You have a wonderful mindset. The mindset that told you to go to Japan - many people would say "that would never work" - is the same mindset that tells you to train such high mileage. And in both cases, you're succeeding brilliantly. I also "just went" to Japan 20 years ago and lived there for 3 years and I visit 1-2 months every summer since. Part of me regrets not staying forever. Love that you're going to interesting locations like canal city to do your race report stuff. You're always showing off how great Japan is and I really appreciate that.
Hey Jake, I also struggled with really serious iron deficiency this year, for 2 months I couldn't run a slow 5km without stopping because I was out of breath. I ran many halfmarathons before, but this year I was so weak that I ran my slowest halfmarathon ever - 1:58. My PB from 3 years ago was 1:40. I found out that I have an iron deficiency and started taking iron supplements and it's gotten so much better. On November 1st I managed to run a massive HM PB of 1:23. I hope it will get better for you too, cheers from Slovakia 👋
Thanks for sharing man and good job with the HM! That’s class to hear it can make that much of a difference. So if you ran a 17min PB once it was sorted… does that mean I’ve got a 2:00 marathon on the cards??!
@@RanToJapan Thank you, honestly I didn't believe it myself 😂My goal was to run under 1:30 but I was running under 4:00/km and I thought I was gonna hit the wall, but I just kept running haha. It probably depends on how serious your iron deficiency is, but I think you could definitely run much faster than 2:18 😁
Just found your channel, Jake. Giving me serious nostalgia. I lived in Japan for 4 years and moved back to the UK this year. I did the Fuji marathon last year - would recommend! I lived right on the Tama river so all my long runs were done there! Also a fellow Gooner. Thoroughly enjoying those retro shirts 😍
That’s quality mate, a Gooner and Tama river fan. It’s a niche combo 😂 I’ve seen some vids from the Fuji marathon and looks unreal. I’ve still not been to Mt. Fuji so that’d be a great way to check it out!
@ very niche combo indeed mate 😂. Recognise that blue bridge anywhere! Definitely a chance to kill two birds with one stone to go and see Mt Fuji. Incredible scenes. There’s a nasty hill at the halfway mark which might scupper any pb plans (especially if all long runs are on the Tama river 😂). Miss Japan so much. What a country. Do not miss waking up/staying up to watch Arsenal at all hours! Keep up the great work mate. Loving following along 👍
Another banger video, love that the Q&A started off with tons of people asking about mileage and the answer basically ended up being the equivalent of 'f*** no, gotta run more, train harder, not smarter, and once I sort out my iron deficiency, I gotta start looking into 300k weeks' Also epic looking shopping mall! Great job at Fukuoka again, the potential is now even higher
Yhhh that pretty much sums it up… I’m slightly stubborn if you can’t tell 😂 High mileage til I die! Cheers man, enjoy those Sydney running routes - I’m sure it’ll feel unreal after slogging it round the streets of Tokyo for so long
Great video Jake! I live in Southeast Asia and did most of my training in hot & humid conditions and where running is typically seen as leisure and not performance-based. I had signed up for the Kobe Marathon and boy when i showed up to the start line last month, I was taken aback by how fast even the citizen runners there dash out of the start line! Even at 10k & 21k, they were still holding on! Where I’m from, I found most people slowdown from 10k onwards for a half-marathon! I told myself NOT to follow their style because i thought they’ll burn out towards the 3/4 mark (surprisingly, I found ample space to run at the 32km mark onwards because there was really a lot of burnout and that day was actually hot and humid for the Japanese runners - but not for me!). I did had cramps towards the 38-39km mark but that’s because the route went up a steep highway bypass….but I pushed through all the way to the end and ended up with a 12 minute PB! I’m not fast, but happy to achieve sub-3:30! But I agree with you - it seem they really value time on feet and they have such amazing support systems for running - from the equipment, to the pre & post race management and of course - the intense carbo load! And yes, their principle that More Mileage = King resonates with me! I am flying back to Japan in Feb to run another marathon - their running culture is so good! Wish I could train there for even longer! PS - Canal City is Awesome! One of my favourite malls in Fukuoka!
good to hear that you found the problem, definitly get a doc recommend you a suplemment and check your levels regularly, iron can be a pain in the ass to supplement well.
I'm not claiming to be an expert, but iron supplements don't always work that well. The problem is absorption - you can put lots of iron in your body but getting your body to absorb it is the hard part. Look at foods high in iron in addition to the supplements, as they are often absorbed better.
Funny to be happy for someone to have an iron deficiency 😂 But really glad you made that discovery! About the heart rate, the Polar Verity Sense is an absolute game changer!
"audentes Fortuna iuvat" - Latin for "Fortune favors the brave!" as my coach Al Cantello used to say. Bill Rodgers used to say, "well, sometimes you gotta' go a little crazy out there."
One tip, get yourself a full blood work every 2 months at least, It's cheap and there could be many more easy to fix problems, like Vit D, B12, Iron, Testosterone etc..... btw don't overdoit with iron it is toxic in higher amounts so be careful and full send with your training, good luck
Yeah think I will do going forward, wanna monitor the ferritin level especially to make sure it’s increasing and then stays up. But true could be worth checking everything else too
FWIW, I felt sluggish for a long while last year and, sure enough, my annual ningen dock (I live in Japan too) showed I was iron-deficient. So I started taking a supplement and felt much better after just a couple of weeks. Not sure, but I suspect running for weeks in Japan's brutal summer heat and humidity contributed to the deficiency.
Are there any Ekidens you would recommend for a team of foreign masters runners? Last year my 50+ team set the record at a famous 200 -mile relay in the US and were always looking for new challenges.
4:15 is there more that recommended? You can consume whatever you can deal with - depending on intensity, your weight and what you can bring with yourself/get somewhere on a distance. But 100g of carbs in hour is not a lot at all
Hey buddy, love your channel! Can you do a video on Japanese anti-chafing products and strategies... I'm thinking with that kind of high mileage they have a trick or two up their sleeves 😂
Hey mate, I’m not a doctor but look into an actual iron infusion it’ll be a lot more effective than supplements. They’re aren’t cheap though, good luck!
with 250k weeks, how many shoes do you go through? Of course it will depend on the shoe, but generally how many km do you want to get out of a single training pair?
Lactate isn't that important for a marathon runner than for a short sprinter. In theory. Yes you need your lactate threshold that will say what your best pace would be, but it might be better for you to not know it. (At least it seems like it, and how you think)
yea but you COULD BE BETTER with more science. that is just a fact. and me too! i am an aging triathlete who keeps it super old school and still manages lots of amateur wins at age 48. to keep it up i think some science may be in order, because i am FAR from done winning!

