Inexpensive Cartridge Comparison in Vintage Gillette Atra Razors, are they worth it?

  • This video is for shavers who can’t always use a DE Razor or blade but who don’t want to pay $3-$6 per cartridge.
I’ll be trying out two different cartridges today, Rite Aide Renewal and Personna Plus. Both of theses cartridges fit in the Vintage Gillette Trac II and Atra and Atra Plus razors. Note- they will not fit in the Vintage Sensor Excel razor. 100 Personna blades were $15 from Amazon and quantity 10 Rite Aid Renewal I picked up off eBay for $5.
Let’s see how the two cartridges do in a side by side shave.

Why do vintage cartridge lovers always have to almost apologize for talking about them on wet shaving channels?! Honestly, it gets kinda old. If DE users look down on my enjoyment of utilizing a close, comfortable shave with a vintage Sensor handle and blade, then they must have major insecurity issues about themselves. Use what you like and NEVER apologize!! Great video, Ken!!

Cartridge razors I have used for many years as I’m of an age that that’s all there was available at the time (52 at the time of this comment) I got a close shave at the time but I always had a rash or razor bumps for many many years (office worker with a shirt collar). Then when my dad died I got his old DE razors and thought I would have a shave In his memory/honour. Wow what a difference...I’ve never looked back. I’ve watch this and many other shave channels to get the best tips (I particularly like this one kensurfs). I now own vintage fat boys, black beauties, slim and many other models as I now class it as a hobby and a little bit of zen. Please keep away from the cartridges not only for environmental issues but because they are sub quality compared to DE. Love the Channel and the wide range of product testing.

Back in 1977 I was 17 years old and for a while I'd been using one of my Dad's Gem razor. One Saturday my girl friend and I were in our local Gibson's Department store and I happened to see the new Gillett Atra, I just couldn't pass it up, that shinny metal finish and that New pivot technology I had to have it. Well we went through a lot together 18 years of marriage, vacations, even some camping trips. But one day I put the old girl in her case and moved her to the back of the drawer. I had found disposable razors, they were the new girl. But, they weren't the same. So I went looking for blades for my old girl, but their weren't any to be found, so I said a loving good bye to her and tossed her in the trash. About 3 months ago I got into old vintage razors, and today I found a 1977 Atra in the box. So I ordered her and 100 blades. When she gets home she'll go right next to my 1960 Fat Boy and that's where she'll stay.

Went to an antiques mall today and found a vintage Atra razor with case just like the silver one you used in this video for just under $10. I also ordered ten Personna cartridges for just over $6. I want to try this razor for those "quick shaves" we all need every now and then. I have been using one of my many injector razors for quickies but you still have to be careful to not go too fast with those. And this is still a "Vintage" razor. My go to razor out of all the razors I have is a 1964 gold Gillette Executive Fat Boy.

Hey Ken! The Personna blades are on Ebay as well for $14 and change and free shipping! Those Rite Aid blades are anywhere from $4-$7 obviously no shipping for a pack of ten. I have a store by me here in the Cleveland Ohio area called Discount Drug Mart. I can their brand for $1.50 for a pack of ten!! That's only 15 cents a blade!! That is completely comparable to DE blades. I use both types of razors, DE and cartridge. The cartridge blades have their purpose especially when traveling on a plane, head shaving, for people on blood thinners, etc. Thanks for this video!! I love the variety on your channel!! I could write a few pages about my experience with Atra/Trac II cartridges. I’ve been using them since 1988 or so when I got my first Atra. My main experience is that I’ve always preferred the Personna/ASR cartridges over the Atra branded ones. The Atras were always more harsh on my face than the store brands. And also the goo strips were so much more slimy on the Atras. I’d rather they not be there at all but you can’t find them without them anymore. I get mine from a local drug store chain and I believe they are Personna. Wilkinson Swords are also decent. They used to sell them at Walmart but at some point about 8 or so years ago they stopped carrying them. I’m curious as to who makes the Rite Aid version. May actually be Personna too.

My first Razor as a teen. My dad had just passed away and I had his Gillette fatboy, but never got any good with it without him there to teach me. It seemed old-fashioned anyway. I had already abandoned our old barber shop for one of the new, hip long-hair unisex shops for my feathered, Tiger Beat hairstyle, and when you're young, there's no past to be nostalgic about; it's all about the future. My mom bought me the black and chrome Trac II and along with that and my blow dryer, the 70s were in full force.

