    I am trying to learning piano tuning and repair from an accredited distance learning course and I must say, your videos are so clear and easy to understand. Far easier than the course I am trying to complete, which is why I searched out additional sources of information. You really ought to create your own distance-learning course. You have the gift of being able to teach complex ideas clearly. I should know - I was a teacher for 23 years. Thank you for this information.

    I used to put a stereo mic on the piano and guitar and run the signal into a Marantz tuner with the tiny oscilloscope, so I could see the beats and a Lisajou wave form on the scope would deform the ovoid display to those beats. You can also hear them, but to watch them was absolutely fascinating. When you got the two strings perfect a circle would appear on the screen and stabilize and just dissipate with the decay of the note. With a piano and the other strings muted you can see it too, and get an audible and visual picture of it. Superb videos!

    Yeah I agree this is like the best channel on TH-cam for learning how a piano really works. I could only learn so much doing things on my own, a good teacher like Ron makes all the difference, and fills in all the little gaps in knowledge. Ron is like the guy who comes along and gives you the missing pieces of the puzzle you've spent years trying to put together and see what the puzzle is a picture of without the missing pieces.

      Thanks for sharing! I would like to say that I'm not sure who Ron is :) I think you may be confusing me with someone else.

    Thanks! I cant afford to pay someone to tune my rust bucket of a piano, and recently I am trying to sing, so I must make sure my piano is in tune. You are helpful and appreciated!

    I tell you, the use of 'beats' and 'sharps' but no 'flats' and seeing them from a tuner's perspective instead of a music theory perspective is kinda jarring. At any rate, I love your videos and you've really helped me understand the things I can't hear from books. Many thanks! 💖

    Thank you so much for making these videos! If you have time, and would be so kind, a video explaining how to set an equal temperament by ear (using 3rds and 6ths as well as 4ths and 5ths) would be invaluable! I've found some instructions in some literature, but following them has, thus far, been unsuccessful for me. Balancing out all the intervals to sound musical is proving a challenge for my inexperienced self, so any guidance would be hugely appreciated! Your channel is amazing - thank you for taking the time to make these wonderful videos!

      Thank you for watching! We are working toward making a video which will go through all of the steps in tuning a piano by ear including setting the temperament octave. Once we are finished with the Tuning Theory videos that will be our next step. I want to make sure I present all of the theory information first.

    Quick question. Your video's are amazing and very informative! you've put a great effort into them and explain it very well. But may I ask why you don't set the tuning pin when you tuned the middle C?

      Thanks for watching Dimitri. I'm glad you're enjoying the video. This particular video isn't meant to be a demonstration of setting the pins, that is covered in another video.

    Why not get a n oscilloscpe to shobw the sound waves, or even just make drawings of the sting moving with the 1st partial and then how only exact divisions of the string canbe imposed on to the major parial on a movin string .

    Is the beat at the same pitch as the note? I hear some very highly pitched note that goes "waowao" but it doesn't sound like the note I pressed. Maybe the strings of the piano I am using are too short.

    • @howardpianoind
      @howardpianoind  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The beat won't necessarily be a pitch. But I think what you're hearing is the right thing.

      Is it possible to hear multiple sets of partials at the same time when tuning intervals?

    • @howardpianoind
      @howardpianoind  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The different partials are there. Some are just easier to hear than others. Sometimes more than one partial is able to be heard at one time.
