I couldn't care less about faster shift times, or the minute fuel savings. I just want something that isn't going to fail prematurely and cost more to repair than a conventional transmission. These seem like trouble just waiting to happen from what I've seen and heard.

I'm having a big trouble with this brand new DCT In a kia ceed 2020. Switching to 2nd gear makes the car brake before entering the gear making a loud sound and sometimes 2nd gear disappear. Uphill or downhill the problem get worst and more dangerous. Now my brand new vehicle is in charge by Kia but after 10 days of work, they were not able to make it work properly. We'll see how long it will take to find the issue... I bought kia for reliability, maybe I have no luck with this brand...

DCT in this cars is a nightmare. Wait until it is out of warranty. Wallet breaker. Constant service visits, so many things can go wrong, from clutch to computer, then you have oil changes.... I have sold mine after 2 years, and go back to manual, no problems since. And they advertise better fuel economy, and I have proven myself that manual is at least 0.5 liters better than DCT.

I bought my 2020 Kia Forte GT December 2019, by November 2020 I started noticing jerking, and what felt like slipping of the transmission in bumper to bumper traffic, also when putting car in drive after a cold start. (Yes I do let my vehicle warm before driving)
Dealer told me that is normal, but to someone who is used to a traditional transmission, it was very far from normal 😂
I still own mine with 77k miles and it’s not as good as they make it out to be smh 🤦🏻‍♂️
Fyi make sure to change your transmission fluid every 30-40k miles, the ole Kia Warranty won’t cover repairs if maintenance wasn’t preformed to their standard (or so I’ve been told)…..
While I will say it is quite fast.
I am nervous of premature wear and tear to the transmission especially if you drive your car hard!

The same is true for regular manual transmissions as well, yet people routinely get 110,000-160,000 miles out them. The problem isn't partial slip. It is how the transmission is designed and programmed. The logic and actuation don't match up with a skilled manual transmission driver. Sure, it's quicker but not as talented.

DCT really is a great concept. My only real complaint is with the dry clutches. Many manufacturers such as Audi, VW, etc, use multi disc wet clutches which is far and away a better design. The next problem is is that like anything automotive, they design it as light and cheaply as possible. This design has the capability to be immensely durable, without adding a whole lot of weight, but they'll save $10 per transmission, which will cost you a new transmission in the medium to long run.

@HannahFortalezza the first two times was just premature wear of the clutch packs. I'm not sure if it was the ecu shifting funny and wearing it out or what. Then the third time the actuators broke, so it was stuck in gear. After that, they replaced the whole transmission under warranty. They put the updated 2023 model dct in, and it's been much better, but far from perfect. It'll still slip and shift funny from time to time. But I put almost 100k km on this transmission now, so it appears to be holding up. And I wouldn't worry about the warranty. As long as your car is stock they won't hassle you about it.
