      because it's not for us - it's for her. It's her escape from the world around us, even though blue and the cook and the clients all think it's a show just for them. It's what madame Gorsky is trying to do for the girls - Blue controls her and he sells the girls to the clients and makes them dance to get them in a spending mood and the girls don't even get to choose their clients or turn one away if they don't like them, so Gorsky tries to help them reclaim ownership of their own bodies and sexuality by teaching themselves how to express themselves or find some sort of power through their dance (just like how in the real world Dr Gorsky is trying to help her patients by getting them to act out what happened to but Blue treats it all like a show for him and the other orderlies and uses the girls as a means of 'running the place'). Babydoll's able to take it on fully and be free of her surroundings completely where she dances because it helps her go somewhere else in her mind"

      +Sci_Ant there's substance to Game of Thrones, and I don't know if you'd even call it sexualising in that show - it's just realistic, where as all I get out of this scene and probably the whole movie (I don't remember it - what a surprise) is lots of attractive women in scantily clad outfits - so much so that if there is any story or plot it completely clouds over it... fair enough if you don't think it's fair judgment on this movie, but Game of Thrones? There seem to be a lot of crack pot theories about what this film means, so I'll just add my own to the bunch.
    In the true reality, (The Asylum) after the lobotomy, Dr. Gorski says that Baby Doll helped another patient escape (Sweet Pea). Clearly then, we can determine that the other girls in the group (Sweet Pea, Blondie, Rocket & Amber) DO exist, and are not figments of Baby Doll's imagination. In my opinion, the reason Baby Doll re-imagines the asylum as a bordello is because it is easier to cope with the idea that it's your body being taken by force, rather than your mind.

    Seeing this scene, I'm really surprised they cut it. It gives a good illustration the actual happenings of the club and what Babydoll had to do before her plots. It would have given it a nice flow if this was the only non-backstage scene they showed since most of the rest of the movie took place outside of the clubs open hours. It gives us an illustration on what the girls had been put through with having to put themselves out there and make to look risque and why they wanted to escape.

  • @violetgirl1996
    @violetgirl1996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +177

    I'm glad they took out this scene, as glamorous as it is, it would have changed the film's focal points of illusion of man's power into a comedic factor, rather than to juxtapose a serious symbolic freedom for women. Even thinking they did it on purpose, is filmed just for the deleted scenes.

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I think that's the point. This dance is the image they're selling to the public. We see what they're selling and how they're presenting it, but then we see the reality - the beds they sleep in rather than the beds they work in, and the shooting scene in the dressing room. We think the Madam is in on it because she's teaching the girls how to dance but actually she's helping them regain some form of the control over their bodies that Blue and the clients have taken from them by teaching them to express themselves through dance, making it about them rather than about the men visiting the club, her way of protecting them and helping them get through each day.

    I think this scene is supposed to show what they're selling - meaning the cover of a sexy glamorous club where the girls are in charge of their sexuality and it's always exciting and you'd want to be a part of it. But then we're shown behind the scenes, the beds where the girls actually sleep instead of the rooms they take their clients too. And then the shooting scene in the dressing room to show us that all this dance is an image, it's not the reality of the club. Blue is using and selling their bodies, the madam/dance instructress is trying to help them regain some control in their lives and over their bodies by teaching them to express themselves through dance and to help them get through the nightmare they're all trapped in (herself included) one day at a time (like when she told Babydoll that they "don't keep things that have no purpose" and at first it sounds like a threat but in fact she's warning her because she's trying to protect her like she does all the girls).

      It was cut for time and rating purposes. You probably watched the director's cut version which had a lot more dance scenes. I honestly would've taken more of these over Baby Doll's "dances." It adds a totally different feel to the movie. Makes it very Moulin Rouge-esque.

