@@oakmaiden2133 Yeah, when he says "Level up this skill here" it does the relevant skill/badge and what level he is at (basically number of projects that have used that skill)
if you want an in-character lighter for your pipe, i suggest a shepherd's lighter. it's essentially a tube with cotton rope and a spark wheel. there's a bead hooked into the rope to snuff the ember when you're done: just pull the rope down.
I would recommend attaching some sinew, rawhide strip, or even waxed thread to the sword and kit so you don't risk loosing it. This is especially important during a larp when you are out and about and using it while attached to your belt. That little sword would be a nightmare to try to find in some tall grass.
That makes sense, but I also like that you can switch it out and make the same pouch fit with different characters/contexts/vibes by trading out that piece. Of course, that doesn't preclude some kind of cord/lanyard; you'd just have to make it something you could untie.
The tobacco pocket at the bottom that inverts without a closure was giving me anxiety the whole time. I'm so happy he addressed that at the end even if it was just a quick little mention
These "one more pocket" type of builds are my favorite. This kit, the portable vanity from a while ago, the Staff of the Wanderer. Yeah the Staff of the Wanderer doesn't have many pockets since it's a staff (still has some), but the "here's some empty space let's use it for something nifty" approach comes from the exact same place, and I love it so much!
So glad I've found this. My grandad used to smoke pipes and I love the cherry smell of the tobacco. When he passed away I requested some of his pipes I might make one of these for them and use in DND ❤
The inclusion of a pipe stand is an awesome touch. I have put together several pipe kits using old glasses cases and the like. I quickly decided that each kit needed some kind of pipe stand because of how useful they are. The tobacco tray is something I haven't included, but I may have to start making some of those. P.S. I haven't forgotten about you; I will be sending you a gift card for tobacco tomorrow.
I made a tank bag and handle bar bag, for my motorcycle, out of the waterproofed canvas. It works amazing, and I wouldn't have had the confidence to make it without this channel and you
Nice setup. As a pipe smoker it hits all my targets for carrying. I’ve been using a simple leather pouch with a small baggie for tobacco, and while it’s functional it’s also a bit blah. Being able to unfold it so that everything is laid out is so cool. I may end up making one like yours but it would be improved, I think, if it could be used without having to remove your belt. Also, the tobacco pocket looks and works okay, but riveting both bottom corners instead of in the middle would open it up a little better and eliminate that little bit of tobacco that gets stuck in the bottom forever. You’re right that the design can be adapted for other uses. The general principle might even make a decent backpack.
I don't really larp or anything but I enjoy seeing what y'all make and I mainly watch your channel for the cool tricks and ideas that I can use for my own projects. I may have more experience in some skills but seeing other people's ideas and tricks can help me improve my work and y'all do things I've never tried that I like to learn so thank for that.
if the little sword is too small, some people make little pipe tools like the little three tool guy you added that are just a nail with a flat head and a kind sharp spoony side that could probably fit as a holder and an extra tool. Also making a pipe tool like this could be a potential blacksmithing project for this channel. Love the vid! thanks for sharing how you made this!
Great job on the pouch! For the larger pocket--to help it open up yet keep the size of the flap, just flare the sides as they go up to the open edge. This will make the open side a bit longer & will naturally open up as you sew the sides together evenly! I learned that from experience when making a purse for a friend.
Hey Kit, if you want to make a pocket flair out make the bottom seam the exact size you want and add additional material to the top seam. Just a quarter inch on the top seam will add a lot of extra space. Use glue to set the bottom seam first then chase up the sides to keep out weinkles
The pinch on the pocket did work out okay. However, might i suggest a different way? The way i usually make pockets like that is to cut them out in a trapezoid shape (making the top slightly wider than the bottom and tapering the sides). It's faster and easier than pinching and riveting it, and it sits a little smoother. Otherwise, I think it's a pretty cool design.
