Jesus, I didn’t realise how many great movies that were made in 1997. The Full Monty is very underrated. I haven’t seen “Wag The Dog” it’s now in my watchlist. De Niro and Hoffman… why haven’t I seen it! Such a good year: Boogie Nights, Men In Black, L.A Confidential, Full Monty, Titanic, Gattaca, Life Is Beautiful, The Game, Devils Advocate, The Borrowers, Donnie Brasco, As Good As It Gets, Good Will Hunting, Contact, Fifth Element, Seven Years In Tibet, Devils Own, Breakdown, Chasing Amy, Liar Liar, Jackie Brown, Starship Troopers, Disney’s Hercules, Cube, Con Air, Face/Off, Grosse Point Blank, Conspiracy Theory, Insomnia, Princess Mononkee, The Saint, Relic, The Lost Highway, Mouse Hunt, Simple Wish, Bean, Scream 2, Austin Powers, Flubber Jurassic Park: The Lost World, The Jackal, Air Force One, Anaconda… So many good movies!!
My top ten: 1. L.A. Confidential 2. Jackie Brown 3. Boogie Nights 4. Good Will Hunting 5. Donnie Brasco 6. Grosse Pointe Blank 7. Gattaca 8. Starship Troopers 9. Funny Games 10. Traveller I miss these two guys.
In 1997, unlike other years, I was lucky to live in walking distance to some movie theaters, so I saw quite a lot of these. I loved the Full Monty and LA Confidential and went to see both twice. Russell Crowe was just a little known actor at the time, and the latter film made me an instant fan. I think I saw Titanic only once in the theater, but I enjoyed that as well and immediately went out to get the soundtrack. Other films I saw in the theater and liked that year were In and Out, Air Force One, Men In Black, GI Jane, and Tomorrow Never Dies.

1997 was a fantastic year for films and I clearly recall watching this Siskel and Ebert episode when it first aired. My personal top 10: 1. LA Confidential 2. Princess Mononoke 3. Boogie Nights 4. Children of Heaven 5. Jackie Brown 6. Kundun 7. Gattaca 8. The Sweet Hereafter 9. Taste of Cherry 10. Amistad
My 1997 list - great year! 1. LA Confidential 2. Jackie Brown 3. Titanic 4. The Sweet Hereafter 5. Austin Powers (funniest movie of the year) 6. Hard Eight 7. Good Will Hunting 8. Boogie Nights 9. Donnie Brasco 10. Private Parts (narrowly over The Game)
I wish these guys were still around. Rest in peace, guys. I remember one episode of Siskel & Ebert when Siskel baited/forced Ebert into doing a voice impression of a celebrity because Ebert's voice impression was awful and embarrassing. It was hilarious but it just showed what a jerk Siskel was. You had to be there, HAHA.
1) LA Confidential 2) Boogie Nights 3) Jackie Brown 4) Waiting for Guffman 5)The Fifth Element 6) Hard Eight 7) The Game 8) Event Horizon 9) Lost Highway 10) Con Air
I really miss these two guys. I miss the days of watching them before the internet when you would still read movie reviews by critics and I would buy Ebert's and Leonard Maltins movie review books almost every year. I miss going to Blockbuster to pick out a movie to watch on the weekends or to a big film on opening weekend. Now that we have the internet and all of these streaming services for entertainment I can't imagine not having it but I can say this late 90s time period was a much better time period for the USA and our culture. Siskel and Ebert were pure class. The fact that they would dress up in tuxedos for their best of lists is awesome. I didn't always agree with them...I probably agreed with Roger more than Gene but I was always interested to hear what they had to say about the new movies. Very sad to know Gene only had less than two years to live at this point but didn't know it here obviously. Sad Roger had a lot of health problems and died relatively young as well. He was the best writer of all of the movie critics IMO and was a big influence on me. To anyone who wants to read great writing please google the Great Films- Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I have never read a review with more heart or insight into humanity and even Steve Martin praised it and said John Candy would be proud.
This was a banner year for me: I was 16 and I really got into renting movies that year. And I saw a number of films because of their recommendations. LA Confidential was my favorite film for years and Good Will Hunting wasn’t far behind. I saw In The Company of Men and The Sweet Hereafter and they are some of the most gut-wrenching films one will ever see (and on my all-time list). Wag The Dog is has fallen into obscurity sadly despite how much of a distracted reality we live in. The Ice Storm isn’t well known outside of the time of its release but it’s a stunning bit of period drama that needs wider recognition. Wag and Ice deserve rewatches as I’ve only seen them once. I disliked Boogie Nights because of how nihilistic and pointless it felt on first release, but I think I might need to rewatch it as I’ve become of a fan of PTAs work after seeing Hard Eight and Punch Drunk Love. Other films I need to see are Jackie Brown, The Full Monty and Eve’s Bayou. Titanic is overrated and one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. Other favorites from 1997 were Chasing Amy, Starship Troopers, Contact, Private Parts, Open Your Eyes (Abra Los Ojos) and Breakdown.
My top ten from that year… 1) LA Confidential 2) Good Will Hunting 3) Chasing Amy 4) In The Company of Men 5) The Sweet Hereafter 6) Starship Troopers 7) Contact 8) Private Parts 9) Open Your Eyes (Abra Los Ojos) 10) Breakdown
Definitely give Boogie Nights another go. It's not nihilistic IMO as much as it is a portrait of characters who simply refuse to see how downtrodden and hopeless their lives are. I haven't been a big fan of most of PTA's films although I fiercely respect them- the best for me are Boogie Nights and (obviously) There Will Be Blood.
The Game was okay but compared to Fincher’s previous effort Se7en it was a bit underwhelming in my opinion, sort of follows the same trend where the next film after the breakout is a bit of a slump, ie: Magnolia after Boogie Nights (both of which I still love btw), Midsommar after Hereditary etc.
The Game has gotten better with time and I've watched it several times over the years unlike many others on their list. I'm not a big Boogie Nights guy but I love Jackie Brown.

