In this episode I provide the history of the original Hummer brand, which in 1992 started with a civilian version of the military Humvee truck from AM General, named the Hummer. Later GM bought the rights to the Hummer name and renamed the truck the H1, and then released a slightly smaller (but still huge) truck called the H2 in 2002, and an even smaller truck called the H3 in 2006. A proposed H4 model never went to production as GM entered bankruptcy in 2009 and shut down Hummer by 2010. Today GM has brought back the Hummer name as a sub-brand under GMC for an all-electric truck, which other than size and the name, shares nothing with the original Hummer. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

The singular thing I think about when it comes to Hummers is an episode of Reno 911 when they ran out of gas trying to maneuver out of a parking space. It was awesome.
Never seen that episode but I'm laughing all the same, one of the best shows ever. Now I'm gonna go look for it, thanks.

One of the forces driving Hummer sales in the early 2000s was a tax break available to businesses for commercial trucks, such as dump trucks or farm trucks. The qualifier for a commercial truck was based solely on vehicle weight, which the Hummers had in spades, so many small businessmen titled them to their companies even though their utility as a commercial truck was negligible.
It's called section 179 and although it has changed slightly, it's still a loophole used today to purchase navigators escalades and land rovers. It's also why a lot of limo companies use navigators and suburbans instead of a full size sedan like an xts or continental because the size of the full sized SUVs is better for tax purposes even though they cost more to fuel. Sadly, it only works if a vehicle is purchased brand new (it was originally intended for contractors and farmers to be able to buy a full sized truck and to help the big 3 move new inventory.

Back in the mid-2000s my neighbors both drove hummers. They had a 1,300 square foot ranch home. It was kinda hilarious.
I remember the H2 being something if an anti-Prius in the 2000s, so I’m amused that it’s now an electric car. At least the name is fitting an electric brand. Glad it’s back.
Great video, in high school I did a research paper on US military overconfidence and one of my biggest examples was the use of the HMMWV. Yes they started as being used behind the front lines but soon enough they were pushed further and further forward and soon we’re seeing IEDs, the first casualties caused by this were from operation just cause. I believe it was a rollover but it has been a while since I wrote that paper. The HMMWV kept getting more armor to try and counteract IEDs until we get to now when the poor trucks are so heavy that the suspension can barely support them, rollovers are more common, and now they must look at other vehicles in order to replace the HMMWV, a truck that was forced into a role it wasn’t made for, like a square peg into a round hole
It must be interesting to see Humvees used in Ukraine, where they have performed much better. In fairness they are performing the role they were originally designed for there instead of counter-insurgency patrols.
There was a H3 Alpha as well, 2008-2009. It was equipped with a 5.3L V8
There was also an H3T Alpha. Basically a unicorn. I always wanted one, but they usually came to market right after I bought something else.

I remember how the Hummer H2 was all over the place in the late 2000's. It was sort of a substitute for the Cadillac Escalade in certain circles as a status symbol. They are nowhere to be found these days.

I love my H1, owned it since 2006. They truly are like nothing else, you have to understand the H1/HMMWV platform was originally designed in the late 70's and early 80's and they had independent suspension in all 4 corners, disk brakes in all 4 corners, coil suspension in all 4 corners, aluminum body etc etc.. Modern vehicles are just catching up on some of the stuff(aluminum body etc.)... They also have geared hubs, inboard brakes, CTIS(central tire inflation), mid mounted engine so that weight is better distributed to both the front and rear axles, great clearance and center of gravity. etc etc.
the only car just as rugged and cool as the Hummer H1 is imho the Lamborghini LM002

Nice job. Back when I was a kid, my dad and were waiting to make a turn in unusually heavy traffic. I asked "Where did all these cars come from?" Dad looked at me and said "Detroit". Showing my age with that one.
I had an 06 H3 and loved it. If they brought back the same H3 body with a new engine I would pre order one right away.
I think the H3 would sell very well nowadays because similar vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler are having record sales.
Hopefully GM realizes this and makes an affordable (under $40,000) H3 sized Hummer.
Hated driving my buddy’s. It had the 5 cylinder and the chopped wheels made me feel trapped. I’m a 6’ 270lb guy.
I've driven many HMMWVs, but the H3 proved itself to me when I was an Army Recruiter. I was tasked with leading the "A" group of a bike race across northern Louisiana and southern Mississippi. It was 104 miles, and the lead racers could hit over 55 mph at times. I was driving one of the battalion's Army branded H3s and gave it my all to stay ahead but within sight of the racers; often they'd round a blind curve or top a hill where I'd stopped and force me to go full throttle. Anyway, I took that H3 to the limit off and on road. By the time the race was finished, it was covered in mud, had some suspension rattle, and showed me that despite its small size it was capable of some decent off-roading.

