5 years laters, me trying to revive my Wii U. Thanks for the video man it helped a lot
No problem 👍
this video was very helpful. i just bought art academy on the wii u since it was on discount and that game was 5000 mb. luckily my brother had a 8 gb flash drive so i tried it and it worked.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it helped.
Bought PNY 64GB sd card at best buy on clearance. Will this card work properly? I'm not sure of the exact specs other than the fact it is PNYand 64GB. According to what I've seen, I basically just need the SD card reader and I'm good to go?
TofuTehSurvivor Yeah make sure you get an adapter that is compatible with SDXC.
Wii-U in 2015 "2 TB External USB Hard drives are really expensive right now"
Adding storage to PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2020 "Hold my beer"
lol yeah
I just tested my 7.52 gb flash drive and after formatting it it actually worked. I am getting Xenoblade Chronicles X and I know that takes up a lot of space. I plan to get a 64 GB flash drive. Will using a flash drive make memory on it process slower or will it process just fine like the wii u's internal storage?
This advice should be helpful... I've got a hard drive or two that were meant to back up shows on DVR but ended up being ignored in favor of just deleting viewed episodes like normal people, so hopefully that sticks. Otherwise I'd need to shuffle 10 GB files every time I want to play a game not on the system itself...
Will the 128gb usb drive work fine using it in my computer and wii u
+Alex Jay The Wii U uses a different file format so you cant use it on pc without reformatting it.
+Four Ninja Toads How do you transfer wii u game data to copy on a wii u sd card?
If you have a broken computer under 2tb of storage you can remove the hard drive and buy SATA ADAPTER so your Wii U can accept it SATAS are like 5-30$ depending if is a 2.0 or a 3.0 that’s what a got a sata and a computer hard drive and it works well is 500 gb and now is full of games(Wii u is modded) for free games :)
I decided to use my old laptop's HDD as an external storage for my Wii U, then I bought a case with a Y cable. It worked like a charm... for a couple months. My Wii U eventually got errors whenever I turned it on with the HDD plugged in. Nothing I did fixed it. No choice left, I formatted it. Worked again, got the same error after a couple months again.
I tried buying a new case with an external AC adapter. It worked like a charm... for a little bit longer. Then... same error. Again. Tried formatting the HDD. Same thing.
I'm nearly giving up and resorting to the system memory alone. Absolutely not sure about giving an USB-adapted SD card a shot.
Sounds like its just a bad drive tbh, i'd try another one
I insert my 64gb sandisk sd card and after deciding to format get "checking usb storage device" indefinitely.
+SCP-1048 Builder Bear try formatting the sd card on a pc first and only insert the sd card while the Wii U is turned off.
did you ever manage to fix this?
Four Ninja Toads If I lost my flash drive filled with wii u games, can't I buy another flashdrive & redownload all my games that I previously purchased from nintendo eshop?
general mosquito : having the exact same problem now 3 years later . What did you do ?
@@ajdoyle9559 dont use windows to format use gui format
I'm getting a wii u next month so this was helpful but out curiosity I heard if you use a thumb drive/USB stick it can only over right save data so many times. That's what the nintendo site said
Hi, so how much a storage do I need? I saw there is a 36, 64 and 128. I don't play much digital games.
thx!
+gao gaigar I would go with a 32GB if you don't play them much.
Everytime I try using my SD card reader and so fourth it always says ERROR right when it is finished mine is 32gb HELP!!!!!!!
SagaXL still waiting for help?
thats exactly what happens to mine ,ahem...HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s been 4 years and you still didn’t get any help lol
5 years, wondering if you got the help?
U fix?
Have you tried downloading directly to that thumb drive from the Wii U? Another video was saying the data has to be transferred from an SD card and/or via PC.
Sorry I'm 7 years late but how do you format a USB thumbstick when you get it for storing your purchased eShop virtual console games? Also what size should I get I want to buy almost all the games on the virtual console especially most of the Wii games.
Maybe you should get at least 2 gb because vc games don’t take up a lot. But if you are buying games like Wii as well then you should get at least 12 gb.
Can I put a micro SD card into a SD card adapter and put it at the front of the Wii u?
+anakin cheng pretty much that's what this video is about.
So, after you format the usb thumb drive, can you unplug it and plug it back in whenever you want, or you have to do anything before unplugging it?
I remember having to turn the wii u off before unplugging it.
did you have any problem with the thumb drive later? what capacity can I use with this method and what make and model you recommend using? I'm interest in this option because I want something cheap.
I have a question. My thumb drive will not format, help me? Im using the one you're using, the transcend one. I plugged the sd card into the slot, put it in my wii u and i tried to format it. the circle just keeps spinning and its not working
Is it safe to plug in the sd card reader with your wii u games saved onto the sd card into your computer?
+skyguys I don't think your computer would be able to read it.
Would you mind puttin a link or tellin me what the name of your silicone jacket is? I like how it covers the bottom and the ones that I'm finding on Amazon don't cover the bottom, too
I think I bought this at Tmart.com
im using the same SD card thumb drive as you, with a 16GB SD card, yet it wont find it when i try to format it. Can you help me with this problem?
Okay so i just bought a SD card and a SD card reader but my problem is that, on the pc i format to fat32 and follow all the steps like it tells me but once i plug it in to my wii u it no longer reads it, so i have re-format it again? So i do but then once i plug it into my computer it ask to format since windows doesn't recognize it. Any answers to this?
What SD card reader are you using?
did you have problems related to power consumption while running some games from the sd card?
haven't had issues playing Windwaker.
Thanks man this helped out a lot!
The Elite Whale You are welcomed. Please let us know how everything works out.
So if you have a USB Hardrive & if you have a physical version of a game with DLC can you transfer it?