I stopped smoking pipes a few years back, but this is really cool! I suggest flake tobacco. It's really handy for traveling as it comes in sheets that you can just crumble up when you're filling your bowl. It also let's you customize your smoke. If you leave it more compact, it'll be a longer smoke, but if you crumble it nicely, it'll be a fairly quick smoke for when you've got a five minute smoke break. Bosses tend to get cranky if you go for a smoke and come back an hour later (ask me how I know).
For anyone looking for something you can use as a lighter on your LARPs that isn't a Zippo but is re-usable (and doesn't require you to keep matchsticks dry), check around for a permanent match lighter. They use the same fluid as the Zippo, come in a variety of shapes (that can be easily disguised with a leather case), and look a bit cooler because you don't see them that often.
I like the custom stem idea. Would be cool to see you build a whole long wizardy pipe that can pull apart in the middle of the stem and sort of "fold in half" to fit in a smaller case.
As a hobbyist level leather worker myself I truly do appreciate when a basic set of mental plans work out! Just start with my basic leather kit and tooling set along with some paper and card stock for making templates and just go to town. I totally get and dig what you do here. I came across the video because as a pipe enthusiast myself I wanted to find a little project to do for fun today on my day off. I usually do custom guitar straps and amplifier/cab covering so this will be a nice little change up plus I just bought a neat little pipe and I’m gonna do this made to fit just for that pipe.
As a Leatherworker myself, I applaud you designing your own product. I enjoyed watching this. Love the idea of the foldable leather bowl. The additional pocket you added would be great for adding a couple spare filters. I was going to comment about adding the leather pipe holder when lit, then sure enough you added it towards the end of the video. Only improvement i would add would be your tobacco holder should be smooth side in to allow for easy cleanout/replacement. You may also want to consider adding snaps to the exterior, incase your walking around and your sword falls out, and your pipe bag opens up while walking. Other than that, Great job all around!!!
Turning the last week into an AMA/social time sounds like a good idea. Should help keep down any burnout. Its a lot of work to do a channel like you have here. I LOVE this pouch. I love any purpose-built pouch/system that'll make your job easier. I do see two things to consider with this specific design that might need monitoring. You'll need to take off your belt every time you want to load up your pipe, which might get old or awkward. Also, gravity might let the triangle tray fall out if you don't reverse the direction you put it into the strap. Love what you do. Thanks, and keep up the good work!!!
I'm an avid smoker of tobacco and non tobacco products. I have my monstrous wizard pipe that stays home but that thing is a pain in the arse to travel with. I got the cutest little mini pipe as a gift so I immediately made myself a little pack in a hard case that fits in a coat pocket with all the necessities and it is so great to have something that I can just grab and go. I have been considering making a leather kit that folds open completely to give a bit of a work surface though. I love that sowing machine of yours and need one in my life... Especially considering that I live in a country that frequently doesn't have power so a hand driven machine is really handy and I love the rustic look.
That's a really nice looking pipe bag. One thing I found when making patterns is once you get your paper pattern worked out make a prototype out of some cheap eva craft foam. It comes in a variety of thicknesses that are about the same as most leather you use. That way you can see if you need to make adjustments in your pattern before committing things to leather.
I actually have a few antique "match safes" which look like a Zippo lighter but is like a metal match box to match an older aesthetic for your pipe kit at larps. Altoids Smalls tins do well in a pinch to start making a modern one
I've been wanting to do something like this but on a larger scale for an adventurers backpack. I want to be abel to lay it all open and also be able to use it as a work surface, possibly on the back and in the center. And yes! I would love just a hang out stream!
I'm an intermittent pipe smoker, and a long time back, I was looking for something to put all my gear in. I saw a CD player pouch (like I said, a long time back!) with a large pocket for the player - big enough to hold a couple of small pipes and cleaners, a thinner pocket behind it for CDs - now tobacco pouches, and a small zipped pocket that I guess was for the wires but now holds pipe tools and the lighter. All in fake leather but hey, I don't larp so I won't get laughed at :D Oh, and it has a belt strap.