I always find it funny when a H2 owner down plays a H3 owner, little do they know a H3 Alpha is a pretty good offroad platform and would run circles around an H2 on the trail
I drove Hummys in my army enlistment. 1990s. DA got our MP company new vehicles, 1992. We left our old vehicles in 🇵🇦. Odd, the MP company was deactivated ✂️ FY1995. That's how the DoD spends your tax $$$.

My Hummer was the best vehicle I ever owned, aside from the fact that the gas mileage was horrible. Oh and you also couldn’t see anything out of the back window. Backing up required saying a short prayer.
Fun fact: it was called the Hummer because you would hum prayers when backing up and to make it to the gas station 😆

Wow! that is actually pretty cool to bring hummer back as an EV, it is large enough to carry the large amount of batteries to get good horsepower and good range. If I had $110,000 I would buy one. and I'm not even an EV person.

I visit a friend who lives and works in Detroit for the “big three” and others. I love driving around and seeing all the cars in their cladding and camo that aren’t out yet.

The Willys/AMC connection was very interesting to learn about. Also, while it's very commonly mispronounced, Willys is actually meant to be pronounced "Willis" (just like the actor). But "Willy's" is more fun to say

First may I say thank you for this brilliant content - I cut my teeth in the auto sector within US vehicle line ups before working only for European OEM and these episodes take me back to happy times of trying to offload Cavaliers against the dreaded Dodge Shadow - while this hummer episode made me smile a lot. I remember the H1 in military spec in Germany and they were a great vehicle - but why you would want one as a daily? No idea unless you lived in a forest!
I have one as a daily... but yeah I do live in a forest lol.. However I purchased it when I lived in the city.. 4dr Jeep Wrangler(before they were produced) with a pickup bed, soft top, capable offroad, diesel and decent tow/hauling capacity. What is there not to love?
Never got the appeal to them. In the Toledo Ohio area, I remember there being a Hummer dealer on Dussel dr in Maumee, which is now a Kroger store. I was always curious of how many Hummers were actually sold there. People in The Toledo area are mostly blue collar workers, with not a lot of disposable income.
Toledo is jeep country given your jeep plant. Surely more jeeps were sold than Hummers
@@jlang8213 oh for sure, jeep is king here, however we have a large GM plant as well in Toledo. I have seen a few hummers around but as I say, a lot of people don't have a lot of disposable income in Toledo.
During my time in the Army Reserve…….. the HMMWV was one of the first military vehicles I got checked out on. I was assigned to Headquarters/Headquarters Company of a infantry battalion so we had several variants. Cargo, utility, ambulance, yes even the gunship version seen in movies.
In 1991, I recall a Desert Storm 🏜 Hummer with a huge M2 .50BMG on top. It shook & rattled as the full auto .50 cranked out 💥. We put crap M-19 40mm "guns" 🤔 on our MP hummers. They were trash. Never worked correctly, looked cool but never functioned.

In the late-'90s I once saw a guy park his bright red AM General Hummer in a McDonald's parking lot. I kid you not. It was hilarious. Good thing the lot was mostly empty. It must've taken up about 1 1/2 of those COMPACT parking spaces.
I have a Hmmwv, it’s awesome and I don’t care about scratching it although I’d like to get a h1 wagon at some point.
I would love to see a video on the Dodge/Mitsubishi Colt! Specifically the 70’s/ early 80’s one that could be driven as a manual or automatic and the early 90’s turbo that was banned from the Philadelphia market for being uninsurable
H1 brakes where moved onboard mostly for the on board tire inflation system. Also the H2 was coil/air bag rear suspension similar to the Tahoe/suburban not truck(leaf spring)
H1 brakes are inboard thanks to the overall design of the HMMWV platform. It was even before "on board tire inflation system" aka CTIS, it was setup that way to try to keep the brakes up out of the mud/dirt while also leveraging off of the gearing of the geared hub to allow a 10" disk brake system to perform like a 19" system.
I would love to get my hands on an H1 Alpha, those things are beyond cool.👍

As a young Army soldier in the early '90s, I hit a K-rail on the side of the road, misjudging the width of the Humvee I was driving. All it did was bend the rim and pop the tire, since the wheels stick out so far from the fenders.
This is a great story. Now one of my favorites.

Honestly i don't know why somebody born in the 70s or 80s think 18 seconds from 0 to 60 is "terribly" slow for a truck. These were normal numbers for normal passenger cars especially outside of the US
Because this isn't the 1970s or '80s anymore. If we're talking about vehicles from that time of course I'll expect that, but in 2022 I don't ever want to see that again.
When the Hummer dealership in Milwaukee opened way back it was rumored to be one of the first in the country (can't confirm) but withing a few short yrs it closed and turned into a smart car dealer, then to a Nissan dealer. My brother has one and hates it.

