- Here's Ellen Greene and Jake Gyllenhaal's performance of the iconic "Suddenly, Seymour" during the July 2nd matinee performance of Encores! Off-Center's 2015 concert production of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's "Little Shop of Horrors." This video also features Tracy Nicole Chapman as Chiffon, Marva Hicks as Crystal, and Ramona Keller as Ronnette.
In a text interview with Playbill soon after the production, Ellen had this to say of the performance: “At the end of ’[Suddenly,] Seymour’ I was spent - a song that is difficult for me, for in the lyrics I confess that, ‘Nobody ever treated me kindly.’ The frightening reality of being vulnerable, opening up, letting go, and giving in and trusting. 'Please understand it’s still strange and frightening for losers like I’ve been, it’s so hard to say…’ Today the word 'loser’ is used as a punchline, a put down, but the feeling down on oneself, having a low self esteem - the reality of feeling that word - well, it hurts and drains you causing a helplessness, as if there is a bottomless black hole. Well, during the matinee, I just lost myself in that well of helplessness, sadness and emptiness. I felt like I was hearing that lyric in such a new way, opening up a wound so old and deep. I lost myself in the echo of loneliness, and I did not come in with the next 'Suddenly Seymour,’ but Jake came in with his entrance. He rescued me out of my and Audrey’s reverie through his compassion, empathy and dearness that he so kindly gave me and showered on me. This concert production was directed by Dick Scanlan, choreographed by Patricia Wilcox, and featured musical direction by Chris Fenwick.

TH-cam has been recommending to me many versions of her doing this song, and she varies the business and acting parts of it every time, with each Seymour -- but vocally she absolutely nails it, every time. It's a killer performance.

One night, in an upper east side karaoke bar, a flamboyantly gay man performed this song perfectly. Acting and singing both parts out across himself. It was the best performance I have ever seen.

Every single performance of this woman is unique. She just express herself in a honest way, so each time is different. A true artist.
There was supposed to be a cd released that was recorded in the 70’s, but it never came out. 2 cuts are on the songs for a winters night cd. What she does with marry me a little is what Sondheim must have wished for. She should have done a lot on broadway. I don’t understand what happened. Night music, dolly, 20th century all would have been perfect. Probably mrs. Lovett and many more as well.

i love how they just hold each other at the end, so intimately, instead of making out. really highlights the sincerity of their love and friendship compared to the farce of a relationship Audrey was forced through with Orin.
I think it also highlights that they felt weird about having a 63-year-old woman make out with a 36 year old man, which is funny because they probably wouldn't have blinked an eye if the ages were reversed.

The making out reminds me of my late lady the first time we did. She made it abundantly clear I would lower all physical and mental defense and not resist. She would not harm me but would be touched everywhere. I was hers and said she would never harm me, even tried going for the Makarov and she said I won't need that. Took a a lot of trembling and rapid heartbeat, and mild resistance but true to her word she did it, did not harm me and eventually got used to it saying I was hers and would never hurt me or allow anyone else to hurt me. Eventually, I let go of past pain and did something I hadn't done in a long time: trusted someone. As long as we were together she took the lead. She figured I would in time, but she passed before that happened.
The fact that she is 64 and can still sing the song is speechless. Personally I think it is one of the most hardest songs to sing mostly for the female part but she still rocks it. X
Ethan Roberts she’s very smart. She simply transposed the song down a tone to fit her 2015 vocal range. The original key would not have been something she’d even try now. The lower key is also a good key for Jake (who can definitely sing!). I love this duet. It brings the house down snd stops the show every single night of a run.
I think one of the reasons Ellen is so amazing as Audrey is because despite the fact that she has been Audrey so many times, she gives a different performance every time. It’s like she wipes her memory of the script and just reacts how Audrey would because she knows the character so well

Ellen said she missed that line in the song because she was so emotional. She was just so overcome that she couldn't get the line out.

Just like she has said that repeatedly, when she has made mistakes in singing the songs live, for the last decade. She has similar excuses for being a really unpleasant human being too

I will never forget this concert. And honestly, I think she was so overwhelmed that she just couldn’t sing the climactic line and Jake was aware of it and they finished it beautifully together.

She pulled that off in the film too. though she wasn't the one they wanted playing Audrey in the film, they wanted Cyndi Lauper. Thankfully she said no so they fell back on Ellen. No one can play Audrey like Ellen can.
She said in the comment under the video that she got so lost in what she was feeling she forgot one of her Seymours, that's that "lost moment", but Jake came in and made his entrance and got them back on track. I can only imagine, after so many years, how one can internalize a character. Powerfully emotional song, and Jake was right there supporting her. She is just incredible.
I was Audrey in my h.s. production. I just found out the guy who played Seymour passed away in a tragic accident... as I watch this, I cant help but cry and smile at the same time. Beautiful memories. Beautiful performances here. Thanks for posting

Two things, first off, the fact that she seemingly is hit so hard with the raw emotion and history she has with this song that she isn't able to sing a line is amazing, second, this is to me, still the greatest Broadway musical song of all time.
When she couldn't sing the line and Jake noticed and he sang...it made his "Yes, you can" even more moving. 😢❤

Sometimes it can be a curse for an actor to be so closely associated with a role that they can seem stuck with it. Then there are times it can be such a blessing to be given the opportunity to grow with a role over years and decades and to really plumb all the dimensions that character has inside it. Jake gave a great performance here, but it was clear how well organized and well crafted it was on his part. Ellen on the other hand has done the work so many times over, by now she just lives it, and all the variations she brings feel right and true because they are (including the dark spiral she mentions being trapped in). It's hard to make Jake Gyllenhaal look like the newbie, but boy did she do that.
She literally sings herself out of breath! It’s quite incredible.
I threw my phone clear across the room because of how good this is.
I'm not sure if it is acting or if she's about to pass out on stage at some points.... But she will always be the one and only Audrey and no one will ever reach her level of awesomeness. When she sings I forget to breathe. It is so impressive that she can still do it like that, making you forget that she aged at all.
I think she's bending over to tighten her stomach muscles to belt.

I think she did, the audience reacted as they reacted, you can't control what could have been nervous laughter. She totally let go and swam in the Audrey pool. It's an incredibly emotional song and she was there for it all. And luckily, Jake was too, and came in for his entrance when she went up on hers. Very touching and the point of the whole song: Seymour's beside you, Seymour's your friend.
