I'm so glad to see someone showing the true nature of "livestock". Growing up on a large farm I was lucky my parents let me interact with ours so I would understand them as the complex, feeling creatures that they are. You can tell the difference between a herd on a family run farm over commercially bred herds. Letting animals develop and share their world, develop relationships with all of us is so rewarding. Just the other day I drove past a herd around supper time when "mom" was headed out to the barn and had to smile seeing them all run towards her. Made me recall my own parents taking their evening walks down through the pastures, collie dog, cats, geese and cattle all trailing along in companionable quiet. Now that's an enriched life and forever grateful to have grown up in the environment. As children, instructions for the way we treated all animals was simple- if you pull on the cat's tail and get scratched, well you asked for it. The way we treat animals is everything, and all you need to know about a person's character. I really like this guy

I had an experience as a kid. The bull was the farm's stud and everyone was scared to death of him (Grin). Then this little wisp of a 7-year-old sits down on a stump and starts reading. The bull, if he had a name I don't remember it now, enjoyed being read to. LOL Scared the living daylights out of everyone when this kid walked out into the field and the bull came running. Stopped and lowered his head for a scratch. He wasn't mean, some male had treated him badly and he retaliated by attacking all males. I loved that Hereford. He was my friend. It is an experience that has stayed with me for over 70 years. Your memories are golden! Thanks for sharing. Stay Safe.
I have a Black Angus cow named Annabelle and she is a total sweetheart . I named her after Annabelle-s Wish, an old Hallmark kids Christmas movie. She also came with the name Anna so it was perfect. I love her. I saved her from being a meat cow. She's sterile because she was a twin (according to the vet). She's amazing and a survivor. I bottle fed her for 4+ months, every day, so now she thinks I'm her mama. We cuddled yesterday. Cows are literally just big dogs that eat hay. Annabelle likes to sniff and lick the chickens and ducks when I hold them and bring them over to visit her.
You would expect that type of display of love from a dog or cat but is is amazing to see from a large cow. You show that such animals can truly display love & affection.

Yeah, he knows me. I think you'd be hard pressed to get him to lay there while you brushed him without me being around. He lets almost anyone brush him...as long as I'm there...and actually, most cattle learn to recognize the ones out there with them all the time.

We pass a ranch going home from Elliot Lake, that has a herd of Highland Cattle...and my husband always mentions and wonders how they let them alone without watching them...with bears and such in the neighbourhood....I do mention everytime, that they are Highland and not much messes with a Highland Bull, one look at those horns and just the thought of what he can do with them, scares most off.
My neighbor down the road had all kinds of exotic animals on his ranch.. The angora cows ( Scottish highlanders) Where always my fav.. But the bison was a close second..

Sometimes I will be just sitting in my chair and one of my cats will just jump in my lap and head butt my chin. I always consider it such a compliment when they seek my companionship.
