    Hi Andrew, got this video recommended in my youtube feed and felt compelled to write a comment. I'm 25, graduated from an Italian uni this april and spent a lot of time looking for a decent job. I sent around 90 CVs, most of them personalized for the position and with a complementary cover letter, the response rate was around 18% and the acceptance to the second step of the interview process was even lower. I get what you are saying about the "spray and pray" tactic but I don't think most young people have the CV to just apply to highly suited positions, given that employers have ridiculously high entry-level requirements that most of the time don't even match the actual work you'll end up doing. Personalized CVs and a high volume of candidatures are necessary to increase your luck that a human being will actually read your CV nowadays. After months of job hunt I still didn't end up in my dream position, or even an ideal one, but I had to compromise and accept a salary I can at least survive with. On a different note, when you talk about networking do you have any practical advice? How do you even start to build a network of connections when most of my time is spend either commuting to work or working?
    Anyway good video, I'll check out your channel, sorry if my comment sounds jaded or lacks hope but sometimes it's nice to vent out

      @@piovale have you tried to look for a job in different cities / countries? The bigger your universe the bigger the chances.
      Regarding networking my recommendation is to always think about people when you have an issue or an opportunity: “who could give me a good advice / who I could I support with my expertise”, then human relations grow slowly in time.

      @Andrew_Extra Yep, I sent CVs all over Italy and around 10% in Europe but got rejected/never heard back from most of them (probably because the only languages I speak are English and Italian). Anyway thank you for your reply, I'll try to follow your suggestions from now on 🙂

    thanks for sharing your experience andrew! im 22 years old and I'll soon get my bachelor in history and unfortunately in my country (Italy) it looks like there aren't many options for jobs with this kind of degree, even with a 5 year degree (magistrale) that i plan to get right after my bachelor degree. I'm really inexperienced in the job market, I'll treasure your tips for sure. i hope to make it one day studying and working in my favourite field of knowledge, but at the same time i fear life will impose me to work in totally unrelated fields just to have a decent salary. That or leave my country, which i would do with a heavy heart....

      Pietro, sadly I've to congratulate you for being such brave to take this sort of path in your life; I hope you'll find a way to valorise your skills and maybe a day contribute in improving this kind of studies, and make them a more suitable course for the moltitude of people who cannot take this risk even with a deep passion...

    Thank you for the insight. In your opinion, are companies looking for specialists or generalists? Is it better to be somewhat competent on many different things, or an expert in 1-2 skills?

    • @Andrew_Extra
      @Andrew_Extra  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stefanopalliggiano6596 you always need both, at least in overhead functions, but generalists are usually taking care of simple administrative tasks while specialists have more potential to earn more with their seniority increase.

    Ho anche io 39 anni. 2 lauree, 1 PhD, accademia, industria, le ho girate tutte, alti e bassi. Sono ancora qui a elemosinare uno stipendio in Germania, proprio come te. Sono molto selettivo e continuo a creare CV specifici per le posizioni a cui applico. Spero che la persona di riferimento all'Arbeitsagentur sia comprensiva quando dovrò discutere questo approccio alla ricerca di un'occupazione.

    I have an MA and years of experience in the industry. If I were to apply only to jobs I perfectly qualify for... I would apply to zero jobs (I literally don't meet the minimum qualifications for the jobs I already had in the past!!!! Same company, same seniority level, not even the entry level ones). So I'm just gonna skip that advice and apply to jobs I know I can perform.

    Ciao andrea, io vorrei iniziare la mia carriera come planner engineer nell’ Oil&Gas appena dopo la laurea triennale in ingegneria gestionale. Sono al primo anno e grazie al networking ho ottenuto già un tirocinio in una multinazionale che fa Oil&Gas quindi data la mia esperienza effettivamente il network fa il 90% del lavoro nella ricerca di una nuova posizione ❤

      E quando inizierai, sii curioso e cerca di imparare il più possibile e di conoscere le persone all’interno di quella azienda. Diventerà nel tempo la tua base per il futuro network.

    Dopo una laurea magistrale umanistica, ho dovuto mandare più di 200 candidature per farmi assumere da una nota banca digitale per un lavoro che è poco più che un call center (per iscritto)...la vera menzogna comunque riguarda la mobilità verticale più che quella orizzontale, secondo me. Ne ho già sentite da diverse persone di storie di vita, da chi passa per la logistica e poi finisce nel settore bancario, chi inizia in legge e poi va a fare il commerciale. Comunque resta sempre il fatto che, per mansione o per salario, si rimane eternamente dei junior

      @@Rolfwar posso chiederti che tipo di lavoro volevi ottenere con una laurea umanistica? Nell’industria privata i dipartimenti classici di approdo sono HR, Communication/Marketing Ed altre overhead function non sempre chiave, e li devi competere con candidati con studi legali, di business o amministrazione, che generalmente vengono preferiti.
      La mia domanda non è una critica, ma voglio capire la tua aspirazione.