Hey Ken, I agree with some of the other viewers. Just because you use a cartridge doesn’t mean you are not a wet shaver. I’ve use many DE razors and the just didn’t work out for me. The side by side comparison shave was actually really cool. Id like if you did more like this.
In the DE realm maybe you could find 2 cheap and "neutral" razors like the tech or super speed and use those to compare razor blades. I think the side by side comparison leads to observations, insights and differences you might not pick up on otherwise.
    Thank you Ken 👍🏻

Nice comparison shave there, Ken. The main reason I started to shave with DE razors was the clogging I got with cartridge razors.
I have a heavy beard, and I actually bought a cheap toothbrush to clean the cartridges out during the shave.
When I bought my first DE razor, I never looked back. No more toothbrush!
As always, shave with what works for you. Whether you like DE or cartridge razors, enjoy the shave.

Good comparison. I still use a cartridge razor for my travel bag, not that I'm travelling currently, and went back to cartridges for a few months late last year to use up some old stock but added wet shaving techniques (brush, soap, 3 passes etc) which worked OK. I'm now back to DE shaving again as of earlier this year and sold off a lot of my cartridge stock. One of pet hates with cartridges is those slimy/gooey strips.

When I saw it was a cartridge razor shave, I almost didn’t watch. But, I figured if you could struggle through this, I could watch. I’m glad that I did. I was starting to forget how bad cartridge razor shaves are. I quit DE shaving about 30 years ago when the Astra came out. Shortly afterward, I bought one of those with the push button cleaner because I was tired of raking my finger across the blade. Well, that was a joke. The push button only partially cleared the stubble and at times whiskers would get caught in the blades and felt like I was dragging a garden rake across my face. So, I ditched that razor and bought a Sensor Excel, which I still have. Unfortunately, my Gillette Slim disappeared, so when I went back to DE shaving I bought a Micro Touch one from Wal Mart. Well that was better than cartridge but just slightly better. I had frequent nicks and razor burn. I’m guessing the blade wasn’t held tightly. Anyway, I now have a Rockwell 6S and I’m as happy as a pig in slop. It’s been a journey that wasn’t necessary. I wish I had stuck with the Gillette Slim that I bought back in 1967. But wish in one hand...

I had been buying 10 packs at Dollar General which were very good, but l can't find them anymore. Prior to that, I was able to get cheap 10 packs of good blades at Winn-Dixie down in Florida until they were discontinued. Before that Walmart used to sell Wilkinson 10 packs for about $3.75. Slick shave Ken💈💈 Throw back to another time when DE's were on the way out and the "cartridge" was the "in" thing🙄 Personally, I had a dozen of these old "new" razors, no telling how many I went through(College days). Figured out quick I didn't like them and back to the DE's for me👌 That said, I did use the Track II more than any other "cartridge" razor and would use again if I had no choice 👍 Modern soap and post shave would make a big difference, no doubt🤔 Thanks for this shave bro, might just help some folks out. Thanks for the video, always entertaining. Enjoy!

Trac II is my favorite cart of all time. It was my first “official” shave at age 14. I was a groomsman in my brothers military wedding. He didn’t want me looking “shaggy” for his wedding.
I was never a big fan of those goopy strips. I liked the original Trac II blades.

My father bought me an atra razor in 1984 when I started shaving, many razors have come and gone in that time but I still stay with the atra razor. Can't decide whether it's the fact that it's two blades as compared to 1,000 that they now have on a razor head lol or the fact that that was the razor my pops bought for me to start me off shaving.... Probably a little of both. Thanks for the great video Ken

I realised that boar brushes are the stiffest and the hardest to break in. The moment you break'em in, they start to drop hair. I have also tried the advise of some to put the boar brushes into a bug in the fridge for 24 hours. After 24 hours, I was told to rub them hard on a towel to soften them. Guess what. I lost 1/2 of the hair on the brush. The remaining ones are still hard as hell.
Synthetic brushes are still my preferred choice. No animals involved.