The best North American marathoner of all time, aka. the 280km/week king Cam Levins, seems to be doing alright all these years later! And funny you say that in my training group there’s actually a bunch of 35-45 year olds who are still running sub 2:25 marathons 😂 Their bodies seem to be handling it ok…
Yes! Not to mention the 42-year old Tadesse Abraham from Switzerland who just ran 2.04:40 (5th place) in Valencia. He runs about 200K a week. Your body will tell you in a subtle way when and how to change things before it's too late. The art is in listening to it and adapting on time in the right way.
I'd love to see you run it negative splits next time. You pain threshold is nuts.
That’s the plan for sure! Only problem is it’ll mean running the entire race solo since negative splits haven’t been discovered yet in Japan…
You've got a real knack for vlogging as well, loved this one
Appreciate it!

I’m fairly new to the channel and enjoying watching the past videos. What was the issue with your groin in the Gold Coast?
Some kinda muscle/tendon strain that kept coming up in marathon sessions. Been smashing the S&C and seems to have helped
@ I done something similar last week during a 10 mile run. Got a physio appointment Tuesday to try and get to the bottom of it.
@ for me it was all about strengthening that area with the resistance band - could be worth looking online for exercises they’re pretty simple

Good shout, I actually found a place in Tokyo that does them so gonna try and get an infusion booked asap
Red lined during the my last half marathon (was sick a week before) and achieved a pb. But man, my body was sore for days and days
Running with an iron deficiency is just a new approach to altitude training 😆
great video

What's your biggest km per week? Have you ever reached 400?
And also you never run on some hilly routes?
Notwithstanding the possible iron deficiency do you think that this training approach is sustainable in the long term?
There’s only one way to find out…
No - Japanese runners have no longevity. Burnout faster. Pick the method you want though!

The Japanese guys do enough work as it is, you can’t expect them to sit at the front of a pack as well!
You should try and do a colab with Dr Andy Galpin and ket him assess your bloodwork etc
You should try to do a COLAB WITH DR andy galpin, shud be damn fun
How did you realise you had an iron deficiency? And that it wasn’t anything else.
My symptoms were ticking all the boxes and I know marathon runners are especially susceptible so my 250k weeks put me right in the danger zone
@@RanToJapanOk, thanks for the answer👍🏼
