IBM XT 5160 10MB Hard Drive Kickstart

  • I was at a garage sale and someone was selling an IBM XT that was sitting in their basement since President Reagan was still in office.
    The power supply was dead so I'm going to try to retrofit a newer ATX PSU to see if I can get it to boot up. The CGA monitor seems to light up so there's hope. I think it would be cool just to see the boot screen.
    In the meanwhile, I wanted to hear the hard drive spin just for nostalgia reasons so this is the result. Enjoy.
    Here's a follow-up video where I measure the amperage while starting it up: • IBM XT 5160 10MB Hard ...

    can we talk about how the hard drive has an air filter

    • @nara1280128
      @nara1280128 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      every spinning hard drive has air filter and goes out through hole, the original purpose to manage air pressure inside hard drive
      and other cases if hard drive exposed and dust falling in, air filter will trap dust in there

    • @vanskis7618
      @vanskis7618 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      something was living in it and immediately died and vaporized once he opened the drive

    • @azyfloof
      @azyfloof 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The filter traps any small particulates that might be left on the drive platters after manufacture. Even modern magnetic hard drives have them, they're just a lot smaller 😊

    • @mima85
      @mima85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Air is needed so that a thin air cushion can develop itself between the heads and the platters when they're spinning at full speed. Is that air cushion that prevents the heads touching the platters while the drive is running, making the heads literally flying over the platters' surfaces.
      An internal air filter is needed to keep the atmosphere inside the disk's chamber as clean as possible, and on a lot of drives you can see a very little hole on the cover to allow the internal air pressure to equalize itself to the external environment's one.
      Hard drives aren't under vacuum, this is a common misconception, and the fact that they need air to work is one of the reasons for which hard drives can't be used in satellites, space probes, etc.

    I think it would be fascinating to take a platter like this that's rated for 10 MB and see how much data you can actually put onto it using modern methods. (Of course it would take someone very skilled and knowledgeable about hard drives LOL)

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not rated for 10MB, it's probably a 5MB platter with 2.5MB per side, but that is with the MFM format. RLL would give you 50% increase in storage to 15MB.
      Modern encoding probably wouldn't work with the thickness of the disk and with the coercivity of the material.

    That spindle bearing is very much out of oil. There's a dropper on the bottom of the drive to add some
    Drive is probably fine despite being open - Should be no problem for a disk of this type and age. What will kill it is the head crash you can hear.

    Out of curiosity, what is the brand of the hard drive? It doesn't look like a Seagate ST-412, nor any of the full height 10MB MiniScribe or CMI offerings included in the PC-XT.

      It's an International Memories Inc. model 5012H. I guess it has the same geometry as an ST-412 so it's essentially a clone of the ST-412.
