  • In this video, I do an update on my Colocasia esculenta 'Pink China' as well as a few of my other Colocasias. There might even be a flower forming on the Pink China.
This is the second year I have been growing Colocasia Pink China plants in my garden. It is meant to be the most cold-hardy Colocasia esculenta that you can grow and it did survive the very cold weather we got here last winter. With a little bit of mulch, it can be easily overwintered in the ground in most locations in the UK and similar climates.

Very pretty looking foliage plants. I had some Alocasias but i thought all of them had expired last winter in the extreme cold but recently a small leaf has popped up in a wheelbarrow i throw waste soil into so i guess I'd better try and save it lol.

Thanks, Brett. Yeah, I am very happy with how it's done this year. It was very slow to get going after the main plants rotted away after winter. But I think the wetter summer has actually helped the pups get growing, Colocasias actually really like wet environments. Yeah, you should definitely pot up your alocasias, they can make nice houseplants.

Thanks! Yeah, most of the ones I grow are ornamental varieties, only the 'Pink China' is meant to be hardy enough to survive in the ground out of the ones I grow.

We use the leaves and roots (corms) in Indian cooking. You have to be careful to remove the thick veins with a sharp knife otherwise you will get plant bits stuck in your throat (needle-shaped raphides in the plant cells); the same is true of the corms - we usually boil until cooked and then curry them.

Thanks for watching. Yeah, I know colocasias can be used when cooked, although I’ve never tried cooking it myself. I had some cooked when I was on holiday. I’ll have to look into how to prepare them and have a go at it someday 👍

Thanks! I'm going to keep an eye on it as it starts to open, although we are expecting some cold temperatures here in a few days, just hoping that doesn't damage it 🤞

Looking lovely! Mine didn’t come back till really late after last winter but they are catching up now. Looks like we are due a 0 next week (Cheshire) so maybe thats gonna stop them. Defo looks like an inflorescence forming to me. There’s a German video on TH-cam that shows them coming through very yellow like yours.

Thanks! Yeah, mine took quite a while to get going this year too. I think the wet summer has helped it do quite well. Yeah, I had a look at a few photos and videos and yeah it does look like an inflorescence 👍
Yeah, I've been keeping a close eye on the weather and at the moment It's showing some lows of 2°C at the moment, but it could easily get colder than that in my location. Just hoping we don't get a frost just yet 🤞