My thumb drive does not work. Everyone I try to launch ww which was downloaded on the thumb drive it crashes? Any way around this, would a ad card reader be more reliable? Also if you were ever to update the system would't it reformat your storage device this loosing all data??
did you download from the eshop?
Every time I try to format my ad card it just says "checking USB storage device and nothing happens
i honestly just need something for game data so i can have more save files for twilight princess HD. i like being able to just replay the game and i want to be able to start new adventures with out having to delete older saves.
Me to i want to download terraria
Guys. Please PLEASE use sandisk endurance sd cards. It doesn't even have to be Sandisk (I use sandisk tho.) It can be samsung or some other brand. BUT PLEASE GET ENDURANCE CARDS. Normal cards only last around one year, but an endurance will go atleast 5 years upgrading to endurance will be so worth it in the long run anyways
should i use a 128 gig micro sd card (sandisk high endurance) in a usb adapter or is that unreliable
YES PLEASE.
@@user-oq3wx3pj4i periodt
Is it possible to use an external harddrive just like the USB ,, thinking there is a lot more space on that and s cheaper ????
Any limit to the size of the sd card used when you use the reader method like the 32 gb limit on the front slot?
+Miguel Melgoza The USB limit is 2TB.
I really like your gamepad
So you don't recommend the external hard drives that use Y connectors?
I have been using an 1TB external HDD with a "Y" USB cable for a year and I have no problems.
I've a questions
Can i copy some games from my USB to another USB and i used theme on the same Wii U?
+X i_Chaos_xX You should be able to do that as long as its on the same Wii U.
Cool thanks alot bruh ^^
Happen to know a way for me to get a Twilight Princess HD save on to my Wii U? :3
Without Soft modding..
Hello guys
Dont know if you can help me please. I have Hachi and now I cannot play any game. I did the CBHC
I am storing the games in a 128gb sd card (in a USB pen adpater) and using my 32gb as "vehicle". Tried to install the games, it crashes as soon as I run the game or states there is storage space problem (tried with NAND and it states the same error but this time insted of usb memory it says system memory). Also, N64, Ds games and all of those, after installing they just appear in the menu in a unkown format, do I need an emulator to play them? I was so happy to homebrew the console, spend 7 euros in the game to hack it and I cannot play one single game in the console
We just got a second Wii U for the house and want to transfer a couple game save files from the original Wii U to the new Wii U. Can we just copy the 2 files on the sd card via usb adapter and move them to the new Wii U? i keep hearing that only an entire system transfer is possible, not just a couple game save files.
+Donny Hightops I believe that is true, you must do a systems transfer because the games are tied to the console.
Can I transfer game save files to the thumb drive and what specific thumb drive did you use in this video?
Unfortunately no.
I tried to put my SD card on my Wii u and it just says "the device inserted on the SD card slot cannot be used" so what can I do?
Use the card reader. On the Wii U the sd card can only be used to save certain things depending on the game.
I Would Like To Known If You Can Transfer All Nintendo GameCube game from the GameCube memory card to the Nintendo Wii and SD card so that way it could be played on the Wii U
Michael Andry That's IMPOSSIBLE
I'm considering the option of using my brand-new SanDisk 64 GB SD card (with a USB card adapter, of course) as external storage for my Wii U. Can anybody tell me if it works, and whether or not it might get power issues for any game?
I have a small USB stick i got at target. I noticed running Mario kart 8 on the digital version it takes longer to get to the lobby room compared to disc. When I get to the lobby, half the people voted already. Is it because of the USB drive I have? Message my twitter @jrbowling1997 thanks.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME??
I moved a few Virtual Console games into my usb flash drive (it's 1GB...yeah only 1GB) and you know...I kinda want to move them back. But when I try to move my games back into the Wii U memory, an error pops up that says "Some software could not be moved"
Can anyone help me???
+Pablo's Combo's I believe the games are tied to the console so you cant download on one console and play them on another.
Will this work with a 64gb flash drive?
I believe that is too big
What a second, if we need an extenal drive with its own power source then I would take it that using any SD cards with an USB adapter or any thumb drives will not work since its need electricity because its going thru the Wii U's USB port?
They require different amounts of power. Best bet is buy an external hard drive with its own power supply.
@@FourNinjaToads Thanks for the reply. Sorry I miss the power cable going to the Pny device. Anyway I don't know if you know this but many public libraries carry Nintendo games I use WorldCat but there are others...
@@peterro9998 There are some card readers that do not require extra power. I have a video somewhere.
How would i transfer my art academy atelier drawings onto my 64 GB SD card
So when I do this with a ad card reader tell ps me I need more power what should I do
+WizardMaster12 the sd card reader I used didn't need more power, what are you using?
What should I do
If some madman wanted to use an eight TB external hard-drive and partition it into 4 2-TB drives, would that work?
I don't think that would work.
Can I just put the memory card in the Wii U as soon as I get it?
Nice video!
Do you think this is reliable? Because I would not like, that one day I want to play a game that is saved in sd reader and it's been erased, deleted or simply not working.
Jose M I would call this more reliable because it has no moving parts like a hard drive does. Games you can always redownload, but you would lose your game saves.
Thanks!
Also if I buy physical frames and need an updat can I you the de as space to safe
Do you know if the 64 GB low profile flash drive works? I clicked on your hyperlink to Amazon and it brought me to the 32 GB version, which you have tested and confirmed works. Do you know if 64 GB version on the tab works?
Alan C. Matthew Cangelosi tried it and he said it worked.
Alan C. I thought you meant the sd card. I have not tested that like you mentioned so I wouldnt know.
I just bought the 64 GB flash drive. Hopefully it works.
Alan C. let us all know how it works.

