I just build this with minor differencies, first of all I didn't have all exact same components but very close enough and second, I did read comments and made my own conclusions. I used IRFP 460; 5,6KOhm 5W resistor from Drain to 10KOhm potentiometer, 10KOhm 1/4 or 1/2 Watt resistor (not quite sure which one) from Gate to Source and 6 Amp diode. This worked quite smoothly, however I did notice that using with voltage screen which shouldn't draw current much: Original voltage from transformer to voltage adjuster was ~21 Volts but with 3-wire voltage screen this voltage dropped to +16 Volts maximum. I did check with multimeter also. I'm not professional enough to explain why does this happen. However I did order a couple voltage/amperage reading screens so whenever they'll arrive I will put one of them in test and check what kind of effect it has with this application. Ps. Good video, probably best small voltage divider guiding video also with few components. Pss. Everyone who reads rhis: Remember passive heatsink big enough or active cooling also with resistors which are capable to prosess excess current and heating up! 😄
My opinion is that the Pot turns down in ohms counter clockwise. I measured this on 50Kohm Pot. This is a voltage divider that needs lowest ohms to begin with for the gate, for lowest voltage, as the Pot is R2 + R 1 from left to right. The .22 ohm resistor is providing the source volts for the pot with the ohms for R2 to ground, for gate volts. One turn to zero on pot C.C. will be a short as there is no minimum resistor as going to ground. ! E volts out = Beginning DC volts times R2 / R2 + R1. Add R3 as to left end of Pot to ground. The MOSFET is G D S , as from left to right. It also depends on which way pot is facing you as per which end is R2 as connected to ground! R2 volts to Ground is Gate volts applied. Many semiconductors have been damaged by not having proper minimum resister in series with Potentiometer.
Is it ok to conenct the input of a 220v to 24ac transformer rectified with a rectifier bridge and smoothed out using a 3300uf cap to this circuit and use as a voltage regulator?

Hola.

Using a .22 ohm, 5 wattt resistor is insane. You might as well just use a wire. If you have a 100 v input, and try to drive 10 amps at a much lower voltage, that puny little heatsink will not be enough and the transistor will overheat and fail. The 10k G-S resistor is completely unnecessary. Plus, the input most certainly is NOT 16 volts. It's at least 18, and I very much suspect it's more like 24. It's not a good look when you don't even know what you are showing.
The circuit is in no way a voltage "regulator." It is nothing but a simple source follower. The output voltage will change with output load current and input voltage. There would be variation from unit to unit and moderate temperature sensitivity. A transient short circuit on the output could result in gate-source voltage high enough to destroy the FET if the input voltage was high enough and wasn't pulled down by the overload.
@@d614gakadoug9 u seem pretty knowledgable, so i wanna ask, does this mean that if I use a 15V pulsating dc as the input it wont be able to regulate it and keep it at a constant 12V if I set it so?
But don't use lage voltage difference between input and output. Power dissipation will be too high for the FET to handle it. For high power Buck converter is much better but more complex.
