I agree, Ken... shave with what works for you. Folks can enjoy this hobby no matter which type of razor they use. Thanks for sharing the video and stay safe!
Your wife does not like the aftershave and you are both home together, not a wise move my friend:-) :-) Nice to see the old razors it brings back memories thanks, Ken.
Ken - as of 8 April 2020 been 5 days since last video. Trust you and family are safe and well. Missing your regular instalments of shaving fun. William - London
Man ... like your chanel. I'm a guy from switzerland, so not speaking native english ;-) but for me, your english is great to listen to. i like the sound of your voice and the way your are talking. I enjoy listen to you, when you are talking about things happening in the world. your videos are nearly as a daily podcast :-) i'm changing from cardrige razors now to DB saftey. My first model will arrive tomorrow (hopefully). Thanks for your content, Greetings from switzerland. And stay safe and healthy!
You're right Ken; it's not a crime just yet to go with the cartridge and especially when time is an issue. Hell, I even use an electric from time to time just to keep tidy and allow the skin to settle. Albeit not as relaxing and as efficient as D.E, just make each shave as enjoyable as possible. Cheers Ken.
I inherited my grandfather’s Reed & Barton plated razor, given to him when he was 85 in 1980. I used it daily for many years and still have it. It still polishes to a brilliant shine.
I always keep some carts handy for travel or clean up passes. By design, they can't approach the comfort or closeness of a proper DE shave, but carts travel well and are convenient when you just need a quick shave.
Even after my razor was taken from @ boot camp, my instructor sent the stores men to the exchange & he came back with a Trac II, & barbasol . The first day i could i went to the exchange I picked up some Williams soap & a $1.50 brush. They didn’t have anything but Carthage razors. That can of barbasol stayed in my buyout kit till i retired, i still have the trac II. The brush and soap could be to work in even in the Arctic, you put the soap in a ziplock & stick it in your shirt pocket, (keeps the soap warm.), spray foam can gets to -30c shaving is not fun.
I grew up w/ the Gillette Atra. I regret throwing it away many years ago. I found a Gillette Vector on eBay and bought it for just a couple of dollars. I think it was made in India. It works well (I use it primarily when I shave my head and it works very well for head shaving) but it is not as heavy as my old Atra was. I also purchased the Persona 100 pack of twin blades and they are GREAT. Shave On My Brother!!!
No thumbs down here, man! I get it, some people need the cartridge razor. That was my go to until I tried a DE, and I haven't looked back since. I was prone to razor bumps and ingrown hairs with a cartridge, so the DE life has been amazing. But everyone is different. Stay healthy Ken!
Ken electric razer I have found you can not cut yourself, but it gave me a shave burn. I use Gellitte five blade cartridge and a straight razor. The safety razer has been the best. Thank you for videos
So I finally decided to get myself a safety razor about a week ago and I just made it through my first shave where I think I finally understand how it works. I got no razor burn or cuts or anything. This is a first even when I was using cartridge razors.
Hey Ken, did you know that Trac is an acronym for Twin blade razor and cartridge, and Atra is Australian test razor? Though I am hardcore DE shaver, once in a while I toy with my 1979 Contour (a European name for Area)and a 1983 Schick Pivot. Great razors. Stay safe.
This video takes me back to the early 80’s when I was a huge Atra fan. I had the metal and the brown plastic grip handled ones for sure. My first shave was was with my brothers Gillette Trac II, so I was presentable at my older brothers wedding. I had no idea what I was doing, so my middle brother showed me how. I remember it like it was yesterday. 😂 Great nostalgic shave. Stay safe my friend.
My shaving history spans the history of the Gillette cartridge razor with a few Schicks and Wilkinson's thrown in. It started with the Trac II around 1974,, then the Atra into the Sensor. From there it was the Mach 3. Finally. after being fed up with the price of Fusion cartridges in 2015, I moved into DE shaving. I still use my Atra silver plated razor for body shaving. For some reason, it's perfect for back and shoulder shaving.
Hey Ken, great video! Don’t mind these guys who complain about videos where you use cartridge razors. I mean, come on, as long as you have a nice shave, who cares what razor you’re using? Stay safe Ken!
I think most people still use a cart occasionally, I know I do. I have the Mack 3 and Dollar shave club 6 blade (actually delivers a darn good shave) for when I'm short on time or just need a break from the DE razor routine.
I used to have one of the Gillette atra basic version you showed here as a start up razor from my father, it was easy to shave with at that time for me, unfortunately the head broked and i lost it 🙁, but definitely a care and cut free razor. Liked it, well thank you ken you reminded some old good memories with that razor.👍👍👍
Ken...just wanted to drop u a quick line to tell you i just ordered off amazon both the green porasso shave cream in the tube and the porasso red shave soap...I love both of them and man do they smell great! Not to my wife though lol she says they are way too over powering. Lol. I say oh well I'll shut the bathroom door. Lol. Anyhow ive been wanting to try porasso products for some time now just cuz ive seen these in your videos...now i know why you always say...hey..treat yourself once in a while lol...love ya buddy. Keep the great vids comin and stay safe!
It’s sold. Not to me but it’s gone, they’re a couple listings on eBay but they are a little pricey!!! I have a couple of the Gillette Sensor and Sensor Excel Razors from the 90’s the Gray Silver the Chrome and black and the Blue and Chrome Limited Edition World Cup!!! They’re great razors very efficient for what they are and you can still find the cartridges but they’re just about a $1 a piece. Not even close to the BBS I get from DE Razors and Blades for a fraction of the price.. Great video !!!! Stay safe!!!
