I always just seen the controversy around Speedy as a perfect example of westerners playing the hero and victimising other races. Speedy was actually taken off the air from 99 to 2003 because of complaints that he was a racial stereotype. Ironically he was put back on the air when Mexican fans kept asking for Speedy to be put back on the air.

At this point I fear that a western will criticize someone from the very race/religion they tried to defend by claiming that they're harming their own culture for tolerating a stereotype.....
Meh, I might be exaggerating a bit.

if you actually watched the cartoon you would know that's not true. there are many times we're the cat is chasing pepe and the times he's chasing her the excuse why she doesn't want to be near him is his smell. one time in the cartoon he gets a bath in a perfume and she was about to run away but then realized he doesnt stink instead she basically all over him with fucking heart eyes. the stereotype in his case is women do not like men who smell like shit even if they are attracted to you.

I have never thought of Speedy as a racist cartoon stereotype. It's a comedic CARTOON for Christ's sake. If the intention of it's creator was to create a racist stereotype he/she failed badly. Speedy is simply a very funny loveable character period. The reason is that Mexicans know how to laugh at themselves better than anyone else. I decided to watch this thinking that maybe I am wrong. NOPE. This doesn't mean there aren't any racist cartoons. There certainly are but they are blatantly obvious. Certain television programs of the 1950's especially were racist; some intentionally so but not all. As a grade school boy I used to run home after school to watch the Amos and Andy show. It had some very racist stereotypes but the characters were funny, loveable and smart so it was a lot like Speedy for me. We should also consider The Andy Griffith Show with its many stereotypical types that everyone loved.
One of the most loveable actors in Mexico, Cantinflas, was revered throughout Latin America and Spain in the 1930's through 1960's plus. He was the human equivalent of Speedy Gonzalez. Watch any of his films and you will quickly see his charm and witticisms as well as his acting skills. There was also a popular boxer who went by the name of El Raton Macias because of his diminutive stature.
Everybody who is offended by this needs to lighten up. God Bless!

The idea that racial stereotypes wouldn't translate easily (or at all) is both really obvious and yet is also the kind of thing that would be difficult to put together without having access to the same media in multiple languages. On the note of the Mexican villages in Speedy Gonzalez cartoons. Actually, they're the reason I absolutely always disliked Speedy's cartoons. Not because I found them racist or a misrepresentation. I'm not Mexican and the poor miserable towns in my country don't look like that, there's more jungle and less desert (read: none at all) in El Salvador. But I always hated those towns because of how boring they looked, specially compared to the backdrops of the Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons. I would usually get bored midway through a Speedy cartoon and switch to a different channel until Bugs was back. Though to be fair, I also remember finding characters like Pepé le Pew boring as well.

To be fair when Americans think of Mexico, we think of the region where the border between Mexico and the States runs, the Dry, windblown, sparsely populated regions where at one point I don't doubt it looked like that. We don't think of the wetter and more populated regions to the south. Let alone the Jungles of Central America. Most folks' exposure to Hispanic culture was what could be seen by looking over the fence, so to speak and the dry desert regions are all you can see at that distance.

Also, the mannerisms of the voice didn't seem racist either

0:31 I think they should instead of removing him, just change his personality. Hes French Yes, and that dosent mean that if hes romantic, hes a stereotype. I think they should just change his personality, and Maybe change that he stinks all the time, to just make him stink when he has very strong emotions. I want him back, but Maybe a little less stinkier all the time, and not too clingy. But like, just because he talks with a French additude, or are French, dosent mean its a stereotypic to be romantic in that case. Everyone can be romantic. The reason they removed him, was because someone said he Inspired rape culture. They could of just change his personality.

When you say you find a problem with the background? Then show a 40 year newer clip and compare it. When they made those older they were hand drawn and things were done by committee because of the number of artists that were involved in the drawing of parts and how the background had to remain a simple to replicate imagery that they could draw even into character cells to show movement, that was as good as you could do it due to the amount of work/thought had to go into making each frame of the movie by hand and to make it up. They had characters action frames and still frames then did the transition frames and cells as needed. some to having cells of background for character actions where there was not movement into he characters into a solid frame that the characters moved but the background what drawn to maintain the same linear alignment showing no movement even as the character was bouncing around on the cell while the lines had to be perfectly aligned on the many cells that formed the moving image. I think it was a matter of it being easier to draw the simpler it was and the "dirty hides the imperfections hand drawing left' To compare it to anything electronically generated is an almost an unforgiveable sin. The only modern day comparison is clay animation from the picture frame by frame hands on art type handling. In as far it's being a degradation for a person being compared to the images on the comic, no I thought of the people that this was some how giving me a look at something that was far different from how i was growing and it somehow settled a bit of the thirst inside me that wondered how things a long way from here was. I took no opinion of how a group of people from there, cause the only grouping I understood was family, and being from a small town community, everybody was in our tree cause we all are family that come from people that came here long ago., they are all family. This made me yearn to find out more about different people, because these depictions were so interesting, I had not learned to judge folk as people yet remember I couldn't judge family, or needed not to, so I didn't have that concept, mine was more concerned if I was good enough. I am 57 now, and I still feel happy and dhout andele andele ep fa arriva arriva. because..... it just makes me smile

If was judging the people who the show, then yes, I would be wrong, but I was judging the show itself as a work of art, because art can speak for itself, regardless of the intentions of the artist
