You get paid money for a shorter life. Why do you think night shift workers get paid more? Why do high risk jobs get paid more? Why do welders get paid more? It's all because people are willing to make more money to take a risk. Go screw yourself
he wasn't with the Eagles very long, but the toughness he showed in that 91 season will forever make him one of my Favorite Eagles ever. He took a real beating that year and kept getting back up. It's a shame that he is suffering from this.
Players entering the NFL in 2016 know the risks. If they choose to play, knowing the risks, I'm okay with that. But, players in Jim McMahon's era didn't know the risks, and there is pretty solid evidence that the NFL fought to keep them from knowing the risks. The injuries are not the sin, it is the coverup that damns the NFL. Give people all the information, and let people make informed decisions. That may not be good for business, but it is the right thing to do.
All my kids are in college and back in the early 2000's when they were old enough to play youth sports, there was zero knowledge about 'CTE'. What we did know back then was that football was dangerous and I think most were worried about spinal injuries. Concussions were something that were thought as a temporary condition and like a bad bruise, the brain would heal. We now know that this is not the case. Parents now a days with all the media hype know about CTE. To me, it's almost criminal to allow kids to play football. Sure all sports have an element of risk but football takes the cakes. not way I would let me kids play football. Luckily back then, my son was a runt and I knew football was not a good match for his phsyical traits. he played soccer and thankfully in that sport, he has never suffered a concussion. My two daughters played soccer and only one suffered a bad concussion. out of three kids and over a thousand games and a thousand training sessions, that's an insanely low probability of concussion. Football can't touch that %.
Glenn Zanotti You make a good point, when I played his ball, they used smelling salts to bring you back, next series you went right back to playing. I never really understood concussions until I was side swiped by a huge cement pumper truck, the kind with a huge arm that places concrete in hard to reach places. The highway patrol came and took a report, he was a couple of cars behind me. The paramedics checked me out, I was extremely sore and falling into shock, the left side of my head hit the door post of my truck very hard, but amazingly they let me go. 100 miles further up the freeway I was stopped by the highway patrol again. They said I was weaving from lane to lane, leaving the truck I was taken by ambulance to the ER. I had no clue I wasn't in perfect control of the car, but other drivers watched me and reported that I was a under the influence driver. I had lots of scans and x-rays, the neurologist said I had a severe concussion with significant bleeding in the brain. I kept wondering when are they going to take blood or ask for some urine to prove I hadn't been drinking or using drugs, they never did, but they found the police report from earlier sitting on my dash. It takes someone well trained to make a diagnosis of a concussion immediately after it happened. I'm sure Jim had multiple head bangs at BYU as well as in the Bigs. You're right, we love football and if the NFL required a prospect to sign off any liability on the NFL part to play, 99.99999% of players would do it.
Yeah ive had plenty of concussions and hits to the head due to rugby and football, sadly i didnt do my research until after them... wish someone couldve informed me of the dangers before i couldve made these terrible decisions but honestly why cant there just be more information given to us and in general too bad my dad wasnt so lucky either and honestly im 90% sure he has some form of cte so cant wait for 30 years from now !

Nobody should have to face that in life, especially a talented and well respected athlete like Jim! 💕I'd love to meet him someday, watching the 85 Bears got me thru a very rough divorce that year & made my life, (pardon the pun), bearable! 😊
Jim, I've had the same problem with names, unfortunately I didn't have your talent, even a drop. I loved watching you as a Cougar and Bear, nobody was tougher. My favorite game was when you came back from an injury into a Bear game at Minnesota. The announcers used the "don't expect much" line to indicate that the Vikes were going to continue to dominate with or without you. Big mistake you passed for TD after TD, it was the best pro game I saw you play. I'll never understand how you could be so magnificent while busted up.