Kensurfs $25 is good price for that razor in comparison to the other listings on eBay but $20 would’ve Been better. Stay safe, stay healthy and keep your videos coming!!!
What a coincidence Ken. I was looking at that same Atra on eBay the other day. I just bought an old Gillette brush plus shaving system and it had an Atra in the kit.
Ken have you tried the Glastonbury Shave Soap / Aftershave from Stirling? Right up your alley with a British theme. Also been enjoying watching your past videos including the Shave Den Tour plus I've started my Roger Moore marathon today. Stay safe!
Gillette Sensor Excel was my first razor. I still have the case and you can get blades. It worked better than any of the five blade razors and the only other one I tried is the new Gillette two blade cart. No cart gives me as comfortable and close of a shave as a DE and quite carts a long time ago.
Good shave Ken!!! When I fly, I carry on the same razor. One guy in Jacksonville Airport actually said "Nice classy razor". The Atra, in my eyes, shaves better than a lot of the cartridge razors out there today. Paired with a great shave stick like La Toja, Palmolive, Nivea, and TOBS, you'll get a fantastic shave on the road no doubt. I'm on the road probably 4 months out of the year, and anytime I fly, that razor is in my carry-on bag. Stay safe and have a great week!!!!
Sorry I missed your birthday, Ken. Happy belated birthday! I always like the goatee. If for some reason, you need to go out wearing a respirator type mask, you may wanna shave it because it can make the mask not seal as well, depending on how it fits your face. When I got fitted for an N95 for my job, they tested the seal and it failed because I had a beard. I've had to shave ever since!
@@kensurfs I think it's a good move. I love the goat but it's not the most mask friendly. And unfortunately, we are gonna be wearing these masks for a while. I wonder if style is gonna change now and we'll all be clean shaven like the 90's once again! It'll be great for the industry we love. No shavepocalypse!
Hi Ken. Great vid. I used to shave with a Gillette Contour Plus back in the 80s. The Atra looks very similar. They used to call the strip, 'lubra strip'.
I have a Feather FII Neo Cartridge Razor(twin blade) best cartridge razor I've ever used, very sharp blades as it's a Feather product made in Japan, still available to purchase, not sure how long it's been going. Cheers🥃
Hey Ken, enjoyed the video as always and I hope all is well in your life. I was just curious if you would ever be doing a shaving video with a straight razor? I have been thinking about getting into wetshaving and am just curious about the pros and cons of both blade styles.
Love your videos! I never liked the "duel" blade razor's, they shave fine but I always cut my jaw line and they cause irritation and ingrown hairs on me. My Dad has since my memory, and still does today at 71, use the Bic single blade throw away. The ole orange and white Bic, and barbersol in a can, GREEN label lol. Thinks something is wrong with me for using the DE safety razor and soap puck lol Love the video and your enthusiasm over the duel blade tosser!!
I have a Pils Sensor razor and the extra weight of the solid stainless steel handle makes a difference. The Atra and Sensor razors are nice razors but Gillette went too far with three blades. Nice to see a WetTuber using some classic cartridge razors. All the best!👍👍👍👍🏴
Nice video Ken.... I find the longer I de shave, the less I can use the carts, iv tried them a few times this past year but it just doesn't feel the same to me, stay safe ken👍🤓👍
found out something silly...the disposable razors from Personna (store brand) with the pivot can be chopped and popped onto the "atra" connector....yeah I'm just that bored with being laid off... at least with 250 Sensor Excel carts in stock I won't have to worry about shaving for a while lol.
Had an atra years ago till the button that releases the cartridge broke, had the sensor or one of those that came out got it for free as sample but when I went to buy new cartridges holt cow expensive so went back to disposable razors till few months ago went with double edge safety razor
The heavy handle of Excell is expensive i bought a plastic handle BUT if the guy you speak of wants a heavy handle then The Mach3 is great og it fits the Mach 3 sensitive blades as well great video as always....cheers...Peter
Great walk down memory lane with the classic astra loved the pairing with old school but still cool Aqua Velva thanks for the well wishes and the same to you and yours stay safe.
Great shave Ken. I had an Atra in the late 80's when I first started shaving. I haven't seen one of those in years. Haha. I love those vintage brushes. That cream is one of my all time favorites. Great scent and performance. I am still off work for another week here in Pa.
I still have the ribbed metal handled Atra razor that my father gave me when I turned 16 in 1979. I still have it, but the lid to the case was destroyed. I spend the extra money and buy the Gillette Atra Plus cartridges, I find that the budget blades from Personna and store brands cannot provide comfortable results.
Mr Surfs I have a question...in a video you shaved with a black gilette 7 o' clock de razor..I own a similar one though of a different colour and I was planning on buying a metal de razor...I had EJ de 89, Merkur 34c hd and Rockwell 2c in mind...now are these razors milder, similar or more aggressive than the 7 o' clock I need to know and I was also considering the 37c slant but would you recommend the 37 c slant for sensitive skin? For I saw some videos in which they said that the 37c slant gives a bbs with fewer passes....Hope this finds you in the best of health and Have a Great Day 😀
