Land Rover Freelander 2 / LR2 Suspension Lift Part 3 - Removing Rear Strut & Fitting Spacer

- In this the 3rd and final part of our Freelander 2 suspension lift video series we tackle the rear suspension. This turns out to be more difficult than the front suspension lift as you need to remove the entire front strut from the car !
You need a set of hubcentric wheel spacers. 👍
Sadly, after powdercoating and fitting Evoque alloys, I ordered standard size 235/65/18 A/T tyres that looked completely lost in the arches. An expensive mistake. What a div ! I then had 265/60/18's fitted which not only fill the arches, but add a little more height too.
Top tip. The chisel at the back of the hub means you don't need to smash the crap out of the hub which could damage it beyond repair. Also the chisel needs to stay in situ , making it easier to replace the shock.
Great video again, Simon and Tyler.
Would love to see a video on how the lift has affected handling.
The rear lift in particular looks a LOT of hard work and although higher clearance is definitely desirable I’m nervous about impact on road handling.
Thanks for great videos. I also think it’s great you are collaborating with Beavis Pitt’s.
Use the spring to help you undo and do up the strut top.
When undoing if you clamp it just enough to hold the spring in place when it’s undoing and the tension from the spring will keep the piston from spinning.
When doing up if you just put the nut on a few threads and release the clamp again the spring tension will keep it from spinning
Well done Tyler for doing some of the video solo. Think Simons training is paying off!!
Yes I am keen to get Tyler infront of the camera more... and contributing more - we need to get the double mic's set up really as often we cannot hear Tylers contribution.
I will try and get more of the team infront of the Camera...those that want to...
@@L663 can’t remember what’s present on the standard Freelander 2 but a good front recovery point is something else that could be looked at 😀
@@paulkedwards Looking at this right now ! the recovery point is OK but it needs a better sump guard that exposes it etc.
This is something I’ve been looking at doing with my Freelander 2. How has the increase in height affected the handling characteristics of the car? I know it’s no sports car but would be interesting to know
Nice - the little rover is standing tall now. Just needs some really big tires next!
A up really like your videos just looking at the Liftkit can't you make them like wheel spaces so you don't have to use a Spring compressor
the ladders are very important :) thanks for remembering and before anyone says "why do you need a ladder on a freelander" well i dont, just like i dont need a spoiler but it looks cool!!
Any plans to do a wireless charger for the Freelander 2? Compartment in front of the gear stick may work? Wiring under the console into the hidden area under the sliding storage compartment
Hi quick question. After the lift could you fit bigger rubber and if so how big without having to chop and hammer to avoid rubbing. Thanks in advance
How long did it take you to do in total?
Great work. Thank you
Our pleasure!
Great intructional video, lads, although whacking that casting directly with the lump hammer was pretty brutal. A block of wood between might have been a bit more civilised, eh?
Yes a few people have pulled me up on this...on reflection it was a little savage !
Hmm, why would there be so much more lift at the rear of the car, and why would the same size spacer change weight distribution so much if in deep this is what has occurred. Might this be now more prone to diving under hard breaking or are the springs now under greater tension. Can’t wait for the follow up vid on this one, plus some analysis of wheel/ tyre options now Available to you. Keep up the good work fellas.
Hi 🙋♂️ very nice 👍 good 😌 work.
Thanks 🙏 👌
Looks good, gives me something to think about. About how long did it take you both to fit the front and back? Thanks
Excellent job. Well done guys very informative video. Lump hammer straight onto the hub casting is a bit more neanderthal than whacking out bolts that you're not going to use again.......IMHO 😬
Yes - I think I agree on reflection !
where can i buy this kit ?
At 16:34 you could gain a inch and a half by just dropping the pinch clamp down and re tightening it again
This is vary interesting project. I have 2015 LR2 and I have been thinking to lift it up, but I am still not very sure about Spacer lift kit. Also I cannot find Suspension Lift on the market. Is Spacer lift kit good for long team drive(is it going to damage the car in the future? ) and go off road ? I am just concern that might damage the car somehow.
Hi Adam - so far i have not had any issues with the car after fitting these spacers. There will however be changes to the strain placed on some components and some changes to the handling but for me it seems to be a good compromise.
Will it have to have a 4 wheel alignment done to it, as I have been informed you need to this when lifting 4x4 as it can change the camber..
Yes it would be interesting to see how this has changed.
Why not clamp the spring in place then you don't need to undo the two trailing arms, its one of the worst jobs to do but that makes it a lot easier.
Is there a video on how to get access to the EGR on a freelander 2 ?
No we have not needed to do this yet !
@@L663 would be very helpful. my freelander 2 keeps on throwing EGR codes every May then going away for the rest of the year. Would like to know how to get to the sensor.
Any chance of some of these for coil sprung LR3's?
Tyler just flicking the bird to everyone who has watched this!
It should be Tyler's new company car 👍
Simon should use his vast collection of landrovers as company cars for all his staff lol
@@justinsmith6296 Well said Sir
Nice vid! Loads of help thanks. PS Keep the jokes coming 🤣
i know this sounds mad but does anyone make the longer struts instead of the spacers?? do you know.
Not mad - i had the same idea and was thinking of getting some made
@@L663 was trying to find these ones you used but couldn’t find them.
Found MUDDY mods ones but there a bit expensive I could get a full sent of shocks and springs for my D1 for same price lol 😂
a snorkle would look good on that too
I cringed watching you hit a casting with a metal bolster hammer. As an alternate option, why not invest in a hide mallet or use a piece of wood and hit that with the bolster. I’d hate to see the casting break … just a suggestion.
Hi - as Ian suggested using the chisel may have resulted in less hammering...
A Thor copper hammer is a worthwhile investment. They have a bit more grunt than the hide but still don't damage the steel.
🙏🙏
Wow congratulations on being 1st ! 🎈🎆
easier to go larger tyres
Good point..
