Unfortunately I was raised to behave this way because my family are very victorian in their actions and beliefs. So a lot of this actually I understood. When we would go to my grandmother's for Sunday Dinners (I am from the UK) it would always be served like this. The man would be the one to cut the meat and serve it and after dinner the women would go off into the living room while the men stayed in the dining room to drink whiskey and talk about business. The women would usually talk about fashion and babies and stuff like that. They would not read novels aloud though which kinda sucks as I might have liked that.
@@JixieDyeAuthor that is so interesting! My family would never do that though, the women have been active feminists for generations. I never knew people still raise their family like this. Did you enjoy some aspects of the lifestyle? And do you guys still follow those traditions? But easy/hard does not mean slow or fast. Emma is 100% right that we live in very fast times these days, thanks to the internet. The sheer amount of available information, goods and places to order goods from is far too overwhelming for a single person. Studies show that life also continously gets faster but I can't imagine how we could possibly handle more speed. Luckily, more and more movements also try to do the exact opposite which hopefully changes or delays that unfortunate development. We need to start inventing things that help us filtering information and don't give us access to even more information and goods. Don't get me wrong: there are countries that need to be more informed about the world (a good example is the US). But things like new smartphones, appliances, cars etc. should not be released that frequently. It's not sustainable and one doesn't even know anymore where to turn to to get the latest gadgets. 👍🏻
Hello Ruby, I'm from India. The situation here is very depressing right now but your videos make me feel so happy. I genuinely look forward to your uploads, they brighten my day! Thank you so much! (Did not expect so many replies, I'm so grateful for all of your responses. It feels so warm and beautiful. We all will get over this situation strong and healthy! )
I feel like these videos just highlight the differences between the modern age and the victorian era and shows how much humans have progressed over the years, for better or worse. Love these videos!
Frankly speaking, i am very much drained emotionally because of the covid situation here in India.. but whenever you upload...it relaxes me and gives a smile on my face. Please guys pray for my parents...they are covid positive 🥺🥺❤️🙏
It’s lovely how people in healthy situations spent more time with themselves and each other more in person instead of distracting their lives away/obsessing over what other people were doing to the degree of current times.
Awww yes I am living a romantic life, thanks you know I wish all girls the same, much love, England is truly most beautiful in the world, lots of love to #ENGLAND
Fascinating. It is one thing to read about this sort of thing, but it is much more informative to do it. I also enjoyed the ending when you talked about the harsh conditions of the lower classes. Well done.
The fact that your mum actually did this small thing for you😬 my mum and dad wouldnt DAAREE. They'd just laugh and call me weird, they'd also shout at me
i love how you address the fact that the routines you show in your vids represent the lives of only a small part of the pop during that victorian era... i think it adds an interesting extra layer to it :) also the cinematography is just 🤩
It's so cool your family participated in the making of this video. When I was little you were supposed to brush your hair 100 strokes (however long that took). Well Done Ruby! 👏
Hey can you please make more afternoon routines?! Because afternoon is the least productive part of the day (at least for me) It will be really helpful! Thank you!!
sleeping with a window open is sooo good tho.I used like four or five blankets and a scarf this winter just so i could sleep with my window open. kinda weird but it worked
Sleeping with a scarf sounds kinda hazardous, but the blankets are a good plan. And yeah, sleeping with the window open is great. Over here we don't have winters, so I could sleep with my window open all year with no problem 😅
I love how your family just plays along to these victorian scenario, it makes it even more enjoyable to watch! Being French I never gave much thought about the idiom "à la bonne franquette" and never thought it could exist in English but the fact that thanks to you I now know it does and is "à la francious" was the highlight of my day! Thank you for putting such efforts on your video while still always making it clear that the victorian times, despite being very much interesting, were not times that we should we wish to go back to.
Ruby your garden is so gorgeous and so is that red velvet sofa. So nice to see you wearing your pearls, they really suit you! Also growing up my grandparents had a little bell like that!!
How adorable to see all your family so predisposed to participate in your performances!😍 And I imagine it takes time to do it, so they stop their things to do it? Super nice!