Been thinking about making one of these for me and my fiancé for our… herbal refreshments while out camping in our ren fair outfits so this works out awesome! Also I was the way you can have more room in a pouch is by spacing out the holes on the gusset itself and then the back panel has the same spacing. The gap allows for the leather to sag a bit rather than be pulled flush to the back panel. I learned that from watching Magnus over at Dark Horse Work Shop
Dude. Your presentations always make me smile. I love the combination of your enthusiasm and creativity. And the stuff you make almost never disappoints. Thank you for being you. You rock.
Historically, pipes were carried in hats if not in a special either boiled leather or metal container. But for the rogues that you play hat would be ideal stuck and stitch that holds the side of your hat up
I see a similar type of belt bag in my near future for my scouting activities! with the exception that I'd make a permanent bond on only one side of the belt loops and put heavy duty snaps at the bottom of them so I can take it off my belt without having to take my belt off.
Few Ideas for the 2.0 model kit 1.could've gusseted the tobacco pouch with a flap and tie closure 2. could've used some thin wood or paper board to reinforce the back(where it mounts to the belt) 3.couldve had little miss red make you a design for nicotine (like the coffee/alchemist box) and tool that into the outer shell (just to make it sexy ) 4. a leaf of lorien closure would've rocked on this kit 5. line the tobacco pouch so the tobacco stays fresh for days (cause you know LARPing is time consuming )
I love the idea of the "chat". This is my favorite channel on TH-cam. Thank you for all your work. I have a feeling that you already know this, but in the movies, Gandalf stores his long pipe in his staff. ?future build?
dont know if it was already mentioned but instead of a square pattern for the pocket with a pinch. use a trapezoid pattern. the seam will go all the way across the bottom.
Been making alot of tobacco pouches lately. When I do the bottom pocket I kick out the top by about a half or quarter inch on either side to make more of a trapezoid shaped piece. Then when you sew it on flush it gives that room without bunching up on the bottom
Incase you haven't seen it zippo makes a lighter specifically for pipes ive used it a couple of times and it was much nicer to use then a normal zippo for my pipe also the pipe stem video sounds awesome especially if its church warden
You should include a small roll of hemp wick, it's another great alternative to matches and lighters, you can light it off anything and it's perfect for pipe smoking
so! Fun "build"! Hint one... for the "bowl", use snaps instead of rivets at the corners, then you can truly pack it flat. Hint 2...On aligning the cemented areas, a piece of waxed paper (you you can still find it, most dollar stores still carry it....for...$1 or so. put it between your two pieces, and slowly slide it out from under as you are pressing the glued surfaces together. Have fun leveling up all!!
Thats quiet a cool bag! May I can adapt it for my printer character And kinda funfact: In the german larp/medieval scene we call a lighter 'Taschendrache', literally 'bag dragon' or 'pocket dragon'. I love the term cause its so cute and your lighter slay it :D
First, I would love to spend more time with you guys, your videos have inspired me from day one and I can’t wait to use the techniques I’ve learned from you to make my own character come to life. I also would love to see your reaction to Baldur’s Gate and the character you create.
still amazed how much this channel has grown since i subscribed XD Glad you taking a week off each month plus excited to see you play BG3, its awesome!
For the large pocket, an alternative way to do it is to cut it trapezoidal in shape, wider at the top (ie opening) than the bottom, so when you square up the sides to sew, it will bulge open giving you the open pocket. (Or do it at the bottom so things are more secure in the pocket.)
You are just the best every time I see one of your videos pop up on TH-cam. I get excited to see what you’ve made next. P.s. I don’t know how you do it because I’m trying to build an entertainment system for my room that also functions as a workstation and I don’t even know the first step on how to do it other than I need to buy wood.
Just a suggestion. I use a survival match for my pipe it's sort of like a zippo just a cylinder with fluid then a flint striker with a wick and a Farro rod on the outside of the body
Well worth watching just for the great closure idea. Also, hard yes to a video about making pipe stems. I tried and failed at making a pipe a long time ago, but have leveled up my woodworking, and my workshop, a fair amount since then and would love to try again. Finally, I once again voice my support for the hand-crank Amazon stitching machine. Mine is still going strong and paid for itself several times over with the pouches I was able to sell at the Ren Faire.
