I have a Ryoga 2020h (right hand) and only problem was the Side Plate would unscrew on it's own. I found this out when I would try to reel in after a cast and the gears would slip and not pull in the line. Finally found out the circular plate on the left was unscrewing which I was relieved to find out on a outpost trip. I simply screwed it back in and all worked fine. I would keep checking this throughout the day and all worked fine. I fixed this problem for good by unscrewing it a bit and putting plumbers tape in the screw channel and screwing it on hard. Since that 2yrs ago it does not unscrew. I've been using this Ryoga 2020h for 4 seasons (1 week each) and been very satisfied for casting big musky lures (but....I'm a baitcasting 1st time users)

Hi Bungie! Thq for sharing your personal experience with the previous Ryoga versions. You are so right! I have friends on the older models still singing praises about the smoothness of these reels! Hi, I know this video is almost 3 years old but I was wondering if there's any update on the reel? I'm planning to get one of these but I'm also thinking about getting Calcutta. My main concern is the durability because I wanted it to last long especially against monster snakeheads. From personal experience, a reel gear or their drag seems to be the first to get worn out so I wonder how does the durability of the Ryoga compares to Calcutta especially in the long term?
Hi so sorry for the slow reply! I missed your message! Can't believe the video has been out that long! Covid-19 sure makes time fly! I will be as honest as I can to your question. I have not had issues with the Ryoga after the 1 or 2 prior incidents I mentioned in my vids & they weren't related to the reel gear or drag. But the Calcutta has been flawless by far in performance although I use it lesser than the Ryoga. Having said that, we must expect both reels to undergo fair wear & tear over time even if put to correct proper use. This is something I understand will occur down the road even though they are top tier high end models from 2 great brands! I have a concern about your plans to use these reels to tackle monster Snakeheads though. You do realise these reels were designed for Japanese Black Bass right? In all honesty I feel both these reels are poor choices for the fish you seek. Using them against Snakeheads will only accelerate the wear of parts. Even metal will fatigue over time. The Ryoga couldn't stop a strong Snakehead on stock drag. My Calcutta has drag modified up to 10kgs & I fear that'll take a toll on the reel sooner than later. My advice is save the money look at maybe the Abus instead. I'm suggesting them in lieu of your target species. Those Abus are super workhorses & the amount of drag power is crazy on top of the heavy duty gear meant to take on strong fishes. Most importantly, you can probably get 2 reels, 1 slow crank for divers & 1 high speed retrieve for the price of 1 Ryoga or Calcutta! 😊 Hope I wasn't too long winded & my 2 cents' worth helped you in some ways! Stay safe, healthy & happy fishing! 😊
I think this sensation of the reel holding back is a phenomenon that happens to ALL daiwa reels. When I first bought my Zillion TW it was amazing to cast, after 1 season I had to overhaul the reel to get it even close to where it was. The same thing is happening to my tatula sv tw it’s quite odd.
Thq for sharing your experiences with Daiwa baitcasters! Have you managed to pinpoint the cause of this oddness? Love to hear more from you. On my end, the ryoga actually became a better caster after I made a decision to disregard Daiwa’s factory “zero adjust” feature, opting to loosen the cast control instead. Once done, the sensation I noticed definitely went away which is a pretty good thing for me. But having said that, I’m definitely not impressed with Daiwa’s recent introduction of so called “new features” into their baitcasters. Much of it seems more gimmicky & cost saving to gain higher profit margins than anything. Their previous generations of reels work way better for me.

Sorry for the slow response again... Not sure why I'm not getting notifications! Maybe I was in China the past 2 weeks. 🤣🤣🤣 I'm just like you backside also very itchy like trying different rods & reels! You seem to have a penchant for round reels?
The standard 1016 spool is designed to cast from 10gm up. The SV allows casting lures down to 3.5gm. So by changing out spools you can also increase your lure casting range! 😊
I've got the same problem with my slp works 1016hl. The reel is nearly new and it does the same cracking sound sometimes during casting. Any idea what is the problem? Cheers
So sorry I missed your message & came late to reply! Now that you mentioned it, I totally forgot to ask when my returned after repairs! Seriously I don't know what went wrong till today. None of my other daiwas had this issue. Did you managed to fix your reel? If you do find out what went wrong please do share? Thank you so much! 😊
This reel uses the 34mm spools. There are a ton of shallow and deep spools available for the Ryoga. There are also multiple SV spools available for it.