As a former football player and football coach I can totally understand the risk of playing this sport that’s very violent with great risks of serious and permanent injuries. With that being said I asked the question if we should ban football and every contact sports???? There’s no wrong or right answer to this question. Best we can hope for is with the information we now have today will hopefully help with changes that can reduce as much as possible these serious injuries. Sad to see Macmahon like this. Hope players that went through all this crap get something. Can’t get their life back, but maybe they can be financially stable. And not end up like Mike Webster
The people who write about them changing the game never played. The NFL could careless about their players, and if L.W. plays this week after having a head injury you will know for sure. Many in the past made little to no money. The owners have some how got us tax payers to pay for about 70 percent of their new stadiums to be built. That is so messed up.
I’ve seen him played many times in the 80s at soldier Field and I was downtown Chicago when they won the Super Bowl. This one particular time I had a Bears party and a friend went into my bathroom and took my eyeliner and put the number nine on his forehead. He came out of the bathroom and we died laughing and asked who was P ? It’s now 2021, how is he doing?
My uncle and 3 other 49ers have died from Lou Gherig's disease. 3 of them played on the same team in the 60's. Dwight Clarke just passed. The drugs given to them after injuries by team doctors were new to the era and they had no idea it would possibly cause future issues. The NFL should help these people in need but don't make it a court battle. Do it because these players are part of the NFL family.
anybody that has a thought process should realize how dangerous this sport is and suffer the consequences personally for making the choice to participate.
Love Jim but players were surprised to learn that banging heads 40 times every Sunday might cause a brain problem is a shock to discover? Bull. You simply didn’t care and wouldn’t have cared had you known. Then you turned 50 couldn’t remember yesterday and got scared then you cared.
+TELEVISIONARCHIVES YES BUT HE'S THE ONLY QB TO WIN A SUPERBOWL FOR THE BEARS.!! GREAT GUY.!! NOT LIKE THE SHITBAG LOSER BEN ROETHLISBERGER. "SHAME OF AMERICA". SHOULD BE IN JAIL NOT THE HOF.
I occasionally think of (and maybe worry a little about) 2 other QB's who suffered multiple, serious concussions: Troy Aikman and Trent Green. Trent, especially.
I like his statement that he still loves life, he would never take his life. This does not mean that he isn't suffering g all the symptoms and problems that come with brain injury. Every brain injury affects people differently. As a TBI survivor I can tell you the sleep problems are probably the worse along with the seizures and memory loss Depression I have been able to beat by doing things I love and by turning to my savior Jesus Christ. No one like Jesus! He gets you thru anything!
It is what it is. A violent game where the stakes are highs. I guess the NFL could demand that the linebackers not hurt the QB when tackling, if that is even possible.
"The only job I ever had was football". Retired at 37. It's a shame, but you take the good with the bad. I have had family and friends that have died early from some of the same maladies, only they never had millions, and were working like dogs until they couldn't. It's easy to say "I would chose something else" when your done and comfortable. Not so much when you're not. I feel for the old guys and to an extent the new, but given the choice between car salesman or linebacker.....
You mean that a full grown man who attended college for at least 2 years didn't have some idea about the POSSIBILITY of brain injury. NASCAR doesn't have to tell their drivers that they could die on the track. MLB doesn't have to tell their players that a 100 mph fastball could kill them. Fault should be 50/50. The players knew/know as much as the NFL. And I can't stand the NFL. Players need to take responsibility for their own actions also.
Players such as Larry Csonka took hundreds of more blows to the head and are fine. When considering CTE, all factors should be taken into consideration.
Unbelievable! McMahon talking about how football caused his early dementia while chewing tobacco! Jim, the tobacco causes early dementia and short term memory problems too. Maybe you could start a class-action with the Tobacco companies! Perhaps we need a study about football + tobacco for the synergy effects!
When my buddies ask me who is the greatest QB that ever played football?. It's always a no brainer for me. JIM McMahon is the greatest QB ever in recorded history.
people that say he's greedy and wants money look at his house I think that's b******* you need to take the man for his word they're just jealous thanks for the Super Bowl gym it was the best one ever 1985 Thanks for the Memories
When former players who are involved in the lawsuit against the league turn around and say things like "I would do it all over again" or they admit they wouldn't have stopped playing anyway, it makes me feel FAR less sorry for them.