Do I have to delete everything off of my Wii u
Have now some useful information thanks 😃
Was messing around last night with two 64gb flash drives and got the error that you can't have two usb connected.
I think it only allows 1.
How do I save games off the eshop directly to my sd cards memory instead of my system memory?
There is a slot in the wii u that says "sd card" not usb storage device. How do I save games to that? I cant even MOVE them to it
Hey just wanted to check up and ask if you've had/got any problems with USB Flash Drives after all these years... The Nintendo site says it isn't advised and will/would stop functioning over time (like yeah no shit 🤣 but the way they say it seems like it's pretty bad) but I don't want to get a massive External HDD like I do for my PS4/XbonerX when I only plan on putting some Virtual Console games and possibly 1 or 2 Wii U games (depending if Physical Prices are much more than the Digital ones 🤷) on it
An HDD would just be overkill and even a cheaper one (like 500GB) is just unnecessary and still probably big (also would like to avoid using any sort of Mechanical Drives on the thing... I sure as shit ain't buying an SSD for a Wii U of all things in 2021 haha)
I never had any issues, but can't say that I used them for very long.
@@FourNinjaToads All good, well I just found a Black (important since it makes the Console 🤷) USB that's 16GB just SITTING ON THE FLOOR 🤣 I wacked that in and have an Extra 14GBs available so I'll use that for now, I'll download some new stuff from the Virtual Console next week and just keep an eye on things and see how it goes 👍

you can format on your PC
How do you free up space on space memory I deleted all the game to download one and it says I need to clear space

Can you get a 64gb of the smaller sd will it work
mozboy76 this card reader works with microsd also
how do you use a 1000gb 2.0 usb drive on the wii u

RETROCRATIC TV no you cant

When you were first downloading WW on the progress screen it said "USB Storage Device."

how come that I put in my sd card and it doesent read anything

I really don't know why Nintendo didn't just make a bigger hard drive. Is it possible to do that?
DisasterLordZack just use an external hard, it's the best option. Honestly just get a Switch. RIP Wii U.
Can the Switch play Wii U games?
DisasterLordZack No.
Thank you for your help :)
No worries!
No option for me. The WiiU already got an SD slot and the system does not support it? Well done Nintendo. I resold my WiiU because I am dissappointed by the fact that the system itself does have an SD slot but wont accept it as an external storage device. Fuck off Nintendo, really.