This is so cool. I made a wizard pipe a couple years back, and I have been wanting to make a short stem pipe lately. This is such a cool project, and it makes me wanna make it. And a pipe. Haha. Expertly done, sir! ^_^
As for your lighter you could use a permanent match. Some are small enough to hold the reservoir hidden in your left hand while you display the metal match in your right hand. A few have a cyberpunk vibe.
I'd love to see a video on making a pipe stem. And maybe you could give some hints on how to modify this build in order to make something to hide cigarettes. Years ago I've seen a thing that looked like a pipe but you put in a cigarett and could smoke it without people noticing.
I'll give you a little tip that an old pro gave me--try to avoid cutting any 90-degree angles. Sharp corners are exactly where splits and tears like to form under stress. That's actually true for most materials, but especially for flexible ones.
You should check out rope lighters (a.k.a. Crows nest lighters, shepherds lighters)... it's a lighter that uses cotton rope as the fuel and can fit into the adventurer's look and works particularly well in windy conditions... I have a 25'-30' rope in a monkey's fist with a daisy chain as storage for the rope with the lighter at the opposite end of the rope - so serves a dual purpose of having a bunch of extra rope handy (e.g. undo the daisy chain and toss the monkeys fist in the crook of a tree or between rocks and use the lighter's fuel to help the party climb the hill).
Interesting ideas. I have a couple suggestions for your consideration. When I smoke a pipe (rarely nowadays), I prefer to light with a match, but I do prefer the convenience of a lighter. So, if you want to look more impressive and magical, maybe you should try a "reusable match" or "permanent match". It's basically a wick attached to a striker that's attached to the lid of a bottle that holds the lighter fluid that has a magnesium rod attacked to the side. The lid has an o-ring to keep the lighter fluid from evaporating away (a problem with Zippos). Just unscrew it, strike it, light the pipe, and either blow the flame out or douse by putting it back in the lighter fluid. I know dousing the fire in lighter fluid sounds dangerous, but it works. There are basic designs, but there are some ornate models you can get too. I don't have a long stem, but I still want one. I wonder if you could make several stems that can be stuck together to make a longer stem. Then, you can make it as long as you want. You can even add more ore less of a curve to some, depending on mood. In my experience, the striker pad or red phosphorus on the box of safety matches will wear out. So, you might want to consider strike anywhere matches and strike on sandpaper or a metal file or emery board or whatever.
Watching this video I just came up with an idea for you as a leatherworker. What if for your long stem pipes instead of putting some metal fixture or button on your tobacco pouch to close it why not use the pipe itself as a closure piece to secure everything together for your long stem pipes
I really enjoy watching you “create”. I’m an SCA a holiday. Making “little pouches for “stuff” is right up my alley. Besides, if I need a laugh you’re so funny!
That particular pipe tool is called a Czech tool… Love the pouch but I recommend keeping the baccy in a ziplock inside the pouch to have better humidity control while also avoiding potential taste transfer (I love leather but I can’t imagine it to taste good…) Zippo offers a pipe insert which makes lighting a lot easier! What’s your current favourite blend? Also argument pro stitching around the edges: it looks better and you have a sewing machine anyways! Come on! 😜
@SkillTree Have you tried to make a dagger from a metal file yet? Could be an interesting project especially if you etched the blade with a cool design.
Love this! A couple of issues though. 1. Do you need a lid for the tobacco pouch bit. As you fold it up surely some tobacco comes out. 2. Would poppers instead of rivots on the belt loop be good so you can take it off without taking off the belt. 3. How about using a chain for the little sword thing so you don't lose it?