Speculation only...I don’t think McMahon would have changed anything had he known. Did we ever see him use caution or reserve in anything he did? And I think he’s the kind of guy that would go on camera now and say baseball was my first love, I would have chose that (but I instead chose my second love which was a violent, high risk professional sport).
I do sympathize with NFL (and players of other sports) players for what they must endure now in their later years... but I also have to wonder how any of them could think that repeated injury to your body's master organ would not also carry significant extended consequences? Sure, we have more research now to support the idea of these consequences, but common sense should have prevailed somewhere along the line...
You're delusional. It's a dangerous contact sport by nature.. what's next? Are you going to so war needs to be safer. Russia and Ukraine should start using paintball guns to make war safe
It is rough when you have brain disease, I always wear sunglasses too and sometimes my mood jumps from one extreme to the next but I’ve got GOD on my side and HE gave me a beautiful woman to take care of me. I kinda rambled on but yeah these guys got it bad
You have all these people on TH-cam who complain that the players aren't as tough as in the old days. Of course, complaining about it from their sofas.
Chewing tobacco doesn't help with dementia either Mr. McMahon. The reason why many of these professional athletes experience such negative health after playing their sport is because they know very little about living a healthy life style. They stayed lean, healthy and fit simply by the demands of their sport and being gifted superior genetics that allowed them to eat like garbage as well as have horrible health habits. Once they get done all hell brakes loose and they get to experience the consequences of their poor health decisions.
@@JeramyRichter gimme shelter was said to have been one of the songs of choice by army personnel driving tanks into battle in vietnam. they would have the song playing on little cassette recorders beside them as they drove their tanks to war.
It's the whole smoking debate all over again. People sued tobacco companies because they didn't know breathing smoke into their lungs was bad for their health. Now NFL Players are suing because the NFL didn't tell them that a violent sport like like football was bad for their health.
Tobacco companies suppressed the research and lied about health issues. They now say smoking can cause lung disease and cancer, but it’s a personal choice. The NFL suppressed and refused to research health issue issues, like other industries with asbestosis, Black Lung, etc.
Webster of the Steelers was the first case. He lost everything including his mind from CTE. He was crushed. Lost family, friends, all of his health, money. He lived in a car at a dump his last years. All due to the. NFL denials and active suits against anyone who mentioned CTE after it was discovered. His was the first brain donated toward this research.
I just don't agree with this lawsuit. Football is a dangerous sport -- that has been known since the game began. Unfortunately players get injured, some never to walk again. However, everything has its risk. This is no different than smokers suing the tobacco companies when they get lung cancer. McMahon said it himself - people involved in the lawsuit are financially in "need". I'm sorry for McMahon's health status -- but the lawsuit is ludicrious

Now I'm not trying to say there are no issue's with football related concussions, I'm just saying your symptoms are quite common among the general population.
"It's not about the money. It's about raising awareness." LOL! There are better ways of raising awareness, rather than suing the league that made you a star, and gave you a lavish lifestyle.
I love the way these idiotic interviewers always try to drum up some controversy to sell their stupid story. I am willing to bet nobody ever accused Jim McMahon of doing this out of greed. How asinine.
I'm 28 and I sometimes don't remember the names of people I just met. Is that all McMahon has? Also, I don't doubt that playing football causes concussions, but what about the behavior McMahon engaged in? Sad to see Macmahon like this. Hope players that went through all this crap get something. Can’t get their life back, but maybe they can be financially stable. And not end up like Mike Webster
McMahon was tougher than a two-dollar steak
Have to remember that one
The people who write about them changing the game never played. The NFL could careless about their players, and if L.W. plays this week after having a head injury you will know for sure. Many in the past made little to no money. The owners have some how got us tax payers to pay for about 70 percent of their new stadiums to be built. That is so messed up.
illegal drug use
Concussions TBI no matter who
You are they deny deny deny It's something insurance & lawyers can fight to not compensate people. And fight they do
I’ve seen him played many times in the 80s at soldier Field and I was downtown Chicago when they won the Super Bowl.
