Right now, because of Real Madrid’s champions league win and how he was the player of the tournament many people think that it’s Vinicius Junior’s Ballon Dor to lose. It does make sense as he has an advantage over other players right now because winning the champions league it’s seen as the most prestigious trophy in club football and he did it as the best player in the competition and in the knockouts in these big games from the RD of 16 to the final itself, he got a G/A in every game, but people need to realize that there’s no clear frontrunner for the Ballon Dor until the EUROs and Copa América have been played. Things can change so easily and a big reason for that is the impact of recency bias with people focusing more on recent events than the full picture. Majority of these players are on the same level and the major tournaments in the summer will decide the winner of this award meaning that Vini’s Ballon Dor isn’t secure just yet.
Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane Jude Bellingham Phil Foden and even Toni Kroos are all massive contenders for this award and you can even through Rodri back in the conversation if Spain does well at the EUROs. Mbappe is likely to score the most goals out of any player in the tournament and what if France wins the EUROs and he plays very well. He scored 40+ goals in all competitions had the most goals out of any player in Europe and was the joint top scorer in the champions league. In any other year, Kane is a genuine contender for the Ballon Dor because he scored 40+ goals won the European Golden Shoe, was the top scorer both in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, his lack of trophies at Bayern Munich hurts his chances big time and even if England does well at the EUROs and they win it all, guess what he plays on the same team as Bellingham who won a lot of trophies at Real Madrid last season and the advantage that he has over him and Foden is the fact that he won the Champions League. Even if Brazil wins the Copa América, Bellingham will win the Ballon Dor over Vini if he wins the EUROs with England because the EUROs is far more prestigious than the Copa América and besides we all know how his PR works the media won’t glazing about him. Because Toni Kroos is retiring it makes sense that people are pushing a narrative for him to win the Ballon Dor if Germany has a good EUROs. In recent years, the Ballon Dor has become open and I feel like nowadays a player can be seen as the best player in the world simply because they were part of a successful team that won a lot even though they weren’t even the best player on their club or national team. When Messi and Ronaldo were at the peak of their powers, the stats they put up and individual brilliance was separated by the amount of trophies they won simply because individually they were so good and between the 2, with the goals they were scoring, team accolades were the only way to separate them. There are many factors in these individual awards such as a player’s stats goals and assists, performances throughout the season team trophies impact on team success either at club or international level and performances in big matches for club and country. You don’t know who’s realistically winning the Ballon Dor as nothing has been decided until the major tournaments have been played and in a span of a month, you’ll go from Vini to either Bellingham Mbappe or Kroos depending on how England France and Germany do at the EUROs.
The person who made the comment about how they always "support" ronaldo and belittle messi must have never watched this channel consistently in their lifetime lool. Have you seen some of the slander ronaldo gets while messi gets praised for it? Messi played like garbage this entire season in the MLS of all leagues but somehow made the top 10 list of fowards in the world? Vinicius Junior isn’t guaranteed the Ballon Dor despite winning the champions league with Real Madrid as the best player in the competition. He had a great season and was the most important player in a Real Madrid team that won yet another champions league title and while they weren’t at their brilliant best at times, he got them over the line when it counted and he has an advantage over others simply because of the champions league and the impact you have on your team and individual performances in big games is an important factor in determining the Ballon Dor not just how many trophies your team wins in a season you have to contribute in important matches whether it’s in the league or UCL. One of the things that might cost Vini the Ballon Dor or how he can secure this award is what happens at the Copa América this summer.
Realistically speaking, this is the weakest Brazil team we’ve ever seen and it doesn’t look as strong as they were before. They seem to have moved on from aging players who have passed their best, they have a relatively young and inexperienced team and they look very weak their midfield defense and their attack at best is ok. No one is really expecting them to win the Copa América, but if he has a good tournament scores 5 goals gets an assist or 2, they win it get to either the final or semifinal, he’ll be the Ballon Dor winner regardless of what happens at the EUROs. History goes against Vini because the version of him that we see at Real Madrid week in week out hasn’t been anywhere close to that level in a Brazil shirt as he has just 3 goals for his country and for a world class player that’s very poor. If he has a poor Copa América the narrative around him can change in a span of a month as he can go from a guy who’s seen as the best player in the world to an overrated player systems merchant who can’t perform outside of Madrid and that football has fell off if he wins the Ballon Dor this year, I know how you all are. International football has also been a major factor in deciding who should win the Ballon Dor because success at club level isn’t enough as people also look at the success that a player has for their country. Nowadays, there’s a product of recency bias that plays into all of this as voters focus on what’s happening recently rather than for the full season for club and country meaning that Vini did in the champions league for Real Madrid can easily be forgotten about. There is no clear frontrunner for the Ballon Dor right now even if Vini has a 40% chance of winning it because major tournaments are very important and we live in a world where people everything is impacted off of recency bias.
