I feel like what separates Luka from a lot of foreign prospects isn’t that he wasn’t some project that had the body but needed to develop their skills. He was incredibly skilled and natural feel for the game, he wasn’t a project at all

    • @pinobluevogel6458
      @pinobluevogel6458 ปีที่แล้ว +32

He was an experienced player already when he joined the NBA, he was euroleague basketbal MVP.
Besides being ahead of the curve in development, he also has some unique aspects that very few NBA players have, at least at his level. The ability to break down defenses and run plays is off the charts, especially for his age. He can make incredibly difficult passes, often manipulating the defenders with no-looks or shotfakes. (in my opinion only Jokic is marginally better at this) He is a huge guy, but his ability to switch tempo or stop on a dime is insane. He also plays really physical, but without fouling or it is so subtle the refs can't see it, but it takes his man off balance nonetheless.
The ability to make shots while getting fouled, his finishing at the rim, incredible shotmaking with fadeaways, stepback and logo threes, his offensive package is more diverse than almost any player in the league. Also, he has improved as a defender, getting into passing lanes, making the occasional block or flatout pickpocketing his man with his quick hands.
I think all of this is what seperates Luka from a lot of foreign prospects.

I think it's time for the NBA to lower the Age Limit in the G-League to 16. Doing this would allow kids to develop their game on a NBA level B4 they get Drafted to the NBA. Luka Doncic & other sports like soccer proves that young pros 16+ are more likely to become superstars with ofc exceptions of unicorns like Lebron, MJ, Magic etc.

What was your scenario for the Spurs getting Luka? IMO, the Spurs' best chance would have been to heavily tank that season. Playoff teams were most likely to trade for KL. Hence, the Spurs would not have received high first round draft picks. The teams at the top of the draft were unlikely to trade all the way down for multiple lower picks and/or future picks.

There wasn’t a team in the league that wouldn’t trade for a healthy Kawaii at that point in his career, but he was sitting out and no one knew his status. It being California and near his hometown, I think it’s plausible that he would have stayed…at least, the Kings would have convinced themselves of that. It’s not like they have a history of always hitting on their top picks, so why the hell wouldn’t they go for it with a player of that caliber?

You spurs fans may have wanted luka, but the spurs organization very clearly didn't care about luka. The spurs didn't want lotto picks, they wanted an all star player back for kawhi. And they got demar, an all star. They also got raps 2019 first round pick but that's irrelevant cuz luka was drafted in 2018. If they wanted picks, they easily could have gotten 3 first round picks from another team including a 2018 pick, plus salary filler. And if they really really wanted luka, the spurs woulda tanked in 2017-2018 season by trading LA during the season for a bunch of picks. Instead they chose to try and compete even with kawhi sitting practically the whole season, knowing full well that their pick would not be high enough to get luka since they were a playoff team. So don't blame kawhi for sitting out that season, he was tryna do y'all a favor. Blame the spurs for not taking advantage of that and tanking the season for luka. But hey, at least they learned their lesson now and traded dejounte for picks so they could tank for wemby, which they failed to do for luka.

Because Luka has been such a huge success so early, it kind of overshadows who Trae is.
Here’s a fact, at 24 years old he has a career average of 25/9/3.
That is beyond next level. Go look at any great guards career stats at 24, and very few match what Trae has put up. Just look at Curry’s numbers at age 24 compared to Trae.
Spoiler alert- Trae almost doubles him in stats at that age.
That trade was the single best both got what they wanted trade.
Trae was considered a bust coming, by almost 90% of ‘experts’ pre draft, and he has buried that label. Buried it almost day one.
Luka has just been a step better at a young age.
And to be honest, Trae gets a ton of whiny heat, and hasn’t really earned it. Every single time Atlanta loses we have to hear how Young is the issue. When Atlanta wins, no one says a word. Weird dichotomy there.

I guess those teams remembered that EY players have a lot of bust potential and wasnt willing to gamble. But I had watched Luka's tapes for about 2 years before he got draft so it was obvious he was going to be a top player. It seems like a good fit for both players. There is no guarantee that Luka gets minutes immediately on Atlanta. Yes the existing roster wasn't deep, though there were a number of established players already there.
The Atlanta team was also tall so maybe Luka stays a SF the replace Vince Carter and Point God Luka never is.
Likewise Dallas were still Dirk's team and had a tonne of small players so likely Trae doesn't get as much run early on an his one out scoring doesn't blossom as quickly as he needs to fit into an established system with a lot of big guys who are good scorers in their own rights.

After having Nowitski for a generation, it makes sense that Dallas would try to duplicate that success, with Dirk mentoring a relatable young player. Fortunately it worked out exactly as planned.
On the other hand, Trae young is half a great player. He can score 50 in a game and they still have a good chance of losing. Much like Damian Lilliard. Star players that can’t play defense never get to the NBA Finals. Doncic might not get there either, for that matter.

Even if you want to recreate the Warriors, 1. Steph does not always have the ball in hand. 2. Steph passes the ball. 3. Steph moves off the ball.

There are so many factors contributing to a players success and to get it right is insane. Its a miracle were able to even narrow these drafts down to a top 30, top 10 and top 3 but guys still slip through and teams luck into guys later down too. You just never know.
