Jay is a super nice guy in person. He sometimes comes to the MoPar Spring Fling. His show “Jay Lenos Garage” is the best show of its type and I love the fact that he actually DRIVES his cars and shares them with the public so others can see and appreciate them. Jay has done a tremendous amount to preserve antique automobiles that would have never been restored to working condition otherwise and educate the public on their history and the engineers and designers behind them.
Dave and Norm would always make it a point to tell people how Leno was #1 at the time and Dave always remained consistent when acknowledging Leno's standup prowess. What happened between them didnt take away his ability and talent. Im sure Leno respected Letterman for choosing the host path early on and was influenced by him.
I generally can’t stand the style of rapid one liners, even Gilbert Gottfried, but it’s undeniable that Leno’s observations still hold up as some of the most accurate today
Maybe I’m too young approaching 30 here but like I’m half way through and haven’t managed a single laugh and I came here to see why he was such a legend I will listen to some more though. To be clear this isn’t hate I respect him for his accomplishments maybe I’m missing it or it’s just not me but I shall try more
The humor is too cheesy and mainstream. I don't get it either. I guess his technical delivery is great, but whatever. I don't find Seinfeld funny either.

Dude this was 40 years ago, obviously what people consider funny changes over time. Whoever your favorite comedian is will be considered by many to be boring 40 years from now.
maybe that was the joke? j/k i feel like jay was the comic at the end of an era before things changed. so he became misunderstood in the comedy community. i grew up with jay as host so i always thought he was a great host until he wasn't. not so much as a comic.
The old (and original -c1966) Circus Maximus showroom. Legendary venue throughout it's existence-Frank Sinatra jumped ship from the Sands to here in '68.
Just watched Joe Rogan and Louis C.K. commending Jay Leno on how great a stand-up comic he was before hosting the Tonight Show. I thought, really? I must've missed something. So, I searched for "Jay Leno stand-up" and picked this. And Leno stunk. Boo=boring-as-fuck! Couldn't get past 2:00 of this video.
Comedy from 30 years ago always sucks when you watch it today. When you compare it to today's comedy, they've already pushed through like 30 years more boundaries it just will always struggle to compare. Mind you, it's also hard to make clean comedy hilarious. And he never would have been given his opportunity as a dirty comic. I didn't mind this. I chucked. but didn't belly laugh.
Are there any Jay Leno stand-up material performed & recorded at venues allowing for greater freedoms of speech? Gonna have a look-see. Back in a min.. And if you know or find any, pls. to kindly mention their links here. ... I'd much appreciate it.
The distance between the bottom of your nose to the top of your lip is the same distance from the top to the bottom of your visible eye. And from the bottom of your lip to the bottom of your chin is twice that length. Unless you’re Jay Leno, in which case it’s about 7.
The jokes are not outdated. He is actually super funny here. People just have a much lower social iq now -- mostly due to internet pron and social media. Edit: Actually to say lower social iq and understanding is inaccurate, more accurate is to say they have absolutely no social iq or understanding of universal human values. This is a great set.
@@HfgotGjtjtno the jokes are outdated and so is the style and delivery. You can give the social IQ hypothesis a rest. It doesn’t make you special to have a poor taste in comedy.
Looking for his old standup cuz of CK and Rogan talking about it.

Thanks for that Jay.
What a wonderful treat to see this.
This is great it’s just like his monologue on the tonight show no wonder he was so good he had perfected it for years
.....well, Norm liked him
Lol! Mos def!!

Well, this act sucks, so I don't know what the fuck they are talking about.
Norm said every comedian was the best all time. He said countless times that letterman was the greatest too
Jay is doo doo
Great job Jay. You’re really funny! Keep it up
This was like 43 years ago dude
One day this guy can have best car collection in the world
Jat Leno is very talented and paid his share of dues coming up through the ranks of comics of his time. He has good morals too.
Tell that to Conan O’Brien
i dont dislike this. however this type of humor is very nested in the time its from
What is this type of humor? I feel like a reverse boomer watching this.

I came here for the same reason. I have not laughed once. I never thought him or letterman were funny.

I know that’s how I ended up here, I just heard Norm say that and searched for “Jay Leno Old Standup”

crap stand up , good chat show host , brilliant car programme host

Ive heard Jay do this bit a decade later on Letterman. Ya back then only the ppl in the theatre heard it so it wasnt "old material."

The host is Merv Griffin.
I wonder if Jay has a 1972 Pinto in his car collection?

Should have just said "no" to NBC to replace Conan.
People say Jay Leno is a great stand up comic. I haven’t seen it yet
agreed, this was awful
That's why I came here. I keep hearing about how great he was before he was famous, but I've yet to see anything even slightly above average.
Since I only hear this from fellow comedians, I wonder if it kind of a sarcastic running joke among the standup comedians
Shane then you must be the problem

Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy had just started doing stand-up around this time
No one cares
I just don’t get why so many successful comedians love Jay’s standup. His jokes are terrrrrible

He talks about spitting now you can get arrested for spitting lol
He also talked about an exploding gas tank and now he had a gas explosion in his face.
What the fuck... they had X-ray machines back then??.. or did he mean metal detectors??
