  • Still The Best Gaming And Productivity Laptop 2021? - Asus Zephyrus Duo 15 SE
    This is my detailed review on the Asus Zephyrus Duo 15 SE after owning the laptop for just over 2 months. I've been daily driving this since the end of April and it's replaced my 10 year old system. I've enjoyed using it thus far and I wanted to share my thoughts on pretty much every aspect of the laptop and whether I feel it's a worthy replacement for a desktop.
    This laptop is packing a lot of hardware, including an RTX 3080, a Ryzen 5900HX, which is an 8 core/16 thread animal, 32GB of RAM, 2 1TB NVME SSDs, a 4K IPS Main Display, a smaller screenpad+ and a bunch more. Have a look at the timestamps below and feel free to skip around to whichever section piques your interest.
    It is a long video and it took me a while to film and edit. I appreciate any feedback and I'm open to ideas on how I can improve my content. If you didn't like any aspect of the video, please comment below and I'll endeavour to improve. Any hateful and negative comments will be removed unless they're valid criticisms.

    Seriously considering either this or just the M16. While screen pad plus is an impressive addition, even as a content creator, do you think its necessary? Given with the price of the laptop, one can actually buy 2 single screened laptops with comparable components. That said, I am excited to see where Asus Flo goes. That is a truly versatile design.

      Hi Bruce, after owning it for over 2 months the only use it really gets is for monitoring things and audio editing (audacity). The video editing software I use isn't supported by the screenpad+ so I don't get any useful shortcuts. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I totally disagree with the trackpad. It's the most responsive and very useful like any regular trackpad. I run this laptop as a music production hub and I have patched software modular cables just with the trackpad. It's very easy to control VST parameters. It's a matter of getting used to. You got to use it before you junk it.
    Also, use the MyASUS to keep your battery charge to a max of 60% to increase your overall battery health and minimize wear levels.

    • @ManchesterTechGuy
      @ManchesterTechGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, some good points there. My main problem with the trackpad is the location. It functions fine as a trackpad though, being honest. I will do the battery thing you mentioned, thank you

      @@ManchesterTechGuy I was surprised with your poor battery life. Maybe a difference in screen properties? Mine has the RTX 3080 but it's got a FHD300Hz screen and a 1920x550 second screen. With panel power saver and the second screen turned off, on iGPU mode it's competitive with my g14 which was totally unexpected. I have also heard that the newer WQHD+ MiniLED screen has lower battery life, so it may be a mix of resolution and refresh rate.
      The newest models are more diverse than ever, Asus is really doubling down on these models! A 14, 14 Pro, 15 Pro, 15 SE and the new 16 that replaces it. Maybe these will be replaced by some folding screen design or something, but they have been most enjoyable!

    Great content and review.
    Can I offer some friendly optional feedback to your already improving videos? I would explore improving your narration/oration skills. You're very clear and easy to understand, but your intonation and consistent ending of a sentence in a monotone / upward inflection conveys less confidence in your delivery. Ending statements with a grounding downturn in tone with help your delivery land with more punch and conviction. By all means, I'd prefer your voice over the overly enthusiastic and exaggerated intonation of over content creators - I just thought this might help ☺
    Just my 2cents - all good if you disagree 👍 Hope this helps

      In America the cheapest dual screen is the Zenbook 14 which can be had for as little as $850usd or so. Among more expensive models the ones with a 4K lower screen are premium. It makes the lower screen so much more useful. There are web browsers and browser extensions that can keep updating pages for you, people used to use them for Ebay and such all the time. You would need to follow a tutorial but you can also put your phone screen on the bottom or actually install touch-based Android apps and use them on the lower screen. With their included software I connect my phone to the USB and use it as a third computer screen sometimes, this also works with Android tablets.

      At 6400rpm they are quite loud, but not whiny. It's more of a whoosh. Hard to tell through the video, but you'd be better off with earphones or a headset to properly enjoy the game. Wow that battery life is kind of a deal breaker for me. Is there any way to increase it? I don't like the lights on the keyboard keys, so can those be turned off? And if so, would that extend battery life? Also, hows the battery life if you turn off the second screen?

