Brian's voice was incredible, he could sing anything that was given to him and do a fantastic job of performing it. Each one of the guys were brilliant at what they did in the band but together they were magic, thank you Sweet for all the music and the eye candy I loved every one of you RIP Brian, Mick and Steve you are all sooo missed.

Steve Priest seemed to think that the kicking Brian took that nearly ended his career was an inside job carried out by people they knew, shocking if that was the case.
The Sweet were a great band if you just look past all the daft 70's glam rock gear they were wearing.

Much maligned and derided, and dismissed as a teeny boppers' group, Sweet are actually a truly great band and very musically accomplished. Vastly underrated by serious critics. No, you wouldn't play this to your grandma, but it wouldn't be rock 'n' roll if you could!

  • @glamgal7106
    @glamgal7106 6 ปีที่แล้ว +129

What stands out in this documentary is that the Sweet, unlike other musical acts of any era, didn't develop an "I'm holier than thou" attitude as a result from their success. Mick clearly said that the band owed their success to their fans who bought their records, "otherwise we wouldn't be here." I've seen videos of the Sweet performing in concert and it was obvious that they wanted to ensure that their fans were enjoying themselves--e.g. they'd get them to sing with them, like: Sweet: "Little Willy Willy won't..." Fans: "go home." I've been to shows where the musical act could care less about the audience and I'd think, "Well he/she seemed to forget who paid to listen to him/her perform." Musically, the Sweet utilized different techniques, I'm speaking about this as a musician. Among what was characteristic of their musical style included their vocal harmonies, sometimes arpeggiated towards Andy's falsetto, Brian's vocal range and versatility as a lead singer and \ Steve's ability to not only be a lead singer but provide his famous "cameo" since "Wig Wag Bam." If I'm not mistaken, all four band members have taken the role as lead singer. Instrumentally, they also made use of arpeggios--best example is the "Fox on the Run" riff--and "call and response"--"Rebel Rouser," as heard in the exchange, "Who is the face that's gonna set the pace?/I'm a rocker, I'm a roller, I'm an outer space" among other musical techniques. OK you're probably bored by all this...I'm saying this from a musician's point of view because I really believe that the Sweet didn't get the full credit that they deserved. When I was introduced to them, I thought that I found "auditory gold."

I mean it might be because they didn’t get that much success tho. There’s a reason everyone says they were underrated, because they were. Its always the people closer to the bottom of the chain who are much closer to reality.

      So very true.
I saw many concerts in my lifetime. I remember being soooo excited to see The Cars in the 80s. What a sad reality.
They sang for maybe a bit over an hour and never uttered a word to the audience, never tried any sort of audience participation etc. It was painful and robotic. Great music, shitty people. Not long ago when singer Rik Ocasek died, it wasn't any shock to me that he left his ex-wife penniless, even though they were still friendly and she stayed with him to nurse him until the disease finally killed him. She had to borrow money for food and he had no one else close to him in life. Apparently, he was a true jerk.
Also, Ted Nugent was trash. I was fourth row and all he did was scream and hit on all the girls down front. What he sounded like on records wasn't obvious in concert. Blackfoot opened and they blew him away.
My most favorite surprise was Genesis. Free tickets and I definitely did not want to go. Exceedingly great experience. Phil Collins was a hella showman and vocalist, drummer too.
Sat front row for Styx in their early 80s prime. THAT was amazing

Mick Tucker is one the best drummers of all times, Andy Scott is a master lead guitarist, Steve Priest is a cool bass player and Brian Connelly was one of the best singers of his day. One of the many things I love about Sweet, is that they never seemed to take themselves as seriously as so many of their peers at the time did. In the early to mid 70’s, rock stars were treated like these immortal gods - bigger than life and untouchable to the teeming masses of mere mortal fans... and it really went to their heads in most cases. Sweet seemed like they didn’t play by those rules. I’ve heard many stories from people who saw them back then that they actually liked to meet and mingle with their fans, at a time when most bands just went straight into the limo after the gig. And obviously Steve loved to play the class clown role to the extreme... much in the same way that Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick did a few years later. They just seemed much more accessible than other big acts of the day, which might be one reason they weren’t taken as seriously by the critics and the music media. They were very ‘punk’ in that way.