Matt Beeman
Bob Waters. He, Matt Hazeltine, and Gary Lewis all played together in the 60's and they all got ALS.
anybody that has a thought process should realize how dangerous this sport is and suffer the consequences personally for making the choice to participate.
Love Jim but players were surprised to learn that banging heads 40 times every Sunday might cause a brain problem is a shock to discover? Bull. You simply didn’t care and wouldn’t have cared had you known. Then you turned 50 couldn’t remember yesterday and got scared then you cared.
Money
LOVED this dude when he was playing.
Should be in the HOF. Thanks Charles Martin
Jim McMahon was a pain in the ass not only to the NFL but to others on his team.
+TELEVISIONARCHIVES YES BUT HE'S THE ONLY QB
TO WIN A SUPERBOWL FOR THE BEARS.!!
GREAT GUY.!!
NOT LIKE THE SHITBAG LOSER BEN ROETHLISBERGER.
"SHAME OF AMERICA".
SHOULD BE IN JAIL NOT THE HOF.
@Matt Beeman No shit?
They're the most prone but they are the most glamorous. Everyone wants to be QB but they can't
I occasionally think of (and maybe worry a little about) 2 other QB's who suffered multiple, serious concussions: Troy Aikman and Trent Green. Trent, especially.
I suppose no one told him about the dangers of chew either.
Love Him or Hate Him the Dude knew how to Win. He had twice the heart and brains Cutler has.
That doesn't take much
LOL!
People claiming they know what's best for Jim can't spell. Do you need checking for CTE too?
Jim is showing the beginnings of Parkinson's here, too. I'm glad he's in good emotional health, though.
I was always a Jimmy Mac fan Class Act hope to meet him someday if I can
It is what it is.
Haha, drinking Vitamin Water with a big chaw in. I'm getting killer heartburn just thinking about it.
It's happening in the UK with the rugby players CTE is no joke all the best to the nfl players
Players such as Larry Csonka took hundreds of more blows to the head and are fine. When considering CTE, all factors should be taken into consideration.
Did you ask Larry Csonka.
Did you ask Junior Seau?
Csonka has a TV show about the wilderness in Alaska, hard to do with dementia.
Hes out here calling bellicheck a liar now. Bro shouldn't be interviewed. This is a decade after this interview
And yet . . . the game still goes on.
I wonder how he is in 2019. how bad did his dimentia get?
Well why didn’t you guys come out with the CTE research?? You’d be rich now since you knew so much
God bless you, jim. 🏈💪
He's one of BYU's own. Jimmy Mac is a god
Shoulda kept mullet. Also I do those same things so i must have early dementia
Sad thing is that football era they didn’t get paid shit compared to now.
The market and economics decides that based on revenue from fans.
I don't have dementia, but I can never remember names!
Cte is there but this generation of football is safer because of rule changes but we still have a way to go to make the game as safe as it can be
You're delusional. It's a dangerous contact sport by nature.. what's next? Are you going to so war needs to be safer. Russia and Ukraine should start using paintball guns to make war safe
Before or AFTER he played football?
My advice to all HS good athletes
Go baseball
Not to many regrets but thats one of them.
Personally suffered 2 FB concussions
1 hs
1 college
No mention of the cocaine, pain killers, and steroids he abused. Could have that contributed to his brain problem?
You’re a doctor ?