Fun fact the lighter was actually invented before matches. But also pro tip you can buy an insert for your zippo to fill it with butane. I love mine and the regular lighter fluid one always evaporates too quickly for some reason.
for the pockets... pinch the corners instead. I will make the pocket look more boxy.. like it has side panels. and maybe only use the rivets on the top edge of the pockets.
At 11:18, you mention that your small square of leather is 11 millimeters by 11 millimeters…. That would make a very small square: the thinkness of a dime is about a millimeter 😊
At some point I'd like to see a longer form video of y'all going camping in costume, using the things you have built. Like a long weekend trip or something.
Just my two cents. I personally don't really care for streaming games and the like so may not tune in for those, but I fully support the channel taking an easier week and having it for the people that do want to see it.
I would love to see you make a pipe! It would be such a fun project and I know you would make it super cool! You know what you need? A wizard staff or traveler's walking stick that holds your long stem pipe.
I think you should make a two-wheel traveling cart for all Year's kits so you can actually walk around with it with compartments for each kit as well as big enough to hold a tent and your cot
"Go out and make something incredible"... that's awesome. Love the kit and the vid. Gonna have to start smoking now... or come up with another habit that I need a kit for...
Another really, well, Clever project. :) Very well thought out and compact. You may want a tether on the sword closure to make sure it doesn't get lost. I like your solution for securing the triangle piece. I would have been tempted to put two snaps on the outside of the triangle and the other half on the inside of the pouch. Then you could just snap it into place. Either way, its a great little piece of kit.
Hey Cl3ver, how about leather boots? Not customizing a regular pair, but making one from scratch. I know, making your first pair isn't easy even for experienced leathercrafters (such as yourself), but it will be a new horizon to conquer for you, and a lot of fun for us. Also, I'm slowly starting to make a pair for myself, and I would like very much to compare results of somebody with skills and tools, with mine (because it will be my second leather project ever).
For a lighter, there is a lighter I've seen ads for that has a match style head. Like, it is a re-lightable metal match. Might be an interesting item to look into.
If you use this pouch, do you always have to unbuckle your belt? Maybe it would be nice to have a kind of adapting plate thingy on your belt with pressure rivets to snap the pouch or other similar stuff and exchange them as you need them.
Although I love how your pocket turned out, after the segment about the difficulties in making a pocket, Something I recommend is to learn some leather forming techniques such as wet forming and press forming (both are possible for a hobbyist it’s just less known)
I'm a regular pipe smoker and this is the coolest kit I've seen in ages. I use a wet formed tobacco tray and never have room to take it with me on trips, that idea of the triangle is brilliant.

I love that sowing machine of yours and need one in my life... Especially considering that I live in a country that frequently doesn't have power so a hand driven machine is really handy and I love the rustic look.
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who had a sudden realization one day about the pipe cleaners😅
This could be a great base for a forgery/writing kit. As a bard/thief that would be very useful :)
Love the pipe bag. Excellent idea to have just a hang out episode and relaxing week.
The hangout week sounds like an excellent idea.
Few Ideas for the 2.0 model kit
1.could've gusseted the tobacco pouch with a flap and tie closure
2. could've used some thin wood or paper board to reinforce the back(where it mounts to the belt)
3.couldve had little miss red make you a design for nicotine (like the coffee/alchemist box) and tool that into the outer shell (just to make it sexy )
4. a leaf of lorien closure would've rocked on this kit
5. line the tobacco pouch so the tobacco stays fresh for days (cause you know LARPing is time consuming )
i like this suggestion
I love the idea of the "chat". This is my favorite channel on TH-cam. Thank you for all your work. I have a feeling that you already know this, but in the movies, Gandalf stores his long pipe in his staff. ?future build?
dont know if it was already mentioned but instead of a square pattern for the pocket with a pinch. use a trapezoid pattern. the seam will go all the way across the bottom.
As a pipe smoker....I think this is the best kit I've seen
Been making alot of tobacco pouches lately. When I do the bottom pocket I kick out the top by about a half or quarter inch on either side to make more of a trapezoid shaped piece. Then when you sew it on flush it gives that room without bunching up on the bottom
I have had one of those for eight years! I thought that metal apparatus was a coke spoon. It makes so much sense it's a tobacco pipe press.
