Tannenbaum is at least part of the reason Linus wrote Linux. Tannenbaum wasn't a fan of Linux because it's a monolithic kernel and his book (and Minix) is about micro kernels. I never read his book, but I can recommend "Understanding the Linux Kernel" and "Practical Unix Programming". These are good foundational books, I strongly recommend the latter.
