My mother used to make me onigiri stuffed with salmon and wrapped in nori, fried ebis with little baby carrots, or a small omurice in a container (which always got cold by lunchtime) occasionally for my school lunch. Because I live in America, none of my schoolmates back then knew what I was eating most of the time, and it was always fun to explain what they were and how yummy they tasted. This bento, for some reason, reminds me of those times.

I really like these videos because you can hear the everyday noises around and it almost makes me feel like I'm back in Japan. I just don't get to eat the delicious food. 🥲
I watched a documentary about how things used to be: When trains would stop at stations, food vendors would approach the train and you could buy local snacks and local rice meals. It made me a bit sad that this way of life is disappearing but I still love the Shinkansen and ekiben, especially the ones with regional specialties.
There’s a few videos that I remembered when I saw your comment. They are about the Indian tiffin pack lunches. The workers go off to work & the stay at home wives cook them lunch and put it in those stacked, cylindrical, metal containers. They’re collected then, this part amazes me, they’re delivered all over by lunchtime. Thousands of them, no fancy computer technology needed and they rarely lose a box or deliver it to the wrong place. The image in my mind is of the delivery men, sat on the floor of a hot train with the tiffin boxes fastened together to deliver.
I’m happy to see the trains a little busier these days. It’s been so strange to see empty Japanese streets and stations during the pandemic. I hope 2022 is a good one for us all. Thank you for the lovely trip to Osaka!
That Ekiban ,and dessert perfect choice for the train . Really enjoyed the train been a long time since I travelled on them . Love the view, enjoyed the journey , could smell that country air from here Shinichi fabulous. 😀

Shinichi, your bento looked so beautiful and delicious 😋. When you were purchasing the butter cakes for your friend, one thing that stood out to me was the incredible and polite customer service that you received from the employees of that shop. Just another wonderful tradition of Japan. Also, seeing how everything is so sparkling clean is so refreshing and another custom that shows Japanese culture at its finest. You probably take these things for granted but to someone outside Japan they are amazing and something I wish other countries would emulate. Take care, say hi to Satoshi and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. 👍🤗❤☃️🎄🙏🌎
I don't really know why but I find it kind of calming being on a long train ride and seeing the train take its stops between cities, knowing your stop is far off and you can just sort of relax and take it in. I guess it's one of those rare moments in the modern world where there's just nothing else to do. That's certainly not to say it's all great, I once sat between a guy trying to set the record for shots taken on a train and another who decided to clutch his luggage to himself like it was filled with gold. But that's in the US. Tip for anyone traveling in the US. If you take a long distance train, imagine its just like this video, but the exact opposite.
Seeing these videos about Japan only validates my dream to visit the country or my dream to live and make life in Japan. It’s been my dream country since I can remember. Luck to all those who live there or visit this wonderful place
The Nozomi line looks really nice inside. Maybe someday when I return to Japan, I'll spend extra to try and compare it with the regular Shinkansen lines.
