"The World" is the ultimate symbol of the mirage that is Dubai. The actual islands are eroding and sinking into the sea, prices have dropped more than 50%, almost no houses have been built on them and the state-owned company that constructed this monstrosity had to be bailed out of multi-billion dollar debts.

I see a lot of comments about people wanting to go to Dubai or saying that the city has too much money and should feed the poor or whatever. I have been to Dubai and unless your a millionaire, you spend your day in the rest of the city which consists of crime, poverty, and starvation. I think the first thing should be providing jobs, homes, and food for there own people... then worry about playing in the sand.

I am kind of afraid to watch this documentary. there is a prophecy in Islam that the end of time would be very near when the shepherds in the desert compete in constructing tall buildings. Its an authentic narration with a sound chain of narrations and it fits the description of the modern UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. All these natives who inhabit these lands were once shepherds. I am just freaked out now.

@philippines1998 it is the name of a city and an Emirate (state) that resides in the nation know as the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is the largest city but the capital is Abu Dhabi. Does that clear things up?

@RM6721 your thinking is ok, but it will take 5oo yrs to to rise the sea level upto 3m. Thease buildings have only 50 to 100 yrs of life, there will be no money for repair or new buildings upto that time.

@prometheus882002 "their own people" live very well. however, it's the migrant workers who get a bad deal:
It is the promise of a land of opportunity that has brought an estimated one million migrant workers to Dubai. Most come from areas of extreme poverty in the Indian sub-continent where they are easy prey for recruitment agents. Paying up to £2,000 to make the trip, the sum often has to be borrowed or family land sold in the belief that within 18 months the debt can be repaid.

@poptube87 It wouldnt be just an earthquake in Dubai, The earthquake that rocked Indonesia started in ALASKA! And the shallow waters would be completey capable of letting a much larger wave into the gulf. Would a tsunami form in Dubai, of course not. Would a tsunami travel to Dubai and reclaim it New Orleans style. Yes, it most certainly could/will....

"With sand in seemingly limitless supply, there seems to be no sign of a construction slowdown."
Well, as the Dubai Sheikh was surprised to learn on occasion of the financial crisis, money, unlike sand, does not come in "limitless supply". As things stand now, this megalomaniac waste of ressources will probably remain an unfinished project forever.
Kind of reminds me of the story of the Tower of Babel - with The Economy playing the role of a furious Jehova.
