Between 1944 and 1950 Como starred in his own NBC radio show, The Chesterfield Supper Club, which from 1948 was also televised. By this time Como was one of the most popular singers in the country. The Perry Como Show, a 15-minute variety show, began appearing three times a week on CBS in 1950. This was a major hit for Perry Como in 1973, hE was about 60 years old. Many years ago in his early 80's he did an Irish Show in Ireland, for PBS, and in the middle he sang this song. His voice was old and faltering, but when he belted out the middle part ["And yes I know how lonely life can be..."] in full voice, the crowd went nuts, cheers and applause, some with tears in their eyes including mine at home. Mom loved his voice. For a brief moment, the young Perry Como was back. It was very moving.
My father was a singer with Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and Ralph Flanagan Orchestra, and he filled in for Perry Como to host a radio show called the Chesterfield Show. To thank my dad, Perry Como gave him a gold cigarette lighter. still have that lighter and the note he sent with it.
@@aks4204 no, I wasn’t born at that time. He was married to his first wife at that time. But my half sister remembers those days very well. They were living in New York City, and she remembers Tommy Dorsey coming to their apartment.
Perry Como had the most number one hits of any recording artist in recording history! Thankyou, it's about time someone is playing his music especially for the young people who have never heard of him before. This is a Don McClean's song that Perry Como covered and was number one in the UK charts from 1973 -1975 and hit number one here in the United States too. Elvis Presley also recorded "And I Love You So" because he was a very good friend of Perry Como and he admired his music a lot. Perry Como and Elvis Presley both played Las Vegas sometimes at the same time in the early 70s and Elvis would sometimes go watch Perry perform his show when he wasn't on stage himself. Elvis also covered and recorded "It's Impossible" another number one Perry Como song. Elvis Presley loved Perry Como as did everybody back in the day.
Perry Como was my first favorite singer. I wasn't even in grade school yet but he sang a song called "catch a falling star and put it in your pocket" and being a little kid I had never heard that you could catch a falling star so I loved it!
Beautiful song written by the great Don McLean. I used to play this song for weddings, back in the day. Try Don’s version. Much better, IMO. Thanks for another great reaction. Keep up the good work! 👊🎶❤
P.S. SCTV used to do a skit about Perry being so relaxed that the guy playing him would just be lying on stage with a microphone by his mouth to sing into. Too funny.
My absolute favorite of his (my top 10 romantic love songs of every genre) is entitled, "It's Impossible." The melody was written by a Mexican born composer who was honored in the US Latin Composers Hall of Fame back in the day and my lyrics in English were written by a composer who was famous for writing a number of songs for Elvis.🔥 Perry Como has a uniquely smooth voice and is an early crooner legend. ❤ Other "crooners" are Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Bing Crosby....
"And I Love You So" is a popular song written by folk singer and guitarist Don McLean and released on his 1970 debut album, Tapestry. Many performers have done covers of this song. Perry Como's version was one of the more popular of the covers.

Ah Asia, not sure where the term "Crooner" came from but it does go back to the 20's, 30's. 40's and 50's. Asia's description, swooner, sounds about right from singers like: Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Bob Eberly, Howard Keel, Rudy Vallee, and into the 60's when Andy Williams came on the scene.
No too bad for a guy who was a barber. I loved watching him as a young girl. So dreamy. "Crooner is a term used to describe primarily male singers who performed using a smooth style made possible by better microphones which picked up quieter sounds and a wider range of frequencies, allowing the singer to access a more dynamic range and perform in a more intimate manner."
Como always kept his barber's license current. His philosophy was that he never knew when his singing career might fall apart and he wanted a backup plan for that event.
Crooning is a laid-back relaxed vocal style, usually baritone for men, really big before the 60's. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Gotta do some Bing Crosby BJ! He was the #1 singer of the 30's and 40's. Try 'Swinging On a Star'. This will further your already formidable music education.

Crosby was the first major singer to understand just how significantly the improved microphone changed the entire possibilities in using the voice to communicate to the audience. You no longer had to stand back and shout at the mic in order to be heard, or to record. In their defense, the shouters were just doing what singers had had to do for thousands of years pre-technology, so it came naturally to them to carry that style over in the teens and twenties. Crosby dropped the volume, got closer to the mic with a more intimate style, and crooning was born.
