11/09/2022: Co-Witnessing and Social Justice with Irene Kacandes

Join us for "Co-Witnessing and Social Justice", an Elie Wiesel Memorial Lecture with Professor Irene Kacandes. Professor Kacandes addresses the meaning of “co-witnessing” as a way to support victims of injustice by learning and telling their stories. Co-witnessing requires careful listening, true compassion, serious research, humility about one’s own role and its limitations, and naming the true victims rather than appropriating their victimhood. Kacandes discusses the domains within which co-witnessing occurs: literary, documentary, journalistic, and public speech. This work can lead to intervening in ongoing violence or naming past violence as social injustice.
