Petersburg VA 05.21.11: Q400, The Auto Train, And A Gigantic Dumbbell-Looking Thingy

  • After Q401 took care of business and got on its way again, it was time for its opposite number to take its turn in the yard. While Q400's crew took great care in conducting their pickup down to the last inch, the detector at milepost 17.4 announced the imminent arrival of the southbound Auto Train. A few minutes later and out it blasted from beneath the Halifax Road overpass, led by P40 818 and P42 78. The AT is always a welcome sight, but my attention was also drawn to the AC6000 leading Q400, as well as the stainless-steel glint that appeared to be coming from somewhere behind the lashup.
    Finally, a few moments after the Auto Train had passed Q400 was reassembled and ready for departure. AC6000CW 622 led the way, followed by C40-8W 7830, SD70MAC 4733, SD40-2 8030 - and one car back from the head end, DODX 39472, a 12-axle flat loaded with a cask for transporting spent nuclear fuel rods. It was undoubtedly a tough act to follow, even for the faded 'C&O For Progress' 2-bay hopper that appeared later (at 5:38), so I folded for the evening and headed home.

    That dumbbell container is a M-290 shipping container, It is empty if it is in general freight and because there are not any placards on the container it is new.

  • @macsdaddy3383
    @macsdaddy3383 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The vessel container is on a marked DODX railcar meaning that the car and the containment vessel probably belong to the U.S. Dept. of Defense, most likely for shipping nuclear material of some kind. Most than likely, it was an empty vessel being moved to somewhere else as it was being pulled with other general freight cars and there was no (DODX) caboose on the end this consist.

      @FastFlyingVirginian  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. I've seen a few of the flats since then, both with and without the vessel (and one loaded one via streaming webcam), but the one in this clip remains my southernmost sighting.

    I came upon the car without the flask and had no idea what it was until I spoke with my friend and he looked the number up to let me know what it was used for. Then he found your video and sent it to me. I know know more about this car and what it carries and while watching your vid I can see what it looks like loaded. Thanks for sharing your great video :-))

    • @carolinarailfanning
      @carolinarailfanning 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get out of here... that is not funny at all, and radioactive material does not glow as much as you think

    • @klixtrio7760
      @klixtrio7760 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      radioactive fuel pellets do glow but not from radiation its from heat. You can watch old videos of them replacing fuel pellets by hand and they come out white hot.

  • @lucianene7741
    @lucianene7741 ปีที่แล้ว

    That nuclear waste flask is too obvious, they should disguise it in some way, maybe make it look like a regular tank car.

    • @FastFlyingVirginian
      @FastFlyingVirginian  ปีที่แล้ว

      They only travel like this when they are unloaded. Loaded ones travel in a dedicated move and are pretty well guarded/monitored.
