    Good information and to the point. My 1989 Pickup is doing the same thing. I like the approach on how to do it without tearing the dash apart, smart! Just taking it out from the bottom. Thanks!

      Thanks. Would have done it from the dash end, if it was not so hard to hook that cable back up the the dash cluster.

    Thanks a bunch. This did help me make sure I was looking at the right cable before I pulled it out. Thanks for the tips and saving me a bunch of wasted time trying to go at it from the top.

    If you don't have granite, use white lithium spray. Grease gets got with temps and won't work very well. Mine squeeled horribly. 1989 toyota single cab 4x4 3.0 v6

    Had your video in my favorites but the cable broke before I got to it (kept forgetting to buy graphite). Really bad idea to put it off! My mechanic, who is damned good, was unable to find a replacement for me. I also scoured the local junk yards; nothing. Had to buy a GPS electronic speedometer. Luckily it tucks in nicely on the dash and does not interfere with my high beam indicator light. Plugs into the USB adapter in the cigarette lighter slot. About $30 US.

    Amazing, thank you so much, I thought the only way to lubricate this was to do it from the dash end. I saw the cable when I was replacing my dash bulbs to LEDs.
    Quick Question: So if I literally push the cable back into its housing (after lubricating) it will go up and hook itself into the dash easily?

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did not have any trouble pushing it back into the dash. Was harder pushing it back into the tubing. Just took more force then I thought it would.

  • @mtbikercrazy

    Jim thank you for showing this, so just spray some lube down the tube from the dash end instead or buy a whole new speedo cable?

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would take the cable out. That way you can check the cable, and it is easier to get the lube in the housing.

      After unscrewing the retainer (22mm spanner) on the right side of the transmission, I had trouble pulling the cable out of the housing using only fingers. I grasped it with pliers, careful not to squeeze too hard and damage it, and after a couple of moderate tugs it came loose and pulled out easily.

      Thanks for the speedometer video. Mine doesn't work and I have not diagnosed it yet. I dread taking the dash apart to see. I know you already have a video about that which is how I first found your channel.
      I have a blown head gasket (I think) on an extremely rare 1987 Toyota Sun Rader pop top RV with a 22re. Unfortunately, I am too poor to have this professionally fixed. I keep putting this project off because I am terrified of failure. This project calls for exact specs which must be followed. I have a Haynes manual but have never used a torque wrench.
      I have to resort to TH-cam for all of my fixes. I have been pretty successful so far. I have completely torn down and rebuilt a stihl chainsaw, rebuilt a carburetor for a 66 mustang, and learned how to properly maintenance every piece of equipment I encounter.
      BUT!!!! The 22re information is severely lacking on TH-cam. Just know your contributions are greatly appreciated by me and any future 22r/re owner who seeks help.

    I have an 89 and like someone else I can not get the skinny inner cable out of the cable housing to grease it, I disconnected the cable from the transmission end as the video shows and pulled really hard... It just won't come out. Suggestions? I sure don't want to take the dash apart if I don't have to. Thanks

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taking the dash apart to get to the cable is not to bad. The cable might be stuck on the speedometer, or just to far gone, and stuck in the out part.

    • @CaryCotterman

      I just took the cable out of my '89 Toyota pickup and re-lubed it. After unscrewing the retainer from the right side of the transmission, I couldn't pull the cable out of the housing using just my fingers. I grabbed the cable end with pliers, being careful not to squeeze too hard and damage it, and after a couple of moderate tugs it came loose and and I was able to pull it out of the housing easily.

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I greased the whole cable. I don't like disconnecting the dash end, because I have a hard time hooking it back up. I think it would be better to spray some CLP down the cable housing from the dash end. Here is the CLP that I would use: amzn.to/2FKWyri

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should not have to put grease on the new cable. I would ask a local transmission shop if they grease them. I would think that they would use graphite or something, and people only grease them to try and make them last longer, when they are starting to go bad.

    • @bobby3940

    • @martynjames5963
      @martynjames5963 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you just pull out the old cable you can slip the new one up the old outer - if it is OK - and then no need to remove the dash. Just lube it up with graphite grease and poke it in and out a few times, carefully etc.

    • @bobby3940
      @bobby3940 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martyn James no you have to remove the dash to get to the cluster I took it off easily then replaced it after taking cable off 3 clips

    • @CaryCotterman
      @CaryCotterman ปีที่แล้ว

      I pulled the speedometer cable out of its housing on my '89 Toyota pickup by disconnecting it at the right side of the transmission. It had never been off before, so it still had the original factory lube on it, which was grease. I cleaned the old grease off the cable with solvent, dried it with a rag, and re-lubed it with white lithium grease as I slid it back into the housing. No need to remove the dash because the upper end of the cable just plugs back into the back of the speedo when you've pushed it all the way back into the housing.

      I would get under there and take a look. Some have an electrical sensor, instead of a manual one. I have been thinking about changing to an electric one. Would have to get a different dash gauge.
