My dad ran away and has been missing for years now. Still affects me to this day. This song came on my spotify today and I knew it was him giving me a sign. He's out there somewhere. I haven't seen him since I was 6 years old. I'm 25 now. This song seems like it was written directly for my experience without him. Just watched the music video and realized the videos were released a couple days before my birthday. This has to mean something. Coldplay you guys will always remain one of my favorite bands. This is also applicable to fathers listening to this song who cannot be with their sons or daughters by no fault of their own. Not all fathers abandon their children, sometimes their children are taken far away from them due to spite, legal decisions or even personal reasons and the kids are made to feel abandoned by their fathers. I am there now and I miss my son so very much that I feel like he is the one singing this to me, despite my many efforts and attempts to be with him amicably.
It's so sad that, that's just one way. All of us can relate. Most of our father's abandoned us. Well It seems that way anyway. Even if It's hard for them to go, I would want the best future for my kid. I can't become a father anyway, but a man can still dream. I might have to adopt or get a donor. I can't produce children. At some point when we were lying in bed and listening to the song, he asked me what the man was singing about.
I explained to him that Chris sings from the perspective of a child. A child who rarely or never sees or knows his father.
When I explained the line "daddy it's my birthday" to him, he slowly turned away from me and said nothing more.
I asked if everything was okay, but he didn't answer. He secretly shed tears and didn't want to show them.
I really felt bad but at the same time it was so nice to see how emphatic he is.
I hugged him tightly and we cuddled in silence for a while. His little hands buried in mine. his head underneath my chin.
It's these moments that stick in your memory and that you can live on for a long time...