Qué emocion me provoca verlos hablar, no solo cantar.

The Sweet's story indeed was a sad one ...a band that should have done so much more, a band that was never recognised in the UK for their musicianship and vocal quality. A band who should have all remained mates but didn't...a band that crashed and burned too early. And sadly two members who tragically died so young.

rael1999 sweet was my heros when I was young. my first love was Brian. you are right. a sad story. Brian was broken. so many people loved him. only his mother did not want to know anything about him. the insidious attack of 1974. He started drinking. alcohol distroyed him. alcoholism is sickness. Brian was ill. He was sick and lonley. Mick has unfortunaley got leukemia. that is sad. the music lives on. RiP Brian and Mick. you are not forgotten. sorry my bad english

I agree with Poot Daggy here. To me, Sweet were very much in-step with the times that they were at peak popularity in (ie. 1973-1976). They pretty much DEFINED those times. It’s not a bad thing either. Those were great times! Their music still holds up well even today, but it’s very much a thing of the 70’s. They definitely influenced a lot of bands that came later, but I don’t think I’d say they were ‘ahead’ of their time. They just summed up their time much better than most other bands from the same era. The music still sounds fresh and exciting.

Viper GTS I have to agree with you! They weren’t just a fun band, they could really jam with the best of them! Many bands of this era were bubble gum! Many thought they were too. But when they really started doing their own tunes more and more it proved they were more than a simpleton type band! If they came out in the nineties they would have still produced top hits! Way way ahead of their time!!!

Vastly underrated in The States. Pretty much a radio singles band that still got noticed for some over-the-top singles. They've got a great sound with the crunch guitar providing a counterpoint to the tremendous saccharine vocal harmonies. Speaking of the harmonies they're just super. A band with four vocalists and great range. I wish they could have continued longer and grown more because they really had something different to bring to the 70's which had plenty of great heavy acts, but without the fantastic vocal harmonies and sweet crunch of The Sweet.

The Sweet were insanely talented - Mick Tucker alone was one of the best drummers of the 70s - and they had the songs, the looks, the image. What they did not have was a record label that understood their value as an album act as well as a singles act. And then came poor Brian's illness. But, what a great damn run they had. AMAZING band.

Lots of comments say they were underrated. ...they did sell millions of records...but they could have been promoted more so that even more people would have supported them because to know them is to love them.
In the end, what matters is they left the world with great songs.
They were ahead of their time ....you hear their influence in many popular bands...but they invented their own style.
Also, they had allot of variety so their repertoire was also interesting.
They did enjoy lots of success..they did live the rock and roll dream...

Been a long time since I saw this documentary. Nice to see Phil Wainman getting his face shown and speaking. He was very influential in their recordings until Mike Chapman decided he wanted full control (or tried to. Andy had other ideas) over the recording process. Phil never really got the credit he deserved at the time and was shabbily treated in the end. Even Andy has gone on record to admit as much. Love the clip of Your Not Wrong For Loving Me shows how good they were. The harmonies are sublime

@@KateLickerThere was never a lawsuit. Bohemian Rhapsody is a song with 50 cords, mostly classical cords, Freddie Mercury started writing the song in 1968. It is progressive rock. Queen was never a glam rock group, they did hard rock, progressive rock and metal in their early years, their albums are full of songs about King, Queens, ogres and fairies. The only song that you could perhaps describe as glam rock is Killer Queen, it is still a far more complex song then the usual glam rock (with 29 different cords).
The Sweet is a great band, but they did basic 4 - 6 cord rock, there is nothing wrong with that, but it is simply a very different sounds, it is like comparing apples and oranges. During this time a lot of people pretended to be camp, Freddie Mercury was naturally camp, it was not a show he put on. Queen also wrote all of their own material, and that makes a big difference. Queen remained popular and a high charting band for over 20 years, The Show Must Go was a top 5 charting song one month before Freddie Mercury's death, and he also did some of his best singing just before his death.
It is really difficult to remain relevant and productive for so long.
The Sweet was a really talented band, they definitely had potential to do more. They were starting to do some interesting stuff in the late 70's, so it is a shame they could not remain together for longer. They are really perhaps the only glam rock band that really had potential beyond glam rock.