I'm glad both Siskel & Ebert placed Wag the Dog and In the Company of Men on their top ten list here. To me, these movies were the clear standouts for 1997. Overall, 1997 was a pretty good year for movies, I"m surprised I saw at least 8 of these movies I was stationed at Yokota Air Base, Japan.. it was one of the few times I actually saw some of these movies at the base theater, which are usually pretty bland compared to an off base theater. The only theater I went to in Tokyo was an Imax theater in Shinjuku I saw Mission to Mir the poster in the lobby was signed by one of the astronauts Norm Thagard. My list of the best movies of 1997 are 1. Wag the Dog 2. In the Company of Men 3. Contact 4. Gattaca 5. Boogie Nights 6. Titanic 7. Air Force One 8. Liar Liar 9. Men in Black 10. I was around in the "early days", and I don't share this memory of the "good old days". Internet in the very early days actually resemble the darknet of today - basically anything goes. The days of goats.ex and various BBS with all kinds of conspiracies and college students engaging in flame wars and petty bickering, and trivially initiated antagonism using racial, sexist and homophobic slurs was rampant. I don't think it was at all what people "remembered". On the other hand, if you mean the maturation of commercialism, then yes, I agree. Those were innocent times when the internet wasn't a big enough deal for the corporations to take over, yet.

As a lover of Japanese cinema, I found Maborosi to be a beautiful film if you have patience, but it doesn't have a great deal of substance. A lot of long, still, shots of landscapes, people and interiors. It's a cheap tactic designed to impart gravity to a scene where there may be done. Very simple story done at a very slow pace, and the ambiguity as to why her husband jumped on the train tracks is also a bit of a cheap storytelling tactic. Aesthetically it succeeds but on a storytelling level it really doesn't offer that much.

16:54 - Wasted sentiment unfortunately. Not only did "The Ice Storm" die at the box office, but it's doubtful that many Academy voters ever saw it. Flops almost never receive nominations in major categories. In contrast, Roger's choice "Eve's Bayou" grossed almost twice as much and even that one is somewhat obscure.
If Eve's Bayou had been from Miramax, and had been gifted with an Oscar campaign through them, and rewarded with Oscar nominations because of that, it would be a little different.

@Waxing Wampeter Lol, yeah, that was rather redundant, wasn't it. Though, in my defense, S&E often included films that weren't released in the particular year they were spotlighting. But myself, I always adhere to the listed production date, so it's a poor defense...

Eh GWH was predictable, "talented young man who doesn't know what to do for his future runs off to the opposite coast for love" is a worn out trope. Titanic's strength was making you care even though you know how it all ended before even seeing it.
@@plaidchuck I'd argue the same is true of GWH, albeit I did find the blue collar-ness portrayal a little bit overwrought. (On the other hand, the thing about Jack not climbing onto the piece of wood because it tipped over on the first try was, um... very annoyingly contrived and not very believable.)
Movies like Good Will Hunting and Forest Gump went from overrated to underrated, I agree that they shouldn't have been treated like The Godfather 2 or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest but it became trendy to hate them and treat them like they were trash movies which also wasn't fair. Good Will Hunting isn't a classic or anything but it's a good movie.
The ark of bullshit. lol. Yes, Goodwill Hunting has obvious ending but the writing is the best in years. And they mention Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, always a must lol. Titanic is glop.