May I can adapt it for my printer character
And kinda funfact: In the german larp/medieval scene we call a lighter 'Taschendrache', literally 'bag dragon' or 'pocket dragon'.
P.s. I don’t know how you do it because I’m trying to build an entertainment system for my room that also functions as a workstation and I don’t even know the first step on how to do it other than I need to buy wood.
a'ght. Not a smoker, but I see this as the perfect kit to carry (bushcraft) firemaking supplies and a compass, and maybe a minimalist IFAK.
Just a suggestion. I use a survival match for my pipe it's sort of like a zippo just a cylinder with fluid then a flint striker with a wick and a Farro rod on the outside of the body
Whoa, I had never heard of one of those, but it is everything I could have hoped it would be! Yeah, there is a lot of potential there
@GeorgeVCohea it really helps me keep from breaking immersion too badly at renfaire
@@erikwulfrik1934
Even if wholly impractical, it's still a cool piece of kit for this reason alone.
sailors lighters look good for larp also a zippo in antique bronze has a nice look to it
As for your lighter you could use a permanent match.
A play through would be worth watching. I enjoy the making stuff but a bit of variety would be cool.
I'll give you a little tip that an old pro gave me--try to avoid cutting any 90-degree angles. Sharp corners are exactly where splits and tears like to form under stress. That's actually true for most materials, but especially for flexible ones.
for the larger pocket, it may be worth looing into wet-forming. Used mainly for knifes and guns, but could be applicable there as well.
Those look like Mosin Nagant ammo pouches. You can get them cheap at places like sportsman’s guide.
Been waiting for this episode!!
Omg I have that same shirt!! Too cool! I can't wait to use this kit idea for my field painting supplies. 😁😁
That particular pipe tool is called a Czech tool…
Love the pouch but I recommend keeping the baccy in a ziplock inside the pouch to have better humidity control while also avoiding potential taste transfer (I love leather but I can’t imagine it to taste good…)
Zippo offers a pipe insert which makes lighting a lot easier!
What’s your current favourite blend?
Also argument pro stitching around the edges: it looks better and you have a sewing machine anyways! Come on! 😜
Let’s gooo!! Time to make my day even better with yet another skill tree upload
So glad I found this channel the things you make are amazing I love all this stuff
@SkillTree Have you tried to make a dagger from a metal file yet? Could be an interesting project especially if you etched the blade with a cool design.
I would love more looks back at the items you've made and how they did, because that video was so interesting to watch.
Another great project. Your creativity is inspiring.
for the pockets... pinch the corners instead. I will make the pocket look more boxy.. like it has side panels. and maybe only use the rivets on the top edge of the pockets.
Good call!
At 11:18, you mention that your small square of leather is 11 millimeters by 11 millimeters…. That would make a very small square: the thinkness of a dime is about a millimeter 😊
LOL! Dumb slip of the tongue. That would be such a cute little thimble of a tray🤣
I'm assuming you meant centimetres not millimetres 😂
Just shows how closely I pay attention while watching your videos… which for me in general, is a kinda rare.
Keep up the good work!
You could also make a smal dart on the bottom corners of the pocket, that would also give you a bit more room.
"Go out and make something incredible"... that's awesome. Love the kit and the vid. Gonna have to start smoking now... or come up with another habit that I need a kit for...
I bet y'all would be a lot of fun to hang out with. I know when I get all the stuff I'm going to make this and some other projects from here.
How about making a larp pipe for non-smokers? One that emits something that looks like smoke?
Could always put a little cone of incense into the well of the pipe
Hey Clever! I really REALLY like your video's! I struggle a lot to pick the right leather for my projects... any tips?
Although I love how your pocket turned out, after the segment about the difficulties in making a pocket, Something I recommend is to learn some leather forming techniques such as wet forming and press forming (both are possible for a hobbyist it’s just less known)
