    In all fairness to the Snowball, the original model used a USB to USB-B cable (the kind used for printers) so having a mini-usb is an upgrade.

      @HighKoalaTeaProductions ปีที่แล้ว +6

      thats the model I had when I first started youtube and recordings lol. If I would have had the micro USB one at least i wouldnt have had to make a special trip for a new cable when I lost the original... Now I use a Shure SM57 with a Behringer Uphoria interface, nice upgrade.

    • @happykittenmeow
      @happykittenmeow ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah that's the one I have. The port for it on the ball is also cursed - you can plug the cable in upside down for absolutely no reason. I very nearly returned mine because it wasn't working and it hadn't ever occurred to me that someone would implement that type of port that way.
      I only figured it out because there was a faq on the blue website that mentioned it.

    I've had that Samson mic for years now ever since I built my first PC. I've upgraded every single part since then except for that mic, it works great for all I need. I've even added a nice esk mounted mic arm (again from samson, which is also amazing for the price) and a cheap pop filter from amazon. Unless I for some reason need a different mic or this one breaks, I don't plan on upgrading because it does all I need it to with simply plugging it in and putting it on a mic arm (for anyone that has it, you can take the feet off if you mount it to an arm so they don't get in the way with a screw on the bottom of it) and running it through nvidia broadcast for noise reduction (because I basically always have a fan and random noises in the background). I highly recommend it if anyone needs just a nice solid mic for cheap.

Mine sounded as you'd expect, but my friend sounded like he was recording using his phone. The issue turned out to be the microphone distance. I had mine on a mic arm, and he had his 10 feet away from him behind his mouse and. keyboard. I believe it's most important how you use the mic, over which mic it is that you use.

    What I tend to recommend for a "cheap" microphone is the Samson Q2U. It's insanely versatile! It's a handheld dynamic mic with a little stand so you can use it at your desk or... in your hand. It's got both USB *and* XLR outputs, so you can use it right out of the box through USB and keep using it if you decide to upgrade to an interface setup. Through USB, you can use the headphone port on the back for monitoring. Being a dynamic mic, it naturally has some rejection of room noise, so it's more friendly for use in any old space. I've seen the price float from $50 to $70 U.S. All in all, it's a great value and a great starting point.

    The Meteor was my first condenser. It got kidnapped by my brother who streams as a hobby and has been going strong for good half a decade now. It is solid little chrome b-plug with good sound and excellent documentation showing off its pedigree as being made by an established recording equipment company. Unlike brands like Blue that mostly just get by by name.
    Though it has been aging a bit recently if not obvious by it still using a Mini-USB which has practically been deprecated for quite a while.

    Re: the manuals. I think the difference is Samson is a legit audio company specialising in live audio that's been around ages. It's just that little bit of polish understanding that their mics are going to be used for home recording vocals and instruments and need to setup a bit differently depending on the instrument as well. It's absolutely amazing the quality you can get for home recording and with such simplicity.
    Though I do think it's hard to go past 2nd hand sm57/sm58 + cheap desk(careful of fakes floating around though) as an all rounder setup. Legit tanks. Got lucky personally about 3 years ago that a local studio was closing down and I had known the owner for almost 20 years that he gave me an EV RE20 (best vocal mic I've heard), 3 x Sm57, 2xSm58's for $500AUD.

    i bought a used Samson Meteor (used) based on this video.
    Overall i'm quite satisfied by it. However, a few thing are quite... nerve racking.
    It's not the mic itself, but the jack for a headphone.
    On the one hand, i really like being able to control the sound with the wheel. But on the other hand, i'm experiencing intrusive phenomenons.
    the first thing i noticed is sound leak. i can see it on Discord after a few sec when i haven't spoken. as if the mic was looking for sound. when the headphones are directly plugged in the laptop, this doesn't happen. i test with open back, closed back and earphones, same phenomenon.
    the second thing is interference, like with an old radio. my phone "disturbs" the flow around the mic and headphones. same things about open/closed/ear, and when plugged directly, the interference disappears....
    idk if it's my mic specifically, a tough luck with buying second hand, but here's my take nonetheless.

      I got a pair of SHP9500, and they freaking amazing. Not only in sound, but they are super comfortable. Which makes sense, they are the highest rated for comfort on Rtings (tied with a few others). I never would have thought I would buy open backs, but here I am, and I love em. They’re pretty reasonably priced, the frequency response graph is almost identical to the HD600 by ol’ mate senny. But they’re less than a 1/3 of the price at $75usd. And you don’t need any extra kit to use them, they can be run right out of your phone. Anyway, free marketing aside. Same, I always have liked music, but never really got in to the audiophile side of things. Before watching him, my go to were wired skullcandy crushers. I gotta say though, those crushers were really comfortable. Not as good as the SHPs but still in the number two spot.
      Edit: I’ve got the ZSN Pro x too, they’re awesome. I’ve always had a hard time with earbuds, as everything falls out. But apparently I just have small ear canals. So with the smallest bud bits, I still have a spot where it pushes on the cartilage a bit. But they’re still wearable, and get better when I use them for a few days in a row. I really like their sound signature. They’re great for road trips.

    I don't think you could go wrong with Samson products. I've owned a few over the years and all of them have impressed me lots. I've heard the same from other people too. I had a Q2U which is an awesome mic to have, and it can do everything. Take a little jump up and you could get the G-Track Pro which is a chonker but it's also a great mic. Really just depends on what you need them for! Even their accessories like shock mounts, boom arms and pop filters worked well for me while I had them. And their headphones are really good as well. I had the SR850's until I started using closed backs but they sounded absolutely fantastic considering what they cost me. Definitely recommend Samson anything!

    If you have a little extra the reviews for the wave 1 or wave 3 are really good. The mic with (comes with small stand) is 100 for the wave 1, and 150 for the wave 3. And you can get a full bundle that includes
    Boom arm, pop filter, cable, mic, and shock mount. All that is 270. And their software is said to be VERY good.

  • @firalia
    @firalia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, the Snowball is in that place where you might as well just go up a bit and get all the extra features.
    Personally, I've got a RODE NT-USB mic. Got it for around $170 AUD from JB Hi-Fi about 3 years ago now. It's a really good, high quality mic. Comes with a pop filter, carry case, and it's got output to headphones, as well as volume mix between voice and the sound from your PC. It's got a small removable desk stand, but can be mounted to a proper stand as well.
    It's a really great all-rounder mic. Used to use it for YT videos, a bit of voice over, and voice calls. Nowadays, it mostly gets used for class video/music projects. It's got a bit of that USB static, but you really have to listen for it most of the time. Very portable if you have to take it anywhere. Way better than the Yeti imo, which is around the same price range.

    I've seen the Samson mic at Best Buy, and figured it was cheap garbage. Thanks to this video, I now know that isn't the case! I've been wanting a low profile mix. A friend of mine suggested the Blue Snowball, but I think it's too big and kind of ugly.
    Also, really happy to see it comes with HOW to use it because I'm inept at audio lol

    When I was shopping entry budget mics, all of these options were in my list, but in the end I still got the Blue Snowball for one primary reason (outside good audio quality), it was on sale for the same cost of the Samson so in short, for normal prices the other options are better value for the money, but if the Blue is on sale then the Blue is worth it without a doubt for it's superior audio quality, got me a pop filter for the price difference, money well spent. Love the content mate, keep it up.
