I literally fired my live-in nanny after 10 days because of this character trait. She complained to my mother, my fiancé, my 3 year old’s preschool teacher, to my 8 year old, she complained about anything and everything but she never just came to ME with constructive feedback. Rather she talked behind our backs. She was so toxic yet she was actually surprised when I let her go. I was baffled since I figured she was miserable. Complainers bring down morale but they won’t ever take the initiative and quit. Cut them loose!

So sorry you had to go through that. Good riddance to the nanny.

This is simply called bad politics regardless of corporate level. Transparency is the key to expose and self destruct the cancer. This a good reminder if you're being manipulated. Thanks for the tip.

Great information, and truth! What I try to share with younger coworkers is that the whiner, is known as the whiner to everyone, and therefore when you align yourself with these whiners they stop any potential growth you may have in the company, because you are now associated with the whiner, the trouble maker.

I have become this person and I realized today, it was my expectation and nothing more. I felt like I deserved favor because of my skill set and time on the job. My inflated ego caused me to despise my leadership because I wasn’t getting what I want. I had one person I was complaining to and I apologized today. I’ve always hated gossiping and I was becoming something I hate and I was feeling it in my soul and felt like a hypocrite having a positive attitude towards them. I felt fake.😵‍💫

You are right: although they form a minority of people and you might be exposed to them only a fraction of the day, they will occupy a much larger part of your mental stamina. A life long advice and habit is to stop complaining for oneself. This frees up a lot of mental stamina and time to think about important steps like career development, strategic moves, and so on. I feel pretty bad for these people because even when you try to make them realize that they should stop complaining they will fine another way to complain.

Omg!! I became work friends with someone like that.... she complained, cried, kept pulling me into the conf rooms to tell me about how bad she was being tried.... crying because she couldn’t figure out how to perform assigned tasks to the point where she thought she would get fired.... rejected any suggestion to speak to her manager about her issues... well fast forward to now..: she has a new sounding board and now I am the “enemy”.... these people are dramatic, cowardly and full of shyt!

I've experienced something similar - a colleague I hadn't worked with much did this and because I stayed neutral (not joining in her negativity) and performed well, she turned others against me. It backfired though and the managers encouraged her to leave, which she did.

As a fresh graduate, I will enter corporate world next month and I want to ready myself for people who uses employee power to overtake new employee. What am I suppose to do if this happen? Like the bully employee may pass their workload to me? I am afraid that too much work will shutdown my body and mind, I know I always should push myself beyond my comfort zone but I dont want to get to the point that I can't handle too much pressure

Even within 18 months I've completed 3 projects, working 10h/ day for company but could not affrod this type of cancer. I decided to leave this company. Yes I'm very disappointed because my other department colleagues are very nice, but my senior who works with me, is like a Cancer.

They are indeed! I have seen several victims of these types of whiners. They tear down self confidence of excellent workers n even know how to get managers in trouble. N they are so deceptive about it too, pretending the whole time they have the good of the company in mind.

    Hey Deniz,
Love your show, but just curious what about the "devil advocate" one? In fact, I'm this type.
Usually, if a person complaint or let me know something that they unhappy about, then I would tell them to do exactly that. I'll tell them to do it instead of try to spin negatively it positively.
However, the caveat is that I do not push them to do anything. I truly believe that a worker is at their best when he/she is accepts both the good and the bad within an organization; because of course there is the bad. I hate people who resent what they doing. A majority of your life will be spend working either enjoyed it; both good and bad or get out.
Sorry getting personal, but I found doing that working for me. It is fun when seeing how people react when I tell the people who said that they would leave in a year or two to why not doing it right now.
    Manipulative, yes. Deceptive, yes.
But oh man. How that works wonder in getting in increase productivity for the organization as a whole. What your thoughts?
    Thanks,

What if the underdeveloped character and complainer, or even detractor is your manager himself/herself? Most of us have experienced being targeted at one point or another by predatory managers who indulge in being unfair to their high performers.

I have experience with dealing with a lot of complainers in my personal life. I seem to be a magnet 🧲 that attracts them. Its unfortunately sad that they don’t want to take any action against the problem, but just want to complain. This honestly drains the battery 🔋🪫of the person listening to their concerns.
