Well I'm not long back from Glasgow and Wemyss Bay, and tonight I was searching for your video with your memorable comment on the freezing point of the river Kelvin. Failed! But what a a consolation! Its a pilgrimage, and the soundtrack is atmospheric. I loved it all a over again. With all due respect to the bloke who does the to camera pieces, I didn't miss him . The back room staff more than made up for it. More like this please. Colin
@@colinriley123 ah, interesting take on watching an old one. Maybe i should throw in some that are more like this, without the taking into the camera stuff. Nice thoughts Colin. Much appreciated. A lovely video close to my home. You have really caught the grandeur of Glasgow Central and the beauty of Wemyss Bay stations! I remember standing in the Central concourse and looking up at the windows which displayed the ever changing train departures. It added to the excitement for a young boy travelling on what were then steam trains. The destination every Glasgow Fair Fortnight (the last two weeks in July) for working class families were resorts such as Dunoon, Millport and Rothesay. Many also travelled by steamers which sailed down the River Clyde from the nearby Broomielaw Quay. The journey was known as going 'Doon the Waater'. Wemyss Bay station was particularly busy. The advent of package holidays saw the demise of many of these popular resorts. (There are also two Low-Level platforms at Central serving suburban routes).
Thanks so much for the kind words on what was really one of my first attempts at this kind of thing! And what great memories too. I would loved to have seen the destination windows in operation. It was easy to imagine (if only from the size of that gents toilet) how busy Wemyss Bay must have been back in the day. Both stations truly are magnificent places. I'm so pleased they have been preserved. Thanks for watching another 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravels A bit of a weird subject has been raised but a little extra: Google ‘Rothesay Toilets’ - I think Tripadvisor will be the first in the list and some remarkable photos of the Victorian Gents Conveniencies will be revealed.
Just re-watching everything on these dark winter nights when travelling about loses its appeal. We had 8 days on a Freedom of Scotland pass a few months after you filmed this one and missed out on Wemyss Bay, the intention was to go to Oban but a reduced timetable scuppered that and we only got to Helensburgh. The rest of the trip was based around Edinburgh/Inverness/Aberdeen so another trip is on the cards. Miss your dulcet tones on this one.
@@kevinellis8869 haha, a very early one indeed! I was just learning how to do this kind of thing at the time. Wemyss Bay (and the Bute ferry) are definitely something worth doing. The station bar was a lovely haven on such a cold and windy day! Thanks for the re-watch! 👍
Really enjoyed this, thank you for a friendly and informative piece. My husband and I will be making this journey in a couple of weeks so hope the weather is less nippy! Thanks again 😀
Thanks so much for the lovely comment. I’m new to this, so any encouragement is very welcome. Have a lovely trip to Wemyss Bay and enjoy a drink at the bar!
Bad weather in Glasgow. Discovered to my astonishment that trains in Scotland are running. So took the train to Wemyss Bay. After a chilly ride on a 320,arrived and entered the Bar. Bliss!
The video does full justice to both stations. A joy to watch. Catching up on your videos I am beginning to think I need to alter my priorities. On the day i did this trip I went on to Bute, and Mount Stuart. No visit to the bar at Wemyss. Careless!
Great video Johnny. Brings back recent memories. We fulfilled an ambition by going to Wemyss Bay earlier this year - well worth the trip. The station bar and cafe were very busy so we went for a walk and found McCaskie's cafe across the road. Some of the best fish and chips we have had for a long time.
Yes, I’ve heard good reports of McCaskie’s too. It was a desperately cold day in February for my trip, so I didn’t have to worry about the pub being too busy. It was very cozy indeed. For its size, I think Wemyss Bay is one of the most awe inspiring stations I’ve ever been to! Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
Now I am curious what are the other 5-Star Stations. But I would have guessed that the oval M&S was a completely new addition. The use of the upper floor windows make me wonder if that was typical of the time, or were there various methods of displaying departure times.
Wrt M&S, you may be right. I'm not sure. Wrt departure boards in windows: I would guess other stations have done the same round the world. However my first thought is most would use some kind of painted wooden board slid into an array. Wrt 100 best: i have a playlist of the ones I've visited. Although one commenter did point out it should be my top 100 and not someone else's so maybe I'll stretch the definition a bit in the future! th-cam.com/play/PLXk1cIVnitGbpEuv6LC9-TyxEkmuhmtQ0.html

Thank you. One of the themes of my train vids will be station architecture, so please subscribe to see more! J

What memories are these? Family holidays to Bute?
A school trip via Wemyss Bay station to Rothesay I clearly remember walking down the curved walkway to the ferry and that was probably 65 years ago

yes, it really is fantastic. And, if the weather is a bit better, then also picking up the ferry here is great too. 👍