      Sadly a lot of people nowadays are unable to understand allegory, and need Basil Exposition to pop up every five minutes. The biggest clue is right at the beginning - as the titles are rolling, you can see the stage footlights briefly. That tells you that the whole part from the very beginning to the super close up of the eye is actually a "play within a play", which in turn is all happening in the mind of an unknown character (presumably a woman who is in a real mental institution, probably suffering due to abuse as a child). All of the girls are aspects of her character, but in order to move on with her treatment (e.g. getting on the bus at the end) every part of her character except one has to die.

    Most people who cry about this movie being 'anti-women' are just mad because all those girls look good in those outfits and can kick ass while they sit around bitching because they are average....all of those actresses did their own scenes. "No girl fantasizes herself being a kickass warrior in sweat pants" I'm like "That is so true" Hell I thought Sailor Moon was a badass all my life and her fuku is very similar to Baby Doll's. I have to give this a rewatch because I don't think I paid much attention the first time I saw it. I don't remember feeling oppressed by it. I was more like "HELL YEAH" when it came out.

    In "Sucker Punch," the dance scenes are performed by the main characters in a stylized, surreal environment. They symbolize the characters' attempts to escape their harsh realities and showcase their inner strength and resilience. These moments often blend with the action sequences, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality.

    THIS....... was not used in the movie? What the hell! This is utterly amazing. I can't imagine the time and effort it took to plan, practice, choreograph, perform, and shoot this amazing scene. I suppose it was cut due to time constraints, but it is so good it should have been used. Let's remember, the Lord of the Rings movies were very long so time constraints should not have been a big deal.

  • @agenttheater5
    @agenttheater5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I know people say this scene doesn't make sense for the rest of the movie and I get what they mean when they say it glamourises the brothel and and covers up the fact that none of the girls working there actually want to work there.
    But I think that's the idea. in this scene, we're seeing what they're selling to the customers/clients, we're seeing the image they're giving out, something sexy and glamorous and that the girls want to work there because they want to sleep with those guys. And then, both straight afterwards when we hear and see Babydoll crying and later in the movie ie in the scene after Amber steals the lighter and the scene in the dressing room when Amber and Blondie get killed, we see the reality of the club, the fact that they're stuck there being forced to perform and don't even get to choose their clients or keep any of the money. Like how here we see the bedrooms the clients are taken to and how they are opulent and full of pillows, painting, various other items and even special effects with he turning bed and then we see the beds the girls sleep in when it's lights out and they finally get to go to bed before they're woken up and have to work in the kitchen or cleaning duty and then have to go to rehearsals and how they're not in costume or elegant/sexy lingerie and how the beds are all identical with nothing personal about them more like prison or army beds than anything. We see the illusion they're selling and the impression that they want to be there and that we should want to be there too then we see the reality and see why they want to run away even though they can't because they'll get killed.
    But I also think that it's also got a lot to do with Madame Gorsky and how she said "I teach them to survive you" to Blue and how at first when she told Babydoll "If you do not dance then you have no purpose and we don't keep things that have no purpose" it sounded like a threat but then you realise she was warning her, because rather than running the place with Blue she's trapped there/is owned by Blue same as the girls, and she's actually trying to help them get through this one day at a time. I think that with their dances, as well as keeping them 'useful' so that they'll bring clients and money in so they won't be killed or locked up by Blue, Gorsky is also trying to help them cope with their lives by encouraging the girls to use their dances as a form of self-expression, turning it into art and something personal as well as something to turn the clients on, a proper performance with a set and a costume and even a hint at a storyline ie hospital, saint, hotel, Bollywood dance scene, so that during their rehearsals and during those few minutes of their performance, the girls have reclaimed their bodies and movement and their control over both, even if it's taken away from them later by Blue and his clients, just to make their lives bearable, because in those moments they're dancing for themselves and not for the men.
    Let's not forget, in reality Dr Gorsky is doing this as a form of therapy, getting the girls to act out what happened to them, it's there to help them confront and communicate what is too difficult for them to talk about and what's happening to them, but Blue and the other orderlies are turning it into something for them to watch and are taking away their chances to get better by abusing and controlling the girls saying "I look after them, these are my girls" robbing them of their individuality.