Thq so much for highlighting this! I wasn't too sure back then if the aftermarket spools would fit or if they even had it till recently! Great to know. I may get 1 to test if I'm keeping this ryoga
@@SingaporeJerkerFishing If you want a long range casting spool, look for R and R+ tuned spools. These spools come inside the Daiwa DTZ Type R, Type R+, TD Ito, Steez 103, Millionaire I'ze Light and Millionaire RINGA SSS. Of course its not worth buying another reel just for the spool, but you can find them on sale separately.
@Bungie you must be 1 very well versed with daiwa baitcasters in lieu of your recommendations! Awesome! Much to learn from you! 😁 How do you rate the newer gen SV spools against those your mentioned? The spools you highlighted are 34mm as well? Love to hear from you!
@@SingaporeJerkerFishing Yes, all spools i've mentioned are 34mm (steez platform which the Ryoga and many other daiwa/megabass reel uses). SV spools are good for control, not distance. If you fish from the bank and need maximum distance, i wouldn't suggest an SV spool. If you fish from a boat and do short to mid range casts and lots of skipping, flipping and pitching, the SV spools will be better for that. The only G1 SV spool i've tested was from the 2016 Zillion TW (which is also compatible with the Ryoga), it was great, casted further than the old SV spools, but not as far as the R and R+ tuned spools.
Thanks for the enlightenment! I'll prob go check the R spools out. I've never tried them before but heard they can be rather temperamental & require a tad more focus to control? Btw a question was posed by another viewer under this vid about whether getting a ryoga would be redundant if he owns the steez sv tw? Care to offer your thoughts? I think it might prove very helpful & insightful to hear you thoughts if you care to share with him/her?
I own this reel and have had the plastic ring break. Waited a long time for parts to come from daiwa that i had to pay for. The side plate is also loose and wobbles when you Palm it. As for the spool you can use zillion spools.
Hi Zoki! Thq so much for sharing your experiences! So sorry to hear you had the same prob as me. Yes I'm thinking to get different spools for the ryoga if I'm keeping it. Glad to hear from another ryoga user! Hope you like the vid! 😊
Great video,I’ve just got a ryoga and not fished it yet but on testing the spool spin it doesn’t revolve for very long at all.did you loosen the cast control right to the limit?
Thq for the kind encouragement! Yes, I actually just very slightly loosened the cast control although daiwa claims this reel is a zero adjuster. But definitely not to the limit. Not sure if you’re familiar with daiwa spools but their spools will not spin for a super long time like those you see on vids or centrifugal style ones ie. Shimano. You need to fix a lure to the end of the line & go cast to test the “magic” 😉! Magnetic braking spools are somewhat different. Don’t make the mistake I feel many do by thinking a reel is super good if the spool spins forever 🤣 Just go cast this awesome reel man! 😊😊😊
@@SingaporeJerkerFishing thanks for you’re reply,no I’m not familiar with daiwa bc reel this is the first one I have owned the only other reels I have are conquest 200 and conquest bfs they seem to spin forever didn’t realise about the mag brakes.I’ll get it spooled up and casting 😀👍🏻thanks my friend
For the type of lures you cast, 30lb line is too heavy, it still works but not so ideal. I think this reel is more suited to heavier lures and swimbaits? Try the Millionare CT SV.... same thing but more finesse and will shine with the type of weights you are casting
Thanks for the comment! Actually I’ve ironed out the cause of the initial problem. My cast control at factory setting was too tight hence the spool wasn’t spooling at its max potential. Adjusted it & it’s casting really well now. While I agree the new Millionaire will be a great caster for finesse & light(er) lures, the Ryoga shines & is great for lures 10gm &/or above which is its ideal casting tolerance. And for the terrain which has plenty of underwater snags I’m casting into, 30lb braided is the least I’ll go. I’m actually not a braided person most of the time esp in Singapore. I prefer using either full fluorocarbon or nylon monofilament. And trust me, 30lb casts a mighty long way for braided even when compared to much lighter braided line classes. This I have proved multiple times when casting alongside other casters. I’ll sadly have to disagree on the 30lb braided being too heavy here. I see many anglers locally trying to use really thin braided lines thinking it’ll cast further on bc. Sadly it’s far from true. Look at the Americans & Japs casting a mile on 65lb braided. And the lures they use aren’t heavy. Additionally lighter braideds have a very high tendency to bust off during casts esp with a bad cast or when you get the bird’s nest. That’ll be goodbye to your precious lure. Bear in mind 30lb braided is merely about 10lb diameter equivalent for fluorocarbon or nylon, & braided weighs significantly lesser than the other 2. And my regular non braided lines are at least 14lbs or more which is thicker & heavier but they still go a long way for me. 30lb braided to me considered really thin & light. I’ve even casted 10gm on 80lb braided with distance. I’m probably going to make at least a few people angry by saying this but till date, I feel many anglers esp in Singapore still don’t really know much about how to really use lines per se. There’s really so much about lines to understand. On top of that, lines are just a fraction of an entire setup that determines castability & distance or even accuracy. I might be wrong but you sound like a bfs player &/or strictly braided line user. If so, I can see where you’re coming from. It’s an interesting angle from your perspective. Thanks for sharing your thought! 🙂
