      @@gladheart8387 it helps lower the pH but it is also a preservative. I am not sure about 'normal' soap bars but if you mean the ones you buy in the store, no because they are already blended and set. If you mean making regular soap then yes as it can be added but you want to make sure you find recipes that include citric acid.

    Ps. You can use the soap after it hardens for about 24 hours, the only reason we let it sit for 4-6 weeks is to make it really hard so it lasts longer when it gets wet. So it doesn't become a mushy bar. And the only soap that takes a long time to harden is pure olive oil soaps, they usually take about 4-6 months to fully harden.

    I dont mean to sound rude by no means, but this isn't shampoo bars. This is just a soap bar. I've been making soap for 7 years now and I make soap bars much like this. One thing I'd like to say is when you use lye (sodium hydroxide) in soap bars , using it on the hair can be very harsh and sometimes damage it. This soap bar will not nourish the hair the same as it will nourish the skin. Shampoo bars are not made with sodium hydroxide ever. But your soap bars look great. Another tip is don't wait 3 days to cut your soap bars. 24 hours is the usual time to cut. Anything longer than that makes the soap too hard to cut with a soap cutter. Usually looks like a cheese cutting string or guitar string.

      that is right, for a shampoo bar you use surfactants, not lye. PH of a soap bar is not suitable for hair.

      As soon as the soap sets up, about 24 hours. You absolutely can use it on the body. You only let the soap bars dry for 4 weeks because it makes them harder and lasts longer in the shower instead of turning into a mush pie. I've been making soap for 7 years and this is also not a shampoo bar, very harsh to use the sodium hydroxide on the scalp. Very surprised she labeled this video as shampoo bars 🙄

    • @kajbathandbodyllc4318
      @kajbathandbodyllc4318 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, you can’t lower the ph of bar soap. But when it comes to making shampoo bars or other cleansing products that need a lower ph, natural surfactants work extremely well. I use two different surfactants in my shampoo bars. Also when you use surfactants instead of using the cp soap method any additives like EOs or extracts survive better during the “making” process. I use aloe Vera and cucumber extract and tee tree in my moisturizing shampoo bar. You can’t use these types of wonderful additives when making lye soap shampoo bars. The tea tree would be okay but the extracts would be toast with that ph level. And if you have hard water... cp soap is definitely a no no on ur hair.
      My favorite surfactant is Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate Powder...
      Copy paste info 👇😁
      SCI Powder, often called baby foam, is a specialty anionic powder surfactant made from all vegetable, renewable resources, primarily coconut. It is used to impart extra mildness, good after feel, and good foaming in many personal care and cleansing products. SCI powder is an excellent foamer in hard or soft water. Naturally derived and biodegradable.
      A top quality gentle surfactant commonly used in acne treatments, anti aging lotions, baby shampoo, bar soap, bath oils, exfoliating scrubs, shaving cream, shower gels, and facial cleaners. You'll find so many uses for this wonderful powder surfactant.
      Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is only slightly miscible in water. Some heat and blending are typically used and needed when formulating to fully incorporate and disperse this surfactant.

    I made these and have used other shampoo bars (even tallow ones) and I’ll say I LOVE the larger of these bars but found them to dry my scalp a bit. On my next round what ingredients should I add or edit to make them more moisturizing?

    • @marcelaabarca623
      @marcelaabarca623 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Castor oil in itself can be drying. If you find you need more moisture, you could try adding coconut oil or avocado oil, which are both very moisturizing. I make a makeup removing oil with the main ingredient to be castor oil, and if I don’t add moisturizing oils to my face afterword, it’s very dry.

    • @JillyBean_1987
      @JillyBean_1987 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marcelaabarca623unless you are adding the coconut oil after the saponification process, I would skip it. When it's turned into soap, coconut oil is VERY cleansing and drying. So I would say olive oil is a good choice, since it's really moisturizing both as oil and once turned into soap. 🙂

    • @debraboyd1779

      This is not shampoo bars, the ingredient in this bar is not meant for the hair. I'm not even sure why she labeled this video as shampoo bars because now there's people trying to make them and have no clue about these ingredients. The reason your scalp is hurting or negatively affected is because (lye) (sodium hydroxide) is not meant to be used for the scalp. Only the skin. This is a basic soap bar, don't use it in your hair.

    What's the lye water ratio when calculating with different oils in the calculator? Would you adjust lye ratio when making bars for kids or different hair types?

    • @ouroilyhouse
      @ouroilyhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you will need to use the calculator to readjust if you change up the recipe.

    • @throlyhd9448
      @throlyhd9448 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      no the lye ratio is only adjusted depending on lather and hardness. soapers usually use a scale of 1-10 on hardness and they use the term superfat % to decribe it. 1 out of 10 is 1% superfat and is a really hard bar that takes some effort to create a lather, 10 being 10% superfat being a very soft bar that lathers up really easily and fast. I myself make soap at 4% super fat because my recipe allows me to have a hard bar that lathers great and last around 30 showers out of one bar. I hope this helps. i messed up my first batch and made a loaf at like 15% superfats or more and it was great for washing with but only lasted like 10 showers with it.