Boogie Nights, Men In Black, L.A Confidential, Full Monty, Titanic, Gattaca, Life Is Beautiful, The Game, Devils Advocate, The Borrowers, Donnie Brasco, As Good As It Gets, Good Will Hunting, Contact, Fifth Element, Seven Years In Tibet, Devils Own, Breakdown, Chasing Amy, Liar Liar, Jackie Brown, Starship Troopers, Disney’s Hercules, Cube, Con Air, Face/Off, Grosse Point Blank, Conspiracy Theory, Insomnia, Princess Mononkee, The Saint, Relic, The Lost Highway, Mouse Hunt, Simple Wish, Bean, Scream 2, Austin Powers, Flubber Jurassic Park: The Lost World, The Jackal, Air Force One, Anaconda…
So many good movies!!
The 1990s overall was a great year for movies.
Wag the Dog is super prescient when you see how the media is handling the whole ukraine thing.

In what world is Flubber possibly a good movie?

In 1997, unlike other years, I was lucky to live in walking distance to some movie theaters, so I saw quite a lot of these. I loved the Full Monty and LA Confidential and went to see both twice. Russell Crowe was just a little known actor at the time, and the latter film made me an instant fan. I think I saw Titanic only once in the theater, but I enjoyed that as well and immediately went out to get the soundtrack. Other films I saw in the theater and liked that year were In and Out, Air Force One, Men In Black, GI Jane, and Tomorrow Never Dies.
What a terrific year for movies!
Completely agree with them about Danny DeVito. Really exciting, charismatic actor, always good to watch

This was when I was going to the movies every other week. More good movies than bad.

1. Boogie Nights
2. Titanic
3. Jackie Brown
4. The Sweet Hereafter (Canada)
5. The Fifth Element (France/ USA)

How could Siskel leave off Titanoc?!?!
Used to use Leonard Maltin book so much it was falling apart after two years

Wild that it was such a good year for movies that the most ICONIC movies of the year barely made top 10 for them, yet it still made sense
My top ten from that year…
1) LA Confidential
2) Good Will Hunting
3) Chasing Amy
4) In The Company of Men
5) The Sweet Hereafter
6) Starship Troopers
7) Contact
8) Private Parts
9) Open Your Eyes (Abra Los Ojos)
10) Breakdown
Definitely give Boogie Nights another go. It's not nihilistic IMO as much as it is a portrait of characters who simply refuse to see how downtrodden and hopeless their lives are. I haven't been a big fan of most of PTA's films although I fiercely respect them- the best for me are Boogie Nights and (obviously) There Will Be Blood.
Ebert gave Spawn a thumbs up? Interesting
Wow... that might be the least crossover they ever had in their Top 10s.
Boogie night has characters siskel has seen before, but not LA confidential?
No love for The Game? Wow. That's my third favourite film of '97, only behind Jackie Brown and Boogie Nights.
I agree. The Game was a underrated movie.
The Game has gotten better with time and I've watched it several times over the years unlike many others on their list. I'm not a big Boogie Nights guy but I love Jackie Brown.

Wag the dog was such a great film.
“On the web?" Man, I miss the 90s, when the internet was still innocent.

In many ways, streaming has corrected that disparity.

Also Ebert: I choose Titanic!
Personally I cannot stomach the sight of Matt Damon in anything.
Wow those tuxedos are awful!
Ebert looks like The Penguin lol

Titanic?! Surely it belongs on 10 worst list, not 10 best.
The Ice Storm was a bore, didn't deserve such a high rank that year. Easily name a dozen better films that year.
1997 and 1998 are good contenders for the worst years in movie history
Nah, that would be the current year. And every year after that…
the hell
Put down the pipe.
This was the last good year for movies. It all went to hell after 1997.
@Emilio Alvarez shit film
What an incredibly lame take. 1997 was the last good year for films? Are you in your 70s or something?
2007 was a solid year. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Juno, Ratatouille, Once, Sweeney Todd, Charlie Wilson’s War, Eastern Promises, Superbad, Grindhouse (your milage may vary on that one), 300.
1999, 2002, 2005 were all very good years as well.
@@langdonalger9219 ah, 1999, the year of the Middle Class White Guy Unsatisfied With His Cushy Job film: American Beauty, Fight Club, The Matrix, Office Space. (Tongue in cheek of course, all of those movies are great.)
“A president accused of gross sexual misconduct…” Nowadays is almost a Republican prerequisite.
'97 had so many: Contact, JB, 5th Element, Gross Pointe Blank, GWH, LA Conf, Kiss the Girls, Donnie Brasco, Cop Land, Princess Mononoke, the Spanish Prisoner, Rainmaker. Why settle for the worst-evers like Titanic and Eve's Bayou? Unwatchable dogsh_t.
Oh come on Titanic was good. Yeah you got sick of hearing about it at the time along with Dion's song but watch it again and it's still one of Cameron's best.
Omg.
'Eve's Bayou' was one of the WORST film ive seen in a long time. Like a really bad episode of the TV show 'in the heat of the night' imo.
I was bowled over how awful it was. The plastic overdramatic acting
the hamfisted editing
the characatures of everybody involved
Wow.
Where is face off, starship troopers, tomorrow never dies, Air Force one, and con air? They hate action films 🥴🥴🥸. Half of their films they pick no one has ever heard of them. 🥴