    • @ManchesterTechGuy
      @ManchesterTechGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use it in igpu mode when you're not gaming and you don't have other monitors connected. That'll give you about 4 hours. The keyboard lighting off doesn't make a massive difference tbh as the main screen is where you lose the majority of the battery life. The second screen off doesn't add much time to the battery life unfortunately.

      I might end up with a desktop in a few years after gpu prices have settled.

      I'm on the opposite side of your situation -- I have a desktop with a 3080, but I'm looking for a good laptop for a little portability with good power. I'm currently deciding between this and the Zephyrus S17 2021. The dual screen is the aspect that draws me to this laptop.
      Also, coming from a desktop, it's really hard to justify the price for any gaming laptop (this would be the first that I own). The 1080p version of this laptop is currently $3500 pre-tax, and I built my desktop for less than that. But that's the price for portability.

I paid barely over $2K for a Pro Duo 15 with an i7, 16GB of _soldered non-replaceable_ memory, and a low wattage RTX 3070 similar to the one in the g15. The Pro Duo has an 4K HDR OLED, which at the price made it very appealing for graphical work. Now I have two dual-screen laptops. I have had fine luck with Wacom Bamboo Ink...Plus? The rechargeable one. And the Surface Pen Pro or Slim or whatever rechargeable. Not sure about the Raphael, it depends what pen protocols are supported. You can set the keyboard any way you like. For "stealth" you can turn the lights off completely or set a very inoffensive white or pastel tone. You can also have it report heat levels via keyboard color, fiddle with other settings. You can not disable or change the red power light (I think) and you cannot change the color of the backlit number pad.
      It is a very subtle and professional looking gaming laptop and I have even turned off the upper screen to use as a paper holder while typing on the lower screen. Like an old electronic type writer! The new 16 inch model has some purple-ish inset color on the lid if you dislike that. You may want a Pro Duo instead, they are often *cheaper* than the Zephyrus Duo. They have Intel CPUs, plain white backlit keys, Thunderbolt ports and a range of configurations. The lid of my Pro Duo is dark blue finished brushed metal with a plain metal Asus logo.

Hugely improved lower screen if it can do 100% aRGB and DCI-P3. But yeah you cannot go higher on RAM and it seems incredibly difficult to find the 3050 Ti model at a normal price....the $2K model is using Iris Xe graphics only. So it should support OpenCL acceleration but not CUDA or other Nvidia-specific accelerators.
      The Pro Duo 15 can be had for about $2.8K, with....on amazon I see either an 11900H 32GB with a 3080, or the Intel 12th Gen plus 32GB and a....3060 it says. Not sure if either has an improved lower screen compared to my 2021 UX582 with 10th-gen Intel and 3070.
      Unless you do some really amazing levels of compositing, 32GB of system memory is probably enough. If you are at all concerned about that, do not buy a 16GB model. Although since the Duo 16 is upgradeable, it can take up to 64GB memory and two SSDs. Downside is poorer lower panel and upper panel doesn't accept a stylus. Seems there is not yet a perfect compact dual-screen with memory that you can replace. I'm just glad there's more than one good option, a little choice in the market.

      For best performance and compatibility in games, set the external monitor as your primary screen when connected. That will solve a lot of unexpected behaviors. Do not mirror it, or you can even switch to "external display only". Also if your laptop has more than one way to connect video (HDMI, Displayport, USB-C which is Displayport Alt) you should find out if any of them connect directly to your gaming GPU. I have several laptops where one port is on the iGPU so that the laptop can get better battery life hooked up to a projector, and then a second port goes to the gaming card for better and more reliable performance. The direct link can give you more frames per second and display each frame slightly sooner.

      AMD laptops work perfectly well with USB-C docks. Thunderbolt is most useful for specialized parts such as external GPUs, specialized media capture cards, and high-bandwidth all-in-one TB docks that can cost over $500usd. The USB-C port supports up to 10Gbit data and Displayport 1.4 which is good enough for 4K HDR video. TB4 supports 40Gbit (5GB) data for high bandwidth multimedia.
      Asus now also has the XG Mobile which is only for the Flow x13 laptops and x13 tablets right now. It is a full 64Gbit PCIe3, 8 lanes direct link. Intended for external GPU and docking functionality, it does not support external media capture cards at this time.