I worked with a woman who had one. When gas first went over $2 a gallon, she went crazy. It got about 8-9 mpg.

@ 3:03 - I'm not sure by what you mean "in service" here, but the Army rolled out the new HMMWV in the summer of 1985; it was fully "in service" at that time. The HMMWV first saw combat in 1993 in Panama, but a number of military vehicles and weapons first saw combat at that time, because it was the first real combat we were *openly* engaged in since we pulled out of Vietnam. I was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in the Summer of 1985, and the HMMWV was everywhere by then. I happened to be there during the "sweet spot" for off-roaders such as myself: the HMMWV and the Jeep were in service at the same time, so we could drive both and compare them directly. The Jeep - hands down - was the better vehicle for what the Jeep was originally intended, but it was much, much smaller and absolutely open to enemy fire, the weather, angry animals, rock-tossing, on-base "Dependa" brats, etc. It was being asked to do things it was never designed for, and it was failing. The HMWWV was supposed to replace the Jeep (which it never really did) and several other vehicles. It was a Swiss Army Knife. As we have learned from combat in the Persian Gulf region, the HMMWV was eventually tasked to do more than it was designed to do by the same idiots who insisted the Jeep do things it was not supposed to do. Eventually, they wanted this unarmored vehicle to be an armored vehicle, which it never was. So lots of our casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan were due to IEDs blowing through the floor pan, which was never, ever intended to be mine-proof or even mine-resistant. In truth, the Army and Marines could *still* find a lot of use for the original Jeep. The HMMWV was never all that good at its job because as soon as the Army got it they started to misuse it. There's no worse feeling in the world than being trapped like "SPAM in the can" inside an unarmored HMMWV taking direct fire. At least in the Jeep you could break and run for it easily. Egressing an HMMWV under fire takes what feels like a lifetime. This is why the misused Jeep progressed to the much better HMMWV, which was in turn misused (and somewhat misunderstood by command elements) and replaced by the MRAP systems we have now or that are in development. Needs change, and the Jeep is still the best for its original intended use, but we no longer have a need for that use, or that need is very small and specific, and now handled by those silly side-by-sides. The same with the HMMWV: it outlived its need and was pressed into service doing things it was not good at, so now we have eleventy bazillion megabuck MRAP things. The HMMWV has its adherents, as does the Jeep. And MRAP has its following. But none of them should be misused, command elements need to be made to understand the limitations, and then they need to figure out what it is that they need and have someone design that for them. We are transitioning back toward longer, more accurate rifles, from the M4 back to something like the M16 (but "better" and much more expensive) because the focus of the Army has once again shifted from the urban, asymmetric stuff of the Middle East back toward the open field and forest warfare expected in European environs. The weapons and training have been shifting in this direction for some time now, and something like the open Jeep will become useful again. You just watch: in five or ten years a "new jeep" will be introduced to replace those old, outdated, bulky, ineffective MRAPs. HAHAHA!!! I just wanted to point out that the HMMWV was fully in service in the Army by mid-1985, and the USMC started getting them shortly after that. (I think. I am no guardian of Crayon Eater Lore. Hats off to all my great Crayon Eater friends and my Marine grunt father!)

I really did like my used h3 that I bought when I was 18, Hard large firestone 33" tires on it, Did mud pretty well here in Iowa. Saved my life in a bad car accident. But that v5 was awful lol.

my dad joined the army in 1986 and he got to test drive the humvee's and his officer told him drive till they die.
by today's standards, it's relatively the same for prob only with standard trucks....an F150 is huge compared to an F150 from the late 80's early 90's....when I saw the new ford ranger a few months back, this 'mid sized' truck is bigger that the afore mentioned 80's F150...Alfas are not that big now lol

The LS is the closest the world has ever came to a 4 door Mustang. 280HP DOHC 3.9L V8, handling that rivals even brand new mustangs, and one MEAN exhaust note.
Just a suggestion, ik it was mentioned during the Thunderbird Video, but I think it needs its own episode. As it's so much better then the Thunderbird. Because it was built to be sporty. Not a cruiser.
I have never seen a 2 door civilian H1.
In my country Hummers were not popular, so it was interesting to see one on the road. Now there are only 8 H3 for sale, and are priced less than a Toyota Landcruiser of the same year. Would be nice to see a new model available.

Original military versions had a throttle lock. Presumably to help keep throttle at a certain setting for maintenance……..had specific warnings about NOT using the throttle lock as cruise control.

I didn't know the H3 was built on the Colorado/Canyon platform. After working on a few Canyons and Colorados with the hostile mechanical engineering design, I honestly think I'd never want to work on an H3.

I mean the interior was generic GM cheap. Shift lever wobbled so much. Plastics where noticeable bad. Add to the list.. they where severely toned down for road use rather than 4X4.