He seems likable here, but when I met him in 2005, he was NOT friendly.
imagine being cranky when you have a brain disease. that awful man
It is rough when you have brain disease, I always wear sunglasses too and sometimes my mood jumps from one extreme to the next but I’ve got GOD on my side and HE gave me a beautiful woman to take care of me. I kinda rambled on but yeah these guys got it bad
Roger B CTE will do it to you
@@tanakinskywalker7089 why do you wear the sunglasses mate?
Rob Banks keeps the light out of my eyes so less headaches
2:53 What is the name of that Song?
Super bowl shuffle
You have all these people on TH-cam who complain that the players aren't as tough as in the old days. Of course, complaining about it from their sofas.
This lawsuit is bogus you know what you sign up for sorry.
What was this quarterback’s name again?
❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓❓
Anybody know the name of that song that comes on around 2:00?
It’s “gimmie shelter” by The Rolling Stones
@@JeramyRichter gimme shelter was said to have been one of the songs of choice by army personnel driving tanks into battle in vietnam. they would have the song playing on little cassette recorders beside them as they drove their tanks to war.
Jim McMahon love that dude...
Yep and cocaine didn't help he got paid well and now blaming the nfl
Does Jim McMahon like Charles Martin?
Webster of the Steelers was the first case. He lost everything including his mind from CTE. He was crushed. Lost family, friends, all of his health, money. He lived in a car at a dump his last years. All due to the. NFL denials and active suits against anyone who mentioned CTE after it was discovered. His was the first brain donated toward this research.
He cant remember 2 minutes ago but remembers stuff from the 80s werid maybe idk.
I HAVE TO SAY NO MATTER WHAT YOU GET PAID LOSING BRAIN POWER OR FORGETTING SIMPLE THINGS IS NOT WORTH THE $
Jim McMahon. Rules!
I don't think he would admit he thinks about suicide.... I hope he is telling us the truth 🙏
This disease is crazy to have before there was any substances being used the right to left hemispheres were touching enlargement lateral vertical from frontal horn to the all the enlargement of the third vertical my brain had the worst cause of dementia at 24 even after 2012 to 2013 there was maybe use of 4 times to 8 got home frome icu they sent me home with confusion and extrem memory loss no further testing just 8 hospital visit with extreme dementia i gusse when you die 9 times In life it causes server damage and I gusse you took your first brain injury at 6 then by the time your 11 your well over 100 concussions then in total 150 extreme brain injury no helmet during any of then the world calls me trash and weak and said I chosed full pledge dementia cte I don't see people in the world have so many concussions 1000 scars on my head all from baseball bat's with steal chair's boxing BMX accidents
I think the LAwsuit is silly but if you want awareness you sue. That is why the NFL is making all these rule changes because of the lawsuit
Hey Jim, I experience the same shit and I never played football. Can I still be involved in the law suit. Most of what you are experiencing is called old age. Now I'm not trying to say there are no issue's with football related concussions, I'm just saying your symptoms are quite common among the general population.
widndn he is like 50
Hey dumbass, this dude is fucked up from football don’t be a dick
"It's not about the money. It's about raising awareness." LOL! There are better ways of raising awareness, rather than suing the league that made you a star, and gave you a lavish lifestyle.
I love the way these idiotic interviewers always try to drum up some controversy to sell their stupid story. I am willing to bet nobody ever accused Jim McMahon of doing this out of greed. How asinine.
My favorite QB!!!
maybe they should find a different occupation. I assume next carpenters will sue for injuries to their arms from hammering so much. lol
Just say no to drugs
He's my fav
Respect Jimbo. The interviewer...not so much.
How is CTE detected?
I'm 28 and I sometimes don't remember the names of people I just met. Is that all McMahon has?
Also, I don't doubt that playing football causes concussions, but what about the behavior McMahon engaged in? Drinking heavily, headbutting other players in celebration...you don't think that caused any brain issues, Jimmy?
players enjoy the lives of kings, their main problem is bad money management.
Boxing is so much worse. These retired football players still have their speech. Go listen to tommy hearns, meldrick taylor, terry norris.
Stop passing the blame.....All part of the game.