I found out that Edwin Jagger makes a "fancy" version of the Gillette Mach 3, basically the handle of the Bulbous Safety Razor, but the head of your choice of Fusion Proglide or Mach 3 for 100 CAD. It confused the hell out of me when I was shopping for a DE razor (ended up ordering a Rockwell 6C and got 100 Rockwell Blade and a Razor Bank for free off their site), like I guess if you were used to the feel of DE version and wanted a travel razor, but dropping 100 bucks on a Cart razor that you're only going to use for travel seems silly! Cool to see that you can still get the vintage style carts now for a reasonable price, good for someone who found an Atra or Sensor handle lying around in their house and is just starting to shave
Well done Ken💈 Brings back a few memories for sure. I used to have a Trac II with a gold handle, can't remember who made it🤔, maybe Gillette?. Palmolive is good stuff IMO, always a constant good lather with decent performance. Aqua Velva is old school cool😊 Thanks for the video, stay healthy👌 Enjoy!
Hey Ken, i had my 1st ever de shave last night with a merkur 23c and a astra blade. after my face was on fire!! i done 4 passes and used pre shave cream and wanted to know if you have any tips on reducing the fire on my face please. cheers, Dave from Ireland
Ken could you do a video to set things straight about corking blades? Most people don't know about it at all and to a lot of the others it seems to have a wrongful stigma attached to it like it's cheating or unmanly or something like that. I corked a new blade for the first time last night and put it in one of my shavettes and used it today when I shaved. It worked out very well. Are you thinking about posting a video of cutting your own hair like I posted about before?
Hey, Ken, nice vid! I've been watching for quite a while now & I was just curious... Could you possibly do a comparison shave with the Broman & Leaf razor? That's assuming if you still have both of course. That would be an interesting video. I've been eyeing up the pair for some time about which one I should purchase. It would be nice to get your opinion on it, thanks!
I still have my Gillette Sensor Excel with the case from the 90's. I had to electrical tape the top of the handle tho cause i used to have a bad habit hitting it on the edge of the sink to get the hairs out of the cart and i cracked it! Lolll. I've never heard of that Vector before. 😁👍🏼🪒💈
Shaved with everything Gillette from the Track II to the Fusion but my favorite cartridge razor blade by far was the Mach 3 Turbo...until I discovered wet shaving with DE blades. Love it!
Ken, very nice video. It’s very sad that I had grown a mustache for a year but with this virus, people told me to shave off the mustache. Did you like the mustache on me? I’m growing it again when this virus is gone
New comer here - Had my first safety razor shave today It was the thickest beard I've ever had, but have been worried about how poorly it went. Took way too long, and my razor just got so full of hair constantly that I'd have to take the razor apart to get hair out. Is that because of my hair? Am I not cleaning it out frequently enough? And I found it really hard to even get the angle right - any tips? Love the channel and the community seems great too, any help would be appreciated Using derby blades and a generic butterfly razor off of eBay (:
Right out the gate, Derby blades are s***. Get a sample pack of DE blades to determine which best suits your skin. Second, those cheap knock-off razors are no good. Get yourself a used Gillette Tech or Flair Tip Super Speed from eBay. Both are very mild, well built and will last beyond our lifetimes. Third, make sure you are using the slickest shave soap possible. I recommend Mitchel's Wool Fat (pricey) or Williams Mug Soap (value). Keep us informed on your progress. Gl.
@@nicetna2010 that's such useful advice, you have no idea! I'd seen a few people reccomendin Derby online, and BC Derby is close to me, I got swept over, even tho they're bloody made in Turkey
@@tjwtf28 Speed will come. After you've found your favorite blade, then get your prep, lather & technique down. It's a skill you'll have for the rest of your life. Don't give up. Stay in touch.
@@nicetna2010 to be fair, even with the sub-par set up, I took another shave again late last night, and cut the time.in half. It was just the angle I was gettin wrong! Thanks for the help, was nice just to have someone to speak through it with (:
@@MrDaloe With the Gillette Sensor only use Gillette blades, as the personna ones that claim to fit the Sensor handle break the fitting head in such a way that the Gillette Sensor refills won't fit again. This is from personal experience. The Personna Sensor refills aren't as good IMO. Hope that helps. 👍👍👍👍
@@kensurfs I know. I used to use the Harry's on my head and I've done face shaves with them as well. With proper technique and a good soap they will certainly work. Folks don't like to see them on video however:)
I was listening to a guy from Ireland, who said the bars were so post to close. Some didn’t, the government went in and confiscated all the booze and chained & padlocked the places
This video has almost my EXACT shave routine, starting in high school, and continuing throughout college, EXCEPT... 1) My badger brush was, effectively, "no name", as, when my father gave it to me, it was so old that the brand name & markings had worn off; & 2) I used the regular all-metal Atra. Otherwise... Palmolive shave cream ✔ Atra Plus cartridge baldes ✔ Aqua Velva aftershave ✔... Then, after I graduated from college, I acquired a Merkur 34C, and a Puma "PuMaster" Sölingen straight razor, and its associated appurtenances... "and the rest is history."... 💈😉💈
I just have a question not about what I'm doing, but about something horrible I used to do, something that many still do, so I put it to you: as one who talks about good shaves with good blades and good razors, would you please (and DON'T SHAVE WITH ONE OF THESE!!!!!) explain why people continue to buy knockoffs of "Good News" blades from Costco, even though some of those blades repeatedly cut a face to ribbons? This is madness. Explain. Please.
Kensurfs And that’s just what I mean. In your videos, you have shown that there are fine inexpensive blades-even cartridges for folks like my Dad who takes blood thinners-that can give a good shave without the masochism!!!