I used to use nothing but the Gillette Fusion 5-blade cartridge razor and every time I’d shave I’d also do the downward swipe with my thumb while running it under water. I thought maybe I was the only one. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone else do it. 😂 I’m strictly a DE shaver now though. I’ll never go back to cartridges.

Great vid Ken once again! I have posted this warning in a reply but as a warning to others. Do not use Personna blades in the Gillette Sensor handle, they break the securing tags on the handle and you won't be able to use the Sensor cartridges again, although you would still be able to use the Personna ones. IMO the Personna cartridges aren't that good compared to Gillette. 👍👍👍👍💈🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi Ken. Love your channel. So relaxing. I have to ask though, why do you refer to only safety razors as wet shaving? Cartridge razors are also wet shaving, as are straight razors. As you know term wet shaving denotes any shaving with water / not using an electrical handheld razor. Does wet shaving only mean Safety Razoring in the US or do cartridge users over there shave dry? That’s frightening if so haha :)

Sensor is my favourite, It just plows through hair like it's nothing, if I want a super close shave without a lot of "issues" I go Mach 3 Turbo ON the agains't the grain pass just around my mouth and chin. If I want a Sensor Handle new in Box.. i'll need to spend another 150+ CDN ..but love it none the less. Found out something funny though, pivoting Disposable from Personna IF you cut the tabs off will fit the Atra.....yeah I'm bored being laid off...

To be honest I’m 28 years old and ever since I started growing facial hair I always either kept a beard or a short beard. Every time it got too long I just buzzed to a short length. But I still kept my line-up nice and sharp. I probably had a few full Shaves with a cartridge razor lol. But if they work for some ppl so be it. I got into traditional we’re saving because I thought it was cool, not because I thought it was better. But doing research I have found sufficient evidence that supports The fact that it can be better for some people. One blade in contact with the skin prevent razor burn and irritation. Then there’s the Hysteresis method the cartridges use where the first blade slightly pulls the hair then the next one cuts it, so on and so forth.

I keep my trusty Trac II -- which replaced the Gillette Techmatic -- hanging in the shower with a chain drugstore blade in it. I use it only to trim the back of my neck and for areas (usually the Adam's apple) badly nicked in the previous shave. I'd never pay full freight for cartridges given this minimal use. In fact I don't change cartridges very often. But it's a great tool.
I was thinking that your father-in-law might want to borrow the Homelike razor you once shaved with, using the 0.69mm base plate. I don't have one, but it looks a lot like the Tatara Masamune. In the week since going off my blood thinner I've used an AS-D2, a Gillette Tech, and a Slim Adjustable on low settings. I've only had one or two weepers, but but they scrape a lot of skin off. I'm reaching for the aftershave balms more than I ever had to with the T.M. And these are all mild razors.

@Lee Haseley Do not use the Personna cartridges in your Sensor Excel! The Personna cartridges will break the retaining tags on the Sensor handle and you won't be able to use the Gillette cartridges again, although you will still be able to use the Personna ones. The Personna cartridges IMO aren't as good as the Gillette ones. This warning is from personal experience and as the Sensor handle is difficult to find and expensive if you do find them, it's not worth the risk! 👍👍👍👍💈

DAYLOGIC men is the current name of Rite Aid's men's grooming products. I can purchase a ten count package of twin pivoting razor cartridges for $9.99 (about $1.00 ea.) , and the will work with the Gillette Trac II or Atra handles. CVS also has their version under the name of BLADE for men with a twenty count package of twin pivoting razor cartridges for $10.99 (about $0.55 ea.) also fitting Trac II or Atra. I cannot vouch for either of the above I have only ever used genuine Gillette or the Personna cartridges. Loved the Video! How about try using Edge shaving gel in a lather bowl with a brush, it whips up a pretty nice lather, of course it works better with a cartridge razor rather than a DE razor, but it was something neat to try. Didn’t care for it off hand compared to the Gillette atra blades. Didn’t give me a good shave at all in my opinion. But could have been a bad blade... will have to give it another try with a different new persona blade. But if the 2nd one does the same I’ll just use the original Gillette’s. But I rarely use my atra. Stick with straight razors and DE blades. Local grocery store has 10 packs of personas for the atra for 3$! A pack of 10 Gillette’s costs 20$!!!! Ridiculous.
