  • A film on how easy and inexpensive it is to put on a new leather gaiter on the gear stick of a 2001 Jaguar X Type 2.5 V6 Manual Petrol. I know there are loads of videos like this but each car is different.

    Thank you very much for this video, I will do the same by myself! Very interesting, why Jaguar, such a high-quality and prestigious company, economized on this item...:)

      The answer may be that Jaguar was owned by Ford at the time - and they are notorious bean counters. However, the gaiter did last 17 years so that is not bad service.

    Great video, I installed mine yesterday, top tip about cutting through the staples too. It must be a factory done thing, tho I think mine needs re stapling as it’s a bit loose.

      I ended up putting double sided tape in to stop it popping open.

    Thanks for the very helpful video. I've just replaced mine but found the upper frame didn't hold the new leather shroud down sufficiently without the removed staples so I've put superglue where it's in contact with the metal base, and it seems to be holding. I bought the shroud with its own new plastic frame and was glad I did as one of the clips was broken on the old one. Has anyone else had a similar problems?

      Both my frames are plastic.I had to put in slips of double sided tape and its held for about 9 months so far.

    To remove the staples [which are OEM], and not cause damage to the trim, carefully lever centre of staple upwards, with penknife. I then cut this raised part in half with a Dremel disc cutter. Then lever two ends up to pull through with pliers. I too didn't attempt to restaple, but used hot glue where lugs come through; just a thin coat, to lock together.

    In 2002 we bought a brand new X Type, an 02 reg. In only a couple of months both gear stick gaiter 'and' handbrake gaiter started to split and fall apart. Really cheap and nasty. They quickly replaced them and after the next seven years the replacements were as good as new. Could the one you replaced not be the original as your Jag would be one of the very first made. We then bought another new one in 2009 and in 2018 traded it in for a new XE R Sport which my wife wouldn't drive. We then got a Fiesta but I missed my old X type. I've just bought another one a couple of weeks ago. A 58 plate SE 2.0 diesel. Only £2,195. it gleams and shines and runs like a new one. The gear gaiter needs renewing. It's black but the handbrake is cream leather like the interior which is odd. The handbrake gaiter is quite good yet but I will tackle the black gear gaiter tomorrow. Love watching your videos.

      The gaiter may not be the original - I was very suspicious of the staples put in it.

      Boy, what a struggle. I'm quite good with my hands but this I found was awkward. The one fitted was not leather and I was surprised to find it was stapled. It must have been done in the factory. It took ages to get them out but the plastic didn't crack and break. The new leather gaiter was a really tight fit on the lugs which I'm glad about but it was a bit loose without re stapling it. Our Vickie has my staple gun so I very carefully fixed it with 4 very small self tapping screws which worked. Then, out in the car, when I tried tightening it around the gear knob shaft, as expected, the tie snapped. I managed it with another tie but tightened it in the wrong place - too far up! So I tried again successfully to tighten it up, this time in the right place. Guess what? it was all upside down so I had to snip the tie and start AGAIN. Now, you might find this tale amusing but I am quite handy (I used to be a plumber) lol! I have noticed that the double vent in the centre of the dash is cracked in about six places (it's silver) and the silver light switch surround low down on the right is not only cracked but there's a bit missing right at the bottom! Other than that it's all in good nick. I've filmed it all and might put it on my TH-cam bike ride channel. By the way, everything that should work on this car does. It's even got a proper matching alloy wheel with a good tyre in the boot! Thanks for the video as it did help a lot. Cheers.

    Hey man! I bought my X-type 3.0 yesterday. It is a beautiful car! Holy shit! Drives very good, good interior etc. I have some serious issues though, that I have to do now. when I step on the break the car and especially the steering wheel vibrates. I know, that one of the brakes grinds, because I let a mechanic check the car before I bought it. But now I thought maybe could you maybe tell me your opinion about possible reasons for this grinding and heating and therefore destroying of the braking disk. The dealer said, all breakes have been replaced not a year ago, but my mechanic told me they are already in bad condition, also the brake hoses has been replaced, but my mechanic didn't like how the job was done. So i probably have to change them anyways, but maybe could you think of something x-type specific, which could have caused the heating of the break. two of the wheel bearings have been also replaced not one year ago, so I somehow assume, that they were replaced because of the issue, that still exists now! The car has not been driven much since many years it seems. it has around 60k miles on the clock. Thank you for your videos and communication before I bought it! It really helped me! I am very happy with the car and got it very cheap! Now I am able to put some money in the repairs, but I want to do it right, so that the real reason will be found. Any information can help! Feels like playing scotland yard! The dealer was crap, he didn't know anything about the car it seemed!

      Sounds like its time for a pair of new discs. Its an easy job about an hour a side. Modern discs only seem good for about 100,000 miles after that they wear thin and warp.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is, there were new disks attached in Nov 2016. But the mechanic told me, they are already faulty, especially one of them. So maybe something else caused the disk to get warm and deform. Today I asked another mechanic he said the disks are ok, and brakes are indeed new. But when I drive and hit the break from over 35 mph it vibrates a lot. I know it is hard to say without seeing/driving the car. I will check on Monday again and hopefully find a mechanic, who can identify the problem and not only the symptoms. But thank you for your information. I also get a new throttle valve, since the old one is probably too dirty. Some things to do! I also will think of the gearbox oil, that you recommended me to change. I hear screeching noise going from first to second gear. The car stood still basically for 7 years. The motor seems to be in good shape though!

      @johnnysevengun  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here in the UK many parts are fakes and don't even last a few months. If it is not the discs the most likely thing is the steering rod end ball joints but any decent mechanic would know that.

    • @SimonStreuffViolinEducation
      @SimonStreuffViolinEducation 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, I didn't know the English term, but the mechanic I visited after I bought it, told me one of the bearing on the damper on the front is maybe damaged or broken. I also have some steering noise. I will get that checked tomorrow if the mechanic has time to drive with me around the block to show him. I hope I will not get fake parts! I already ordered a throttle valve for 150. Couldn't find many alternatives anyways. I want to put in good quality parts. I think the car deserves it. I already researched for good breaking disks, actually the ATE disks are very good they say. Some people go for more racing like brakes, but that is not my driving style and they make more noise and are triple the price. Thank you for your suggestions. Is yours running good for now?

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the moment it the running the best it ever has. Changing all the gearbox oils made a huge difference. Plus it is summer time and cars go wrong less often when its warm.

    I bought a 2008 Xtype at the weekend. The gaiter has basically delaminated, it's not cracked but the fake leather coating has given up the ghost. Looks horrid, so will have to do this. The trim on mine is cream, as is the handbrake gaiter, but the gear stick is black. It's a shame I can't get a cream one to replace it.