Never should've showed me that silver plated handle in the first place! hehe Also - there are some very disturbing reports coming from european neighbors, that breathing masks that were supposed to be for France and Germany that were.. "rerouted" to the USA or someone payed the tripple or quadruple price. Man I really hope that there isn't that what I think it is because we're all in the same boat on that one, aren't we?

Nice video Ken.... I find the longer I de shave, the less I can use the carts, iv tried them a few times this past year but it just doesn't feel the same to me, stay safe ken👍🤓👍
johnshaves 101 👍👍💈💈
found out something silly...the disposable razors from Personna (store brand) with the pivot can be chopped and popped onto the "atra" connector....yeah I'm just that bored with being laid off... at least with 250 Sensor Excel carts in stock I won't have to worry about shaving for a while lol.
B-MAN 👍👍💈
Had an atra years ago till the button that releases the cartridge broke, had the sensor or one of those that came out got it for free as sample but when I went to buy new cartridges holt cow expensive so went back to disposable razors till few months ago went with double edge safety razor
hoss burgess 👍👍👍💈
The heavy handle of Excell is expensive i bought a plastic handle BUT if the guy you speak of wants a heavy handle then The Mach3 is great og it fits the Mach 3 sensitive blades as well great video as always....cheers...Peter

Great walk down memory lane with the classic astra loved the pairing with old school but still cool Aqua Velva thanks for the well wishes and the same to you and yours stay safe.
Robert Justice Thanks Robert, the package arrived at my P.O. Box today. I’ll grab it tomorrow morning. Thank you👍👍💈💈
If you like classic aftershaves like brute or aqua Velva, you should try Gillette cool wave aftershave.
Mikel Connell I have used that and it’s cool👍💈
Great shave Ken. I had an Atra in the late 80's when I first started shaving. I haven't seen one of those in years. Haha. I love those vintage brushes. That cream is one of my all time favorites. Great scent and performance. I am still off work for another week here in Pa.
Mike Hazlett Stay safe. Hopefully the hot weather will help slow this down. Like when flu season ends in summer
Great vid ken, still.havey dad's handle, fyi, the atra was called the contour here in the uk
Colin G Scrowther 👍💈
Neat classic razor. The handle is the draw for sure. Cartridge is almost fool proof 👍💈

