I often *feel* like a beginner player, and wonder why the #*&% I'm in Tier 1. ...One more reason I like the instructive and informative nature of your videos. :)
My first Heavy Mech was the JagerMech JM6-S. I loved the high mounted arms with two ballistic hard-points in each arm. Unfortunately, it is quite fragile because it has large side torsos and you need an XL engine to get the most out of it.
I kind of hung around the beginning area for a while earning enough money to travel and look for a decent mech. Saved enough and travelled northwest to the top of the Steiner region and luckily came across a Thunderbolt. Plenty of armor on it and after sticking a few burst lasers and medium lasers on it I found I could go toe to toe with a lot of enemy mechs on my own. An srm6 is a great punch in the face for them too.
Marauder 4life. I did myself a favor and replaced the AC5 with an RAC2, gave it double heat sinks, ferro-fibrous armor, added three non-engine double heat sinks, three tons of ammo, and there it is. Keeps the PPCs and boosts heat management drastically. Generally speaking, heavy mechs are the BEST mechs. They offer the punch of an assault mech with often surprising speed for their size, and can be used in a wide variety of roles. You can't go wrong with one.
Dude, thanks for these videos. I just really got into the game about 2 weeks ago. Thanks to your advice, I’m getting better faster. I used the Marauder, Urbie, and Shadowhawk builds to start. Love em.
Hellbringer has been a consistent pick as versatile beginner-friendly suggestion. While for the most part I agree, I've always been of two minds about ECM Mechs for new players. On one hand, they help mitigate positional mistakes, on the other it sometimes seems that they pose the danger of reinforcing bad positioning habits. Still, good video overall. Nicely detailed and informative.
I tried the Quickdraw build. Unfortunately, 2 MRM 40 with that engine seems not to work anymore. So I am playing it as 2xMRM30 and it is so good to play. The Damage output is still high, and the ammo last a little bit longer. Had some good matches with 700 damage and a good match score. Thanks for this tutorial! Was very helpful.
Great videos ttb. I have watched all the beginners guide to class videos. The only thing I think they need is some time stamps in the descriptions, I am always coming back to look at builds and some times it takes a while to dig through the clips to find the right spot.
I would also remove the arm actuators on the hellbringer if you don't have weapons in the arms anyways. That way you can keep the faster aim without a second reticule.
The hellbringer is a solid mech but for a new player it can be a little fragile and hot. To this end I wouldn't go full laser duration with new players, the nodes below cooldown 5 can be switched for the nodes leading to and including heat gen 2/4, which will help reduce heat gen rather than increase it. Yes face time is a little more but that fraction of a second is nothing compared to a new player shutting themselves down with this mech. Without upgrades you are detectable at least within 560m for any mech, so yeah max ecm is a must. However with full ecm you don't really need full radar derp, because it's pretty likley that whatever's locking onto you is close enough to hit you before you can get behind cover or is comming from another source that you can't deal with derp anyways (like uavs). Again for a new player I'd move these niche improvements to more consistent areas like heat gen or survival the areas the mech needs it most. Weapon groups are fine, however the large lasers shouldn't be part of the chain fire. Yup, chain fire is for when you're heat capped and to that end the mediums are more efficent and produce less of a heat spike, only chain firing the mediums is good for newbies and veterans alike. When showing off your heat curve be sure to be slowly moving at all times to more accurately reflect battlefeild situations. Any leg movement generates a set amount of heat, so standing still whilst testing weapons gives you are slightly more generous curve (since in a real battle you are almost always moving). To finish off with the hellbringer, I have to mention that this thing can take an omnipod with narc quirks, it's not a very good narc mech (since narc quirks are instead of ecm) but most enemies don't know how to deal with a narc hellbringer. Maurauder is a good pick. Rifleman 2C is not at all what I'd reccomend to a new player, even the 5 ac2 Jager with its quirks (which is available for cbills) isn't that friendly to newbies. Brawling isn't doing too well but yup onion 2C is a fine choice. For new players I think the standard engine powerhouse is not only a better build but it's also a lot more forgiving, also the Roughnec 1C is a fine alternative that's not stuck behind a paywall. Top pick (to show first) for mrm mechs has to be the IV4 rather than the Thanatos, both are fine though (mrm60 is also fine on IV4). So yeah for the most part, a good selection of mechs. I think there could've been a bunch more categories, I'd like to see one underdog and lrm/atm heavies were conspicuously missing. ;) However the video is already long enough and we could go on forever. :p
Good point, its not often mentioned that reducing laser burn time(which is good) effectively compresses the heat spike time as well, which (can be) bad for new players not watching their heat gauge.
