I love your videos! I am getting a Brittany puppy and learning the information before the puppy arrives is absolutely wonderful. I can start my Brittany off on the right paw. Keep them coming :o)
Very good! I like that you are using clicker training and like the way you explained how to add a cue and when to add it. That is correct. I am a professional certified clicker trainer - Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner - so am tuned into these things. Keep up the good work!
Great video! I have never used a clicker, but I have used "yes" as a marker during training (essentially used Michael Ellis' system) and I found it very effective. I am 100% confident a clicker would work equally well if not better, but I was curious if it works equally well when marking behaviors from a distance? For example, are there any issues with the dog noticing the click when they are 30 yards away and asked to sit? Thanks!!
We rely a lot on body language as well, using postures and hand signals for more advanced training. Some trainers vocalize more than others, which also works, but we tend to prefer a more quiet approach if possible. We use a whistle for more advanced training as well.
We use the clicker throughout all of our training. I think it would be more accurate to say we incorporate other methods of reinforcement, like a whistle or voice command. The clicker "marks" the desired behavior so the dog starts to understand what is being "asked" of them. The more ways a dog learns to do something, the more consistent the behavior will become.
how long will you continue to use the clicker? will you eventually phase it out and replace it with a whistle or just the voice command? do you use the clicker for all your training? basically using it to say good?
Chad probably used puppy kibble. Any treat that is small enough for the puppy to eat quickly works well. If the treat is too big it will take them awhile to chew it and turn their focus back to you.
Great demonstration on clicker training. I'm curious though why you do not call the puppy's name instead of whistling? Or at least call his name, whistle then the command Hear...
I have a German wirehaired pointer puppy and I'm planning on getting pheasants in my backyard coop and he will see them everyday is that OK or will he think hunting's a game is is it a good idea
Minimum 8 weeks but 9-10 is just as good if not better depending on individual puppy. Around this age is when they learn dog language the best and if taken too early can create dog aggression due to misunderstandings. Insecure dogs that stays when confident puppies moved out can help make them a bit more solid. Puppies at 6 weeks don't have enough antibodies either and can risk more infections during it's lifetime. They still nurse at this age alongside with solids and they need that for a healthy development. Same goes for cats but there they should not leave at 12 weeks earliest due to antibodies and social interaction.
@jay Mac No. A blue tick is not a nickname of a GSP. Plus GSP's markings are considered 'roan' not ticked. A blue tick coonhound is a completely different breed
I recommend starting EVERYTHING you ever wish to do with your pup AS SOON AS you get your pup. Don’t wait on anything. Every seed you plant now will bring you rewards later. They may not perform perfectly, but with consistency they will simply amaze you with what they are capable of. I started my pup at 9 weeks on wings. Integrated all of the basic commands: Come, Heel, Sit, Stay, Lay down, Whoa!, Steady.... and used hand signals with all of them. Later at five or six months, I added the whistle for Come, Whoa, Right, and Left, but should have implemented it earlier and added more to the mix. Sure made things easier in the tall grass and out in the water.
Introduction to gun fire? I would not attempt that til after they have drive to fetch a dummy every time and stay focused on that. Easier to introduce gunfire right and a hell of a lot harder to cure gun shyness. @@driftless1870

Looking forward to the selection process of our GSP from Chad and Tracy. Not sure I ever had anxiety, but I do now. @@willowcreekkennels

At what age do you start implementing this exercise?

How often do you train? Once a day? A few times a week?

Best food for a puppy that age . ? What do you use ? Thanks
What age do you recommend taking a puppy home? At the end of 7 weeks or 8 weeks? Thanks!!!
Dave Armento Sorry if I am not who you wanted to answer ,but, I believe it's fine to take it after 6 weeks...
Dave Armento In Minnesota there is a law that requires licensed breeders to wait until after 8 weeks to send puppies home.

a GSP can be liver and white patched and ticked if theres a light ticking so says my akc registration
Looks like you were wiping your hand on something for the pup to lick off...... what were you putting on your hand?
She’s 9 months old now, and I was wondering if it would be good to start using a whistle now?