I remember the Astra, because there was always one in my parents' medicine cabinet.

I still have an Atra Plus. I think I'll have to clean it now, lol.

Cool video Ken, I usually just grab the mach 3 when I need to use something easy. Maybe I'll look into those that you showed.

For I saw some videos in which they said that the 37c slant gives a bbs with fewer passes....Hope this finds you in the best of health and Have a Great Day 😀
Dinalo Banik The first batch you mention I found similar to the 7,o’clock. The slant will be much sharper
Mr Ken. Thank You so much for your insight. Stay safe . Let's hope for better days to come.

Do only 2 passes
You might want to try a sharper blade. Some examples are Feather, Kai, Gillette Silver Blue, Gillette Platinum.
Dave Gaw I would only do 1 or 2 passes for a while till you get used to it
How do the gilette silver blue blades compare to the astra platinum? And which of them would you say is more mild? Please and thanks
zeek781 I find the Astra to be smoother
Ken could you do a video to set things straight about corking blades? Most people don't know about it at all and to a lot of the others it seems to have a wrongful stigma attached to it like it's cheating or unmanly or something like that. I corked a new blade for the first time last night and put it in one of my shavettes and used it today when I shaved. It worked out very well.
Are you thinking about posting a video of cutting your own hair like I posted about before?
pickinduck nah, I’ll wait until my regular barber is back in business
@@kensurfs That will be interesting to see also.
Hey Ken colour that goatee black