There are many many factors. And in this case you discovered it was a cast control that was too tight. I don't disagree with you! If you cast on 30lb and it works, so be it. As you mentioned, a lesser chance of snapping on cast, more abrasion resistance. But I don't think I'm wrong to say that generally given the same variables, a lighter line will go farther, and also give better sensitivity. The other factor is how well the line sinks (again dependent on whether you want it to float or sink) and how it affects the lure action. It's really all an angler's personal decision and preference. Cannot say you are right or wrong, just what you are after and what you prefer. I'm not very experienced but I've tried everything from 2.2lb ajing line to 3 pound braided to PE 3 braided. The line determines fighting style also - light lines you gotta tire the fish, strong lines you can just steer and power the fish in, absolutely necessary especially when there are snags ... The braking system also matters. Finesse brakes will always shine for lighter weights and heavy-duty brakes like Ryoga I assume will shine better with heavier lures. But I stand to be corrected :) What I'm really interested to know is whether Ryoga can cast 3.5g lures a decent distance.
Merry Xmas 🎄🎅! Sorry for the slow response as I've been travelling since! Didn't see your comments till now! Not getting notifications recently, not sure why? Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes. I definitely agree there's really no definitive right or wrong when it comes to fishing. Really depends on situation & circumstances. Honestly, I don't think the Ryoga will cast 3.5g even properly out of the box. The Millionaire will outcast it no doubt. Its designed for 10g upwards. That's where it'll shine. BUT, should the stock spool be replaced with a SV spool the situation might change. I've not tried it yet so I wouldn't dare go in depth. In theory it should do well, provided the Ryoga's mag brakes work proper with the SV spool. Love to hear your thoughts? Anyway thq again for your opinions! Really appreciate great feedback! Helps me learn at the same time 😁 Please feel free anytime to share more! Again, have the Merriest Xmas 🎄! 😊
You're right! I'm just lazy & I've lots of 30lb braided lying around so that's what I'll just usually spool in. Plus I don't need that much line so 30lb should be right about 100m & that works out just ok for me. Then I'll use it like a lower poundage line or like mono. End of the day the drag can't go very high even on full lock so all evens out 😬
Hey there, long time no see. Sorry to hear you've had some issues with the Ryoga. Mine has been mostly fine. Casting wise is OK, but you may have a point about the sensation of being held back a little. I think when the Mag-Z slows down the spool towards the end of the cast, it is a little more noticeable than the Mag-Z on the low profile counterparts. On my reel, you can actually hear it slowing down. But, overall it still casts pretty far as far as round reels go. Other than that, I agree with you 100% on the smoothness of the crank. More importantly the cranking power is unmatched as compared to the rest of my reels in my arsenal. I even tested it against a Ocea Calcutta 201 PG which has a low gear ratio of 5.0:1 and the Ryoga trumps it. While I have the CC model which has a lower gear ratio than yours, it is still not as low as the Ocea Calcutta, but somehow it is just more powerful. Drag wise, no issue. Daiwa is always honest with their drag figures. 13.5lbs is more than enough. That is miles better than most Shimanos which can't match their claimed drag figures. My only regret if you can call it that is I feel I should have gone for the 1520 size instead. Why? Well, when I cast with the 1016, especially when I use a heavier lure that can cast far, I can see the bottom of the spool which is never a good feeling. So, say if I were to do shore casting on a longer rod like a 8'+, it is quite possible I could spool myself. So, sure while the 1016 is lighter which is great, but if I could only own one then I would pick the 1520. Lastly, in terms of "pimping", I am not a fancy kind of a guy (at least as far as fishing reel goes, LOL), for me is all about function and I always prefer a longer handle. I think I might have told you before, I upgraded to a 100mm carbon handle which comes with smoked silver aluminium knobs. It feels alright, but I would prefer rubber knobs, but just not the stock ones which are too thin. The 1520 stock knobs would have been perfect, so I might order those bigger RCS rubber knobs. Let me see whether you can see a link of a pic of my reel which is on a Facebook Singapore fishing group. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156708409518203&set=g.204048092964547&type=1&theater&ifg=1 Oh, one last thing, let me which you a Wonderful X'Mas & Happy New Year!!