This was very relaxing to watch. When you were reading to the room, it reminded me of myself, reading to my kids every night. I love sharing my love of books with them and am so happy they love books too.
I love everything related to Victorian style ND ruby of course...we learn so much from her..how to be productive disciplined ND something always new tht we never knew before.. most importantly how to enjoy life..i feel better about love ND life whenever I see her videos... I feel so blessed

Have you considered doing a video analysing how much information a Victorian person goes through compared to a moden person? It will be interesting as a modern person can watch educational videos at 2x speed but a Victorian can only read to process information. Love your videos!!
Dear Ruby, I thought it might interest you that reading out loud after dinner is still done in some countries and families. I'm not sure in what countries and if it's a national thing, but I'm German and this tradition has been carried in my family from the 19th century into the current day, and I plan to keep it alive and carry it forward myself. Several of our family friends have that tradition as well, independently from us. Usually everyone stays seated around the table, including the person reading, or you move from the table to the living room to get more comfortable, and you can take a few snacks like grapes or whatever small lovely things may have been part of the dinner plus your wine glasses with you. This can be very much a daily thing, and sometimes you can read out loud more of the same story in the evening before bed. Those candle-lit evenings turn the everyday mundane into special moments to remember. (Also, having all food already on the table is still a tradition.) It is very social and extremely bonding and fun. I hope people start to rediscover this beautiful tradition, there's really nothing quite like it..! Thank you for this beautiful video.💖
My father's family kept this tradition in the US, too. My great-grandfather would sit in the middle of the living room and read. My father would read to whoever was washing the dishes before we all moved into the living room.
i used to do rag curls when I was younger! You start at the base of your hair and roll upward, like you're putting in hair rollers. These are very fun to watch!
What a calm and peaceful life they had and here we are with lots of stress and hustle . Always running behind something. I think we just forget how enjoy slowness of life.
Hi, Just wanted to kindly point out that this type of meal/dinner service is actually called « à la Française » (Pronounced « franh-says ») not « francious » :)
My father's family has carried on the tradition of reading aloud since at least my great-grandfather's time (who I think was born about 1895). My father read to us every night and I love reading aloud to people as well. About hair curling, my mother did rag curlers for us when we were little, but they aren't very comfortable to sleep on. Pin curls are flatter and you can easily put a hairnet over them. If you wash your hair and then dry it till it's only slightly damp, pin curls don't take too long to dry.
Ruby, you are so sweet! This video is absolutely charming, and it's wonderful that your kind hearted mom and dad helped out with your Victorian evening. I know for sure you were Victorian in a past life, because you talk about Victorians so much. 💙
The video is, like all the others you made about Victorian era, really interesting and fascinating, Ruby!! You are a good actress and director, I'm getting addicted to your videos!!!
ive done rag curls before!! i literally got a clothes peg to secure the rag to the root of my hair, then you wrap it down one direction, and wrap it up the opposite!!
Watching a film can be just as social. All you need to do is make sure your guests already do as you do by yourself which is feel for the characters and follow the storyline. You would also want to make sure your guests are interested in discussing the film, either by pausing the film when someone wants to discuss something or by discussing the film after viewing it.
I really liked how you put so much effort into this video and also that even your family helped you so much. I very much loved watching your version of the Victorian Night Routine
Rag curls work much better when the end of the rag is clipped or bobby-pinned to the top of the head near the middle parting. Then wrap the hair around the rag starting near the top until all of the hair is spiralled around the rag. Then the hard part: start wrapping the rag, starting where the hair was most recently wrapped around the rag, around the hair, working your way upward so that when the hair is now completely encased within the rag. Unfasten the clipped/pinned end of the rag and tie the two ends of the rag together. This process works better when done by another person than by oneself, especially with long hair like yours. My mother used to set my hair and my sister's hair in rag curls from time to time, and they came out so lovely and are quite comfortable to sleep with. :)
I love how your family goes along with the extravagant dinners, etc. mine would ask “are you okay?” 😂
Unfortunately I was raised to behave this way because my family are very victorian in their actions and beliefs. So a lot of this actually I understood. I think back in the older centuries people had slower lives which allowed them to live in the moment. This is what we miss today.
Thanks Ruby 🥺