Hey, Ken, nice vid! I've been watching for quite a while now & I was just curious... Could you possibly do a comparison shave with the Broman & Leaf razor? That's assuming if you still have both of course. That would be an interesting video. I've been eyeing up the pair for some time about which one I should purchase. It would be nice to get your opinion on it, thanks!
This is such a great idea!
Crouching Domik, Hidden Merrimen I’ll try👍💈
Thanks Ken I'm here Barbus Company New Jersey
Džangista Melonne 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I still have my Gillette Sensor Excel with the case from the 90's. I had to electrical tape the top of the handle tho cause i used to have a bad habit hitting it on the edge of the sink to get the hairs out of the cart and i cracked it! Lolll. I've never heard of that Vector before. 😁👍🏼🪒💈

Does the persona cartridge fits in the gillete sensor handle ? Thank you very much for your answer :)
Yes, they are less expensive too
@@kensurfs thank you for your answer!
Where IS your shave den? Basement?
Mötley Crüe master bathroom
Shaved with everything Gillette from the Track II to the Fusion but my favorite cartridge razor blade by far was the Mach 3 Turbo...until I discovered wet shaving with DE blades. Love it!

New comer here -
Had my first safety razor shave today
It was the thickest beard I've ever had, but have been worried about how poorly it went.
Took way too long, and my razor just got so full of hair constantly that I'd have to take the razor apart to get hair out.
Is that because of my hair? Am I not cleaning it out frequently enough?
And I found it really hard to even get the angle right - any tips?
Love the channel and the community seems great too, any help would be appreciated
Using derby blades and a generic butterfly razor off of eBay (:
@@tjwtf28 Anytime buddy.

Will those persona blades fit the sensor excel?
Domenic Aloe no, not the excel
Kensurfs thanks you just saved me some money
@@MrDaloe With the Gillette Sensor only use Gillette blades, as the personna ones that claim to fit the Sensor handle break the fitting head in such a way that the Gillette Sensor refills won't fit again. This is from personal experience. The Personna Sensor refills aren't as good IMO. Hope that helps. 👍👍👍👍
ACF Nugget thanks for the info, you just saved me some money
@@MrDaloe No probs, wouldn't like to see someone break a Sensor handle like I did. The proper Sensor handles are expensive to replace.
How come you don't use a cutthroat or a straight razor?
Waldinyo my hands are too shaky
My mom gave me a Reed & Barton with my name engraved on it. Still have it.
That’s awesome 👍💈💈💈
There's nothing at all wrong with using an Atra. It's a shame you almost have to apologize at the beginning prior to using it:)
IAMCDB there is always blowback on cartridge reviews so I try to pre-empt it
@@kensurfs I know. I used to use the Harry's on my head and I've done face shaves with them as well. With proper technique and a good soap they will certainly work. Folks don't like to see them on video however:)
I'm pretty sure I'm one of those people who can't use DE razors. Every time I use one I just can't get the BBS shave like my Harry's razor gives me.

This video has almost my EXACT shave routine, starting in high school, and continuing throughout college, EXCEPT...
1) My badger brush was, effectively, "no name", as, when my father gave it to me, it was so old that the brand name & markings had worn off;
&
2) I used the regular all-metal Atra.
Otherwise...
Palmolive shave cream ✔
Atra Plus cartridge baldes ✔
Aqua Velva aftershave ✔...

Explain. Please.
Derek Leif they are probably made in China. I will be doing a shave soon with two different cartridge blades that are inexpensive
Kensurfs And that’s just what I mean. In your videos, you have shown that there are fine inexpensive blades-even cartridges for folks like my Dad who takes blood thinners-that can give a good shave without the masochism!!!

Now you wanna make me throw away my 5 blade emergency Gillette razor Ken! Never should've showed me that silver plated handle in the first place! hehe
Also - there are some very disturbing reports coming from european neighbors, that breathing masks that were supposed to be for France and Germany that were.. "rerouted" to the USA or someone payed the tripple or quadruple price.
Man I really hope that there isn't that what I think it is because we're all in the same boat on that one, aren't we?

I have cut myself many times with a cartridge razor, cartridge cuts are more painful.
