper reason why it doesn't have the proper full blown Mag-Z casting brakes. That is also why the Ryoga BJ came with a single power handle for the 2025 size at the time as shown in this pic. www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/product_info.php/language/en/products_id/21720/cPath/21_39_43_2637/saltwater-fishing.html

      @@Rascallucci funny you post this link. I got all 4 of these ryogas from that website. All of them were 50% off MSRP. In reality they were like 25% off the current ebay price.
      On the brakes, i said the same thing in the first cut of the video - you don't need brakes to drop a jig (usually heavy when saltwater) vertically down. However this video was way over an hour and I had to cut many things and split it into two parts to try to hide the true size. Also, this way if I get thumbs down on the Bad part, it wont affect the other. Thanks for dropping a comment on a small channel like this!

    WITH those blue and silver Ryogas, ya don't even need that new one! other than its black. They are more of a kitty-kat fisherman reel. That new black reel is for those wacky bass fisheman that only talk about constant casting and light weight-ness....such pussies! I LUV THE FOAM KNOBS. '''OLDER RYOGAS HAVE MAGS'', I HAVE MANY. ole schoolers, old Abu Garcia's we used the ''centifugal'' for everything. They got rid of those shrapnels cuz, muskie casters didn't buy enough of them.