RJ and Nuttyrat kept telling me to get the Virago. GET THE VIRAGO. GET THE VIRAGO. At the time, I was (stupidly) convinced that the Timber Wolf was the best Clan Heavy. But as cool as the Timber Wolf is, it's not as versatile as the Hellbringer or the Ebon Jaguar. You can put so much firepower on those chassis. Two very kind souls in the MWO community gave me a Virago (They each gave me one at the same time, not knowing the other did it) and I love my Viragos. They're such good mechs. For a beginner player, I'd suggest the Hellbringer for them to try Heavy mechs out. Or the Warhammer-6D if they like IS mechs more. They're forgiving chassis, and can have a decent amount of firepower.
Recently discovered your channel TTB and really enjoying the content and tips. I'm a long time MechWarrior player (since MW2 in the early 90s) and an MWO founder. Have come back to the game after a couple of years hiatus and getting absolutely wrecked! Your insights and tips are proving invaluable, so thank you.
Lasers are a good choice for beginners because they're hit scan. I think one of my favorite builds on the hellbringer prime is easy and effective and it doesn't change any omni pods. LB 20 in the right torso and 3 medium pulse lasers and ECM in the left torso. Couple heatsinks and 4 tons of ammo and that's it. Simple and easy to make work.
Ich muss echt mal wieder bei mwo reinschauen. Zuletzt gespielt habe ich zu Zeiten als der highlander Dual ppc/gaus Build unglaublich mächtig war ( und jede Menge Spaß machte ).
I put a er large in the head and large pulse in the right torso. 4 er mediums. Don't use left arm. Some are saying it's squishy. That's because it's not 75 or 85 tons. Both tonnages tend to produce quality mechs. But in my experience. With ECM and proper placement the game feels like it's on an easier mode playing Loki than say a cauldron born.
I've been trying the Orion and am having a very hard time--it feels like on some of the more open maps you just can't close the distance in an effective way. Up until now I've been playing your Phoenix Hawk build and have had some really great matches.
So they will finally be able to balance long-range missiles properly and anything 80+ alpha. So other weapons can be buffed as buff the underused targeting computer.
Great presentation, a MUST watch for new players both in mech selection and builds as well as general tactics /battlefield awareness. Big like! I might to try six UAC 2 instead on the new Riffleman for that extra bursty volley and duck for cover on jam type play...range is only 90 less than AC2 although they run a bit hotter.🔫
What about the P Left-Torso with LRM 20? Was working my money up to buy the last bit of it and was stuck with the LRM 20 for a while. Can't say I don't miss it. Thoughts?
Honestly I feel the Warhammer 70tonner is an excellent choice for a heavy mech even for beginners. It is very tanky and has diverse loadout capabilities. Good overall mech.
The Warhammer (specifically the 6D and 6R) are among the best IS heavies, which can both be an advantage and a curse. On one hand you have a mech with excellent hardpoints, hitboxes and decent durability with good build options. On the other hand, everybody knows that it is a big threat on the field, so outside of assaults you tend to get focused hard. ^_^
TTB, I love your channel, but I have never been so disappointed in any one so much ever before. How could you have a beginner's guide without the heavy murderous stompy midget, the catapult. It doesn't need ecm because it's so small it looks up at light mechs and regularly is excluded from the big boy club., It doesn't need armlock, since it doesn't have any fancy tidbits like fingers and elbows. Also who needs armor when you have so much structure, you're basically tougher than 3 week old sidewalk gum. It also has the most beginner friendly design philosophy in MWO. 1. If it fits, it works 2. if it works do it 3. It's a catapult RUNAWAY; 4. You're not my mom, I do what I want.
The catapult is one of my favorite all time mechs, I want to get one and make a crazy ballistic missile build like rotary guns and mrm, is there a way to do this with out having ammo issues?
@@wishmast3r_363 yeah good point but still in my opinion it is an easy start for new players, just to lock on target and shoot without return fire in most cases.

I'm not a good player but lrm 5 or 10s, a tag and a constant fire weapon such as RACs or machine guns can be devastating. If you link the tag to the guns, the lrms lock fast and have a murderous and tight spread. 700 damage games aren't uncommon and kmmd just pour in.
Hey TTB, thanks for making this video. I’ve played this game off and on for years, but still consider myself a beginner. The laser vomit Hellbringer is great. One of my best performing mechs. My favorite mech is the MW5 Marauder with mrm 80. Is there a medium mech version with ecm and mrm’s?
That is only for the hero variant. You can get any variant of the Hellbringer and swap on omnipods to get the build. The only thing the hero gets you in this case is the C-bill bonus.

Team mates swarming around an enemy mech: "Team mates shielding the enemy..." I'm sure it's kind of difficult to be a very good player without viewing your team mates around you as an inconvenience, but damn... I do enjoy your content, though.
It's still like 120 matches to get enough money for a decent mech. They started giving you a big bonus when you first start though, so its easier to get your first good mech.
