    One of my most vivid childhood movie going experiences was when I went to see TERMS OF ENDEARMENT with my mother....I remember the shock and awe of my mother dealing with the fact that Debra Winger's character died....she was in complete shock.

    Thanks for posting this! I miss these guys. "Terms of Endearment" is probably my all-time favorite film, so I think it's one of the few times the Academy and I were totally in sync. MacLaine and Winger were both brilliant, but the edge goes to MacLaine (my favorite leading actress performance, period). Nicholson here gives his best performance - no-brainer to give it to him. The guys were too hard on Charles Durning, a great actor. "To Be or Not to Be" is a very underrated film. Durning was very funny, but Jeff Daniels should have been nominated, as should have Jerry Lewis in "The King of Comedy." 1983 was one of the great years for movies.

      @@kdohertygizbur I said he was very funny, not Oscar worthy. I think Jerry Lewis and Jeff Daniels deserved nominations in his place. Cheers.

    I agree with almost all of the Academy's chosen winners this year, perhaps a record number for me. With a handful of exceptions: I'd select Ingmar Bergman for Best Director, Debra Winger for Best Actress, "Over You" for Best Song, "The Return of the Jedi" for Art Direction, and "Never Cry Wolf" for Sound Mixing. I haven't watched any of the documentaries, but back then hardly anyone did.
    Worst nomination: "Betrayal" for Best Adapted Screenplay...although "The Big Chill" is also hot garbage and a rotten choice for top-tier categories.

      Agree completely with Return of the Jedi for Art Direction. Jabba's Palace and the Emperor's throne room are iconic sets.

    While I loved and miss both of these guys, I have to call Gene out a little bit. He chose Jack Nicholson despite admitting that he was a lead role, not a supporting role. However, next year he criticizes Haing S Ngor's nomination for being in the supporting and not the lead category. Although I agree with his vote in 1985 for Adolph Caesar, he was a little hypocritical there:) FWIW If I had a vote I would have voted for Rip Torn in 1984 and Adolph Caesar in 1985.

    As big a deal as "The Right Stuff" was at the time, it's very seldom seen or talked about now. It's "Terms of Endearment" that's lasted.

    • @flaccidusminimus2170
      @flaccidusminimus2170  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually, "The Right Stuff" remains a beloved film among audiences and critics, and has higher scores with both groups. There's also ample evidence of it being as widely seen as the other (not that any of this matters necessarily, if you prefer "Terms" that's fine).

    I can't believe the best performance by an actor from that year Al Pacino in Scarface wasn't even nominated.

    • @flaccidusminimus2170
      @flaccidusminimus2170  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's my favorite as well, but the exclusion was easy to believe at the time. "Scarface" was widely panned in 1983. Roger's 4 star review was an outlier. It would have been shocking had it received any Oscar nominations because most people hated it.

    The Big Chill was kind of a ripoff of The Return Of The Secaucus Seven by John Sayles.

  • @DoncoEntAgain
    @DoncoEntAgain ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I didn't like either of the lead actors in The Dresser (that theatrical acting style doesn't work on film) but I thought Tom Courtenay was particularly terrible. He literally pranced around the screen with his wrists bouncing like a camp stereotype. He should have been much more low-key and measured in contrast to Finney. This character is supposed to be a put-upon assistant but he's just as over-the-top as the pompous actor he's paired with. It was an embarrassing performance, and Gene sort of touched on that by talking about how he was just "reciting his lines."

    • @kdohertygizbur
      @kdohertygizbur 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I disagree, it was a mannered performance, yes, but "embarrassing", no