Dang, sorry about that. May be I should upload it onto my own Facebook page later and see whether it will work. Anyway, 2019 is already around the corner and the Japan Fishing Show in Yokohama will kick off on Feb 18, I can't wait to see what Shimano and Daiwa have installed for us. LOL.
The screw in side plate on the older ryogas was perfect. why the hell did they change that? so dumb. Sell this one and get yourself the Silver ryoga. Its a tank.
😂 Still deliberating on sell or hold. But I really feel the new design to lock & release the side plate while is convenient, wasn't thought out too well for long term durability. Shimano does it way better on the Calcutta Conquest. The Ryoga's exposed plastic ring needs much caution when handling. I'm even a little scared to try & touch the trigger now...
Ive sold dozens and dozens of these reels , and own one myself, without any issues. You cannot draw conclusions based on one individual reel having a failure. Its directly misleading.
Hi! Yes I understand where you're coming from. I was expressing as well as sharing my personal opinion and own user experience that's all. There was never any intent to mislead. Oh ya, what is the diff between 1016 and the 1016sv, sv spool?
And in this case you discovered it was a cast control
that was too tight.
But I stand to be corrected :)
What I'm really interested to know is whether Ryoga can cast 3.5g lures a decent distance.
15-20 lb test is the best for that reel. It’s designed not to be that extreme.
You're right! I'm just lazy & I've lots of 30lb braided lying around so that's what I'll just usually spool in. Plus I don't need that much line so 30lb should be right about 100m & that works out just ok for me. Then I'll use it like a lower poundage line or like mono. End of the day the drag can't go very high even on full lock so all evens out 😬
GREAT VIDEO!!!
Hi Rueben! Great to hear from you! Thq so much! Have the merriest Xmas 🎄 in advance! 😊
Has anyone heard of the Daiwa pluton. Does anyone know how is that baitcaster overall compared to this ryoga? Thanks
Hi Joel! There's a good review here of the Pluton! www.tackletour.com/reviewdaiwapluton.html
Hi Alex! Merry Xmas 🎄! Long time no see haha! Great to hear from u & wonderful to have ur usual awesome comments! Ya... My reel has indeed given me some headaches. Going to test it out soon, hopefully no more probs from now till eternity!
Perhaps u can consider getting the 1520 also? It should serve u well.
Tried taking a look at what u did with ur reel but couldn't access the pic...
LOL.
U sound very similar to BCSG like scary similar.
😂 Is that so? You're the 1st to say... Unfortunately I can't change my voice 🤣🤣🤣 Ok I'll try to go higher or lower pitch for the next vid! 😉
And I doubt if I ever claimed my 1 faulty reel means the entire product line has issues. That's my position. I hope this sheds clarity to your good self as well as all viewers.
@SingaporeJerkerFishing Yes sorry I never meant that you did it intentionally!
No apologies required 😊! I always feel it's great to have different perspectives from others! Provides a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter! I'm really glad you contributed your angle on the Ryoga! 😊
